From The ChurchServices for October - St Andrews ChurchSunday 21st - 10:00am Harvest Communion

e enjoyed a ‘late summer break’ and were blessed with some fantastic warm sunshine in theW

day time and a contrasting chilliness in the evenings that justified lighting the fire and layering on a cosy jumper and slippers.

A delightful crisp top note in the morning air reminded us that the fine weather was not to be wasted. Now we’re home and everyone is ‘back to school’ and ‘back at work’ there’s a sense of urgency in people’s greetings “The evenings are getting darker but it’s a lovely day. We’d better make the most of it!” So we enjoy the vivid colours and geometric shapes of dahlias, pick blackberries, collect apples and try to be outside whenever we can. I’ve been wondering whether we appreciate late sunshine because we know it will be short lived. (I guess it’s the way of the world to value things that are rare, rather than common place.) But if that’s the case there’s a very real danger that over time we will find less joy, and less wonder, in the everyday blessings we receive because they are just that, ‘everyday’. How sad it would

be if our society became so numbed by the goodness of our lives that we forgot how wonderful it is to run a glassful of clear sparkling water, or to sip a cup of coffee, or to smell freshly laundered clothes! In the battle against complacency, Harvest Festivals can be a safeguard for us. They provide us with an opportunity to celebrate the blessings of food, water and growth. They help us to remember that these things are gifts to treasure, not to be taken for granted. As the children will sing

“So I mustn’t forgetNo, I mustn’t forget

To say a great big thank youI mustn’t forget.”

Kirsty Kelly with her lucky number 72. They both win £37.

I would like many more people to join so that OUR Village Hall continues. If you do nothing else in the Village please support this. he autumn term is always busy and full of exciting things; there is so much to learn about harvest timeT

and the onset of autumn in our beautiful rural surroundings.

We have welcomed several new children who are settling in well; Rosie, Bebe, Luella, Erin, Jacob, Eleanor, Harry, Holly and Cecily.

We entered a fantastic display of children’s work in the Education Tent at the Berkshire Show and were delighted to have won First Prize from more than 50 pre-school and primary entries. The competition is entitled “Outside the Classroom” and showcases the work the children do outside. The judges were apparently impressed that we learn outside every day (whatever the weather) and go into the countryside, not just a playground.

We have also spent a wonderful morning with the Action for the River Kennet (ARK) environmentalists. We paddled in the River Lambourn and the children found shrimp, bullheads, a caseless caddis and a tiny brook lamprey. All these creatures are dependent on a healthy river with lots of flowing water. The children now have their Thames Water 4 minute shower timers to use and their ARK Water Matters passport to fill in, helping them learn more about their chalk stream and the many ways they and their families can all use less water If you have a pre-school child and would like to see the opportunities and care we offer, please do call in to visit us or look at our website, www.greatsheffordunderfives, for further details and contacts.

ur Monday “turn-up” session offers parents and carers, with very young children, an opportunity toO

meet and make new friends. We provide activities and toys for babies, toddlers and pre-school children as well as refreshments for all.

The group is organized by two Under Fives staff, Morven and Angela, who offer a warm welcome and make sure new visitors feel included.

The session costs £3 per family.

Over £2,100 raised in Amazing Harvest Auction

Pickled Onions! There was even a mannequin up for grabs, though its specialist appeal probably required a particular type of bidder!

Troy Jordan and Letitia Slade worked tirelessly throughout the evening, showcasing the auction lots around the pub for everyone to see before placing their bids. Sue Ridgeway injected extra organisation into the evening by handing out bidder cards to people as they arrived, and looking after takings!

It was good to see Chris Jordan in attendance having had to take a back seat this year, and in a letter received by Chaddleworth News he recorded his approval of the whole event – Thanks Chris!

After everything had been added up, the grand total raised was a massive £2,122. Of that, £1,567 came from the auction, £282 from donations, and £273 from the raffle. The Seniors are certainly set for a fine Christmas Lunch this year…

Downland Gardening Club

This was given by John Baker who together with his wife June Colley owns the “Hanging Hostas Garden” in Bordon, Hampshire.

As well as their amazing collection of Hostas they have added a large collection of different types of lilies to their garden which they grow in pots. With beautiful illustrations John led us through the various types of lilies, giving general advice on cultivation. He stressed the need for feeding the plants to achieve good blooms, and gave advice on how to deal with lily beetle. Vigilance and your hand held cupped underneath the red beetle when removing it from the lily leaf was his tip, as it will turn on its back when it lands and then be invisable.

Next month on Saturday October 13th we are joining with Chieveley Gardening Society for a coach outing to Batsford Arboretum, near Moreton in the Marsh. The coach will leave from Chieveley Village Hall at 9.00am. There are still a few places on the coach, please contact Lea Naples, 01488 638488 if you are interested. The cost is £20 inclusive of entrance to the Arboretum.

cake and a real social occasion at the Village Hall. The aim was to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of their World's Biggest Coffee Morning Campaign.

n Friday 28th September, which was a glorious Autumn afternoon, about 50 of us enjoyed tea andO

We had home made cakes and lots of gift items for sale and of course a grand raffle. Villagers have been very generous and supportive in making cakes, giving raffle prizes, making donations and coming along to join together to have an enjoyable afternoon. We raised an amazing £356, so together with the £105 raised earlier in the year by John and Phyllis Bibbings at their garden party, the grand total of money raised for Macmillan is £461. I think this is a great achievement for a small Village like ours and I know will be much appreciated by Macmillan.

As you know this event was organised by the Afternoon Club. We miss this Club and would like to re-invent it perhaps in a slightly different form and certainly involving more people in the organisation of events. If you would be interested in being involved or have any ideas on the kind of events people would like to attend please would you contact Christine Patterson or myself. An informal meeting will then be arranged to discuss where we go from here.

Lament to the Shop

to why so many people in the village don't seem to want to join in to make things happen. I found that ordering my bread and papers made me walk 3/4 times a week and enjoy a chat when I got to the shop. I managed to find something else that I had forgotten (eg washing up liquid) or just something else I fancied.

Stuart is very kindly carrying on with the papers but this was supposed to be an integral part of the village. I wonder how long it will take to hear moans now that this great service is lost for ever. It is a very sad day indeed.
