A. The King wanted to punish the colonists for the Tea Party

1. He passed the Coercive Acts aka the Intolerable Acts a. Closed the Port of Boston- until the tea was paid for b. Demanded that the soldiers be housed c. Trials will be held in Britain

B. Colonists were mad 1. Many colonists sent help to Mass. 2. Meeting was called to discuss what to do next.

II. 1st Continental Congress

A. First Continental congress meets 1. September 1774 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 2. All colonies were represented except Georgia a. They voted to ban trade until Intolerable acts were repealed. b. Called for each colony to begin training troops

• This is important because it marks the first time that the possibility to separate was real.

A. Spies worked on both sides Loyalists- colonists who stayed true to Britain Patriot- colonist who called for separation

VI. Lexington and ConcordA. April 19, Lexington 1. British met up with Colonist militia. British ordered them to drop their weapons. They didn’t. 2. Battle occurred. 8 American’s died.

VI. Lexington and Concord3. British marched on to Concord and destroyed the stockpile.

4. While the British were on their way out of town, 4,000 minutemen shot at the British troops. “Shot Heard Around the World”
