Habitat = where an organism lives
• Its home
• This includes both the biotic factors = living things andabiotic factors = non-living
• Abiotic factors affect performance of biotic factors
Where do you live?
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Tolerance curve = graph of some biotic measure (D.V.) as it changes with respect to some abiotic factor (I.V.)
What is the abiotic factor?
What is the I.V.?
What is the biotic factor?
What is the D.V.?
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Acclimation = adjusting to different abiotic condition
• “getting used-to the place”

Conformers = organisms that cannot easily control their body as the abiotic conditions change
• Ectotherms = animals that change their temperature with the environment
– Cold-blooded : snakes, lizards, frogs, fish
Ecto = outside
Thermal = heat
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Regulators = organisms that can control their body as environment changes
• Endotherms = organisms that maintain a constant body temperature
– Warm-blooded: mammals & birds
– Use energy from food to “burn” for heat (chemically)
Endo = inside
Thermal = heat
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Movement: if conditions are not good, then move:
Dormant = slowing down to move in TIME
• Hibernate = mammals dormant in winter
• Brumate = ectothermsdormant in winter
• Estivate = dormant during the dry season
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Movement: if conditions are not good, then move:
Migration = moving to find necessary resources
• Resource = anything an organism needs to survive
– Food, shelter, mating
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Niche = what the organism does in the environment
• Its job, how it makes a living
• Fundamental niche = the range it could possibly use– I could eat insects and
reptiles too
• Realized niche = range it actually uses– I only eat mammals, birds,
fish, plants
– Limited by competition
What job do you do?
Ch. 19.2 Ecologypp.368-372
Generalist = organism that can live in many different environments or use many different resources
• Raccoon: lives anywhere it finds a hole, eats anything
Specialist = organism that can only live in specific places or eat specific things
• Panda: eats only bamboo
