Architectural Survey File
This is the architectural survey file for this MIHP record. The survey file is organized reverse-
chronological (that is, with the latest material on top). It contains all MIHP inventory forms, National
Register nomination forms, determinations of eligibility (DOE) forms, and accompanying documentation
such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.
All material is property of the Maryland Historical Trust.

CH-23 Catslide Roof House (Burch House) Port Tobacco Private
early 18th century with 19th century alterations
The Burch House began as a one-story structure with a hall and parlor
floor plan and a single exterior chimney at each end. Early in the 19th century
the front slope of the roof was raised to provide for the full second-floor rooms.
At a slightly later date, the rear slope was extended to provide for two rear
additions. The long slope of this roof gives it the name catslide. The Burch
House is one of the earliest examples of an original two-room plan in Charles
County and is one of four surviving 18th century buildings in the former county
seat of Port Tobacco. It is now owned by the Society for the Restoration of Port
Tobacco, Inc.

This structure in its existing state measures approximately 28' 6" wide and 28 1
o" Jeep. It has remarkable and unique outside chimneys at each end, the west chimney having an arched opening at the bottom by which entry can be made from ht' ourside to the shallow cellar below the house. These chimneys, the mortl~e l.m~ tenon construction Hnd other tea lures rnLiJi..:rt.re rhtH rht!'Y:;~~r--rrxri1mxliTM"bcrl--;i: ·u1rn~"'uubaate<.a'UKUD. building started as a vne scory, two room, A- root house:
with the existing chimneys, but that early in its existence, a lean-~llJr; was added o the back, and the rear roof slope extended in a straight line from the existing
""idge pole to the rear of the lean-w. At a much later time, probably latter 19th Century, it is apparent that the front of the original A-roof was raised to provide additional attic or 2nd floor space at which time the three existing upstairs windows were added in the front. The building probably originated about the time that Port Tobacco (officially named Charlestown by the Md. Assembly 1727) was l:iesignated to be the County Seat. It is possible however that the house was built orior to 1727, . since there was a village known as Chandlers town at this location which was absorbed into the County Seat.
fnteri er E •••tior
The physical condition of the building is extremely endangered, but much of the Original material remains and could be preserved into the restored structure f immediate steps are taken to save it.
