During 2010, the Board embarked on an ambitious plan to broaden the scope and use of the Foundation, building on the steady growth and stewardship of the last three decades.

In the years ahead, you will find the Community Foundation has become a greater force to help good people do great things.

Our plan includes:

• enhanced services to our donors and fundholders;

• services for professional advisors in order to assist them as they help their clients with philanthropic planning;

• an emphasis on making it easy for donors to create permanent legacies for charities and causes close to them;

• in-depth understanding and support of local nonprofits so that these important resources receive philanthropic and community-wide investments of funds and expertise.

We hope you’ll join us – find your cause, and use the Community Foundation to make your giving tax-wise and heart-smart.

The McFadden Legacy

Power ofEndowed PhilanthropyWe think it’s important to honor those who serve others – especially those who have far-seeing philanthropy.

Mrs. McFadden passed away in 1965, but she made sure that her legacy lived forever. In 1985, assets from her trust were distributed among 35 charities and institutions, including $12.6 million to the Community Foundation to benefit 13 local charities. Boy Scouts - Longhorn Council

Over 100 friends of the Foundation attended the ToolBox Grant celebration where $330,000 was awarded to 30 area non-profit organizations.

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Grant SpotlightStressed by the demands of the economic downturn, local nonprofit organizations were delighted to receive grants for internal improvements from the Community Foundation’s 2010 ToolBox Grants.

The Foundation called these “ToolBox Grants” because they were designed to build up the capacity of organizations to serve for the long term.

The Community Foundation pa r t nered w it h pr ivate foundations, trusts and donor advisors to grant $330,000 for operational improvements.

Decide how your values and interests relate to how you give and what causes in the community are important to you and your family.

The Community Foundation of North Texas provides a locally governed, efficient vehicle where donors can establish philanthropic funds according to their interests and preferred involvement.

Gifts to funds established by donors receive maximum tax deductions, share in audit and investment costs, and benefit from the efficiencies of joint administration.

We make giving rewarding and convenient by offering you choices. You can open a fund using a variety of assets, and our ability to customize your fund makes it easy for you to give, no matter what your philanthropic priorities.

Donor Advised Funds: Donor Advised Funds are charitable funds for donors seeking active involvement in grantmaking. Donors – and their successors, if desired recommend grants from their fund to support nonprofit organizations.

Designated Funds:The donor designates a specific charitable organization as the perpetual recipient of the earnings from the endowment fund, knowing that if the charity ceases to exist, another charity serving the same needs will benefit from the endowment.

Administration fee: 85 basis points (0.85%) annually (lower fees on funds over $5 million)

Investment options: Liquid, balanced, or equity oriented

Minimum fund size: $25,000

Implement now and later4

Involve your family5

Once you’ve established and named a fund, we handle the administration — saving you time, money and energy.

Often, donors choose to first establish a donor advised fund which gives them the advantage of a private foundation without the cost and fees associated with one. Later, many donors also choose to endow their funds to ensure long-term benefit to their causes or favorite charities.

Many charitably minded people have worked with their professional advisors to create funds in the Community Foundation for administering charitable gifts in their wills and IRA’s.

The Community Foundation of North Texas involves your family in your giving and offers opportunities to learn about local issues and effective giving strategies. Together we are building a healthy community and the next generation of philanthropists.

as a Vehicle For Your Charitable Giving

Field of Interest Funds:Donors who want to target a cause or a specific community close to their heart choose a Field of Interest fund. Simple and flexible, this type of fund always remains relevant since the most effective charities doing work with the cause or in the named community receive annual distributions.

Other Funds:Talk to us about scholarship funds or unrestricted endowments – we can craft the fund that meets your desires and serves your community.

Investment managers: Luther King Capital Management; Commonfund, Inc. (other investment options are available for large funds.)

Making a Difference for the Community

Professional Advisor Cabinet

Joel Sawyer is the 2010 Professional Advisor of the Year, an honor awarded for his support of the Foundation’s mission and vision. Upon learning of his selection, he said, “I work with and admire so many professional advisors in Fort Worth, many of whom have mentored me over the years,” Sawyer said. “I am honored to have my name added to this distinguished list of advisors.”

When he was asked to describe the Foundation in four words, he simply said: “Building a better community.”

Sawyer was introduced to the Community Foundation 15 years ago when he was serving on a non-profit board. That agency was a beneficiary of the Foundation.

“In more recent years I have had the pleasure to work alongside Nancy Jones with clients that have chosen to establish donor advised funds. These funds are perfectly suited for the needs of most clients,” he said.

Sawyer, who serves and holds leadership positions on a number of local boards and is Managing Shareholder at Bakutis, McCully & Sawyer, P.C., is married to Julie Wilson Sawyer. They have two daughters, Samantha and Sarah.

The Board and staff of the Community Foundation of North Texas deeply appreciates the many professional advisors who recommend the Community Foundation to their clients and who trust the Foundation to serve their clients’ philanthropic goals.

We work with attorneys, accountants, financial planners and other advisors who want to help their clients meet charitable goals. As our partners in philanthropy, these advisors know that planned giving through the Foundation is good for clients and the community.
