• A. Born July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk.
• B. Died March 28, 1985 in Saint Paul, France.
• C. He was Male.
• He was Russian and French and believed in Judaism.
Key Personal Events
• A. Jews were not allowed in Russian art schools but his mother knew he enjoyed it so much that she bribed the headmaster to let him in. Moved to Russia in 1906 to find the country’s artistic side. He found his role model, Paul Gauguin, there. When he moved to Paris in 1910 he was able to study the works of famous artists like Van Gogh, Matisse, Manet, Monet, and Gauguin. He moved back to Russia to marry his love, Bella Rosenfeld and he became one of Russia’s most famous artists. He moved back to France in 1922 to keep working on arty until German occupation in 1941 when he moved to America. In America he felt guilty for leaving his fellow Jews and he moved back to France in 1948 where he died in 1985.
Key Historical Events
As a kid he was not allowed in most schools because he was Jewish. When he moved out to Paris he was able to study great paintings of surrealism which became his style. After moving to Russia famine struck and he was forced to move back to France. When the Nazi’s took power they attempted to destroy modern art because it challenged the government. Chagall was threatened as an artist and was forced to move to the US.
Stylistic Traits
• A. Chagall only used about two or three colors in an image because he felt that was all he needed to capture an image.
• B. Painted acrobats and circuses because he loved them and was amazed by them.
• C. He often included Jewish elements because he was Jewish and he valued his religion.
• D. Often created stained glass like in his UN stained glass windows.
