PRESIDENT’S UPDATE Dr. Henry D. Shannon A Message from Superintendent/ President Shannon The closing of a semester often brings a sense of pride for the many accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff. Working in education for more than 40 years, I can tell you firsthand, that what we do is the most important work out there, and it offers the most rewards. Our recent commencement ceremony is a perfect example. Not only did we have the largest graduating class in Chaffey College history, which is a tremendous feat in itself, we held it at a new venue with a new look and feel. Seeing the faces of our graduates as they walked on that stage at Citizens Business Bank Arena, was truly priceless. When I shook their hands and offered them their degrees or certificates, I kept thinking how in each one, there was a story. And whether their academic journey was smooth or filled with obstacles, Chaffey College offered all of them the same beautiful opportunity to commence to wherever they were aimed to go, with the same starting point. Each of our graduates has been given the tools needed to either enter the workforce better prepared, compete for that next job level or to transfer to the four-year university of their dreams. As superintendent/president, I could not be prouder of the Class of 2017 graduates, and how the college celebrated them. This year, we also welcomed PepsiCo Executive Vice President and acclaimed author, Richard Montañez, as our keynote speaker. He encouraged our graduates to “stand out” and to also give back. Raised locally and working at the Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga when he had the idea to spice up Cheetos, Mr. Montañez was the perfect example to our graduates of the importance of living out their dreams and believing in themselves. Indeed, it is an exciting time to be at Chaffey College. Congratulations, Class of 2017! Sincerely, Henry D. InTech Programs Offered toLocal High School Students A recent grant from JP Morgan Chase & Co. has allowed the InTech Center todevelop a manufacturing/workforce development program for local high schoolstudents. The program will focus on fundamentals in the industrial electrical ormechanical industries, and students who complete all requirements will receivejob assistance and related industry certifications.

“With a widening skills gap occurring between companies in the Inland Empire and qualified workers, exposing students to the opportunities available to them is vital to the economy,” said Jennifer Poe,Lead Data and Project Manager at the InTech Center. “By providing the tools to begin a career in awell-paid, high-demand industry, this grant helps young individuals find a pathway to their future.”

The program is expected to serve 90-120 students over a one-year period. Upon completion of theirtraining, students will be prepared to find an entry-level position in a related industry or can advanceto a higher level of training.

“Chaffey College’s InTech Center is a tremendous asset to our region, providing vital access to skilledinstruction and job placement to meet industry demands,” said Mathew Holton, Superintendent ofChaffey Joint Union High School District.

Students Create PublicMural at Montclair Place This semester, three Chaffey College art students, under the directionof Professor Chris Trueman, spent six days creating public art at theMontclair Place, formerly Montclair Plaza. The 145-foot mural featuresthe mountain range north of the mall depicted in a young, urbanmanner. The large-scale work was completed in acrylic spray paint andpaint marker on the concrete wall.

The artwork, designed by Professor Trueman, is his largest project todate and is based off a smaller-scale project from his Chaffey Collegedrawing class. Trueman enlisted the help of three of his former

students (Peyton Warrick, Jarmaine Pascua and Andrea Hernandez) tocomplete the installation. “The students got the experience of workingon a large-scale project,” said Trueman. “This type of hands-onexperience is a huge resume builder. Not many people get this type ofpractice; it takes their education out into the real world.”

Trueman and his student staff completed the mural in 33 hours, goingthrough 182 cans of spray paint. This is one of a series of indoor andoutdoor artworks commissioned by the mall to celebrate itsrebranding. The mural is located on the exterior triangular wall of themall’s parking deck ramp, north of Macy’s. To see the artists in actionplease visit https://vimeo.com/215774686/acd28ae1fc

Guided Pathways is a comprehensive initiative that challenges colleges to re-think how theyprovide services to students, from orientation to counseling to curriculum design. Collegesare being asked to “design backwards” from jobs that students want to obtain so that stu-dents are kept on track and have a better sense of the programs they are choosing. In addi-tion, curriculum is refocused on programs that lead to careers with sustainable wagesand/or growth opportunities.
