Licensing
All installations of Autodesk® Simulation CFD use a network license. A network license supports a spec-
ified number of users who are connected to a network. The Network License Manager is installed on one
or more servers on the network to manage the distribution of licenses to users.
The license file andNetwork License Manager only need to be installed on the license server computer. If
you are installing only the Autodesk® Simulation CFD software, and not the Network License Manager,
you can proceed to the Installation topic.
The Licensing procedure consists of the following steps:
1. Determine the Network License Server Computer
2. Request your Network License File.
3. Install the Network License Manager
4. Configure the Network License Manager
Note: The Network License Manager should be configured prior to installing Autodesk® Simulation CFD.
Determine the License Server Computer
The Network License Manager (NLM) can be installed on the same computer as Autodesk® Simulation
CFD or on a dedicated license server computer.
If your site has a single license of Autodesk® Simulation CFD, it is probably most convenient to install the
NLM andAutodesk® Simulation CFD on the same computer. Check with your IT Administrator first,
however.
If your site has multiple licenses of Autodesk® Simulation CFD, it is good practice (although not required)
to install the NLMon a separate computer that does not have CFD installed on it. This oftenmakes man-
aging the license more convenient.
Request your Network License File
Autodesk® Simulation CFD is delivered as a collection of Functionality andCAD Interface modules. Each
module is licensed in a separate section of the license file called an INCREMENT. To create the Auto-
desk® Simulation CFD license file, you will use E-Registration to request the INCREMENT for each
module, and assemble them together into a single license file.
When you purchased Autodesk® Simulation CFD, you received a list of Serial Numbers and product
codes for the modules that you ordered. Each Serial number corresponds to an individual Functionality or
CAD Interface module.
The following steps describe how to request the license for each purchasedmodule and how to assemble
the INCREMENTS together to form the final Autodesk® Simulation CFD license file.
- 9 -
Information you will need to request your licenses:
l The serial numbers for the purchasedmodules of Autodesk® Simulation CFD.
o The serial numbers and product keys are e-mailed to the main contact on the original order
when Autodesk® Simulation CFD is purchased.
l The Host Name andHost ID of the License Server computer. To obtain the host name and ID at
theWindows command prompt:
1. At theWindows command prompt, enter ipconfig /all
2. Record the Host Name and Physical Address line. Eliminate dashes from the physical
address. This is your twelve-character host ID.
Note: If your server has more than one network adapter, select the one that cor-
responds to a physical network adapter. View the Descrisption field above each phys-
ical address. If there is more than one physical network adapter, it does not matter
which one you use. Devices such as VPN adapters, PPP adapters, andmodems are
not valid.
3. Close theWindows command prompt.
To request the license for each purchased module:
1. Go to www.autodesk.com/register.
a. If you have an account, log in with yourUser ID andPassword, and click Log In.
b. If you do not have an account, clickCreate User ID Now to create one.
- 10 -
c. If prompted to choose an account, select the appropriate account from the list, and
clickNext.
2. Enter the product operating system and Serial number.
- 11 -
a. SelectWindows as the Product's Operating System.
b. Input the Product Serial Number for one of your purchasedmodules.
c. ClickNext.
3. Enter information about the license server computer. This is the computer onwhich you plan to
install the Network License Manager.
- 12 -
a. Select theNetwork server type.
b. Enter the host name of the license server computer(s) in the Server host name
field(s).
c. Enter the Host ID in the Server ID field(s). (Do not include dashes.)
d. ClickNext.
4. The license for the module is created.
a. Save the license by clicking Save License File. Youwill be prompted to specify a
location on the local computer.
Note: The license file is automatically sent to the e-mail address associated
with your account.
b. To request the license for the next module, clickRegister and activate more
products.
- 13 -
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for each additional module that you have purchased.
l For eachmodule, be sure to enter the correct Host Name andHost ID of the license server
machine. (You should enter the same Host Name andHost ID for each license module.)
l If an incorrect value is entered for a module, that module will not function. To change the
Host ID for a license, you will have to request the license again for the serial number.
To Create the Autodesk® Simulation CFD license file:
After you have obtained the licenses for all of your purchasedmodules, you need to assemble them into a
single license file to enable Autodesk® Simulation CFD.
Note: The order of the module licenses segments within the license file does not matter.
- 14 -
A suggested technique is to rename one of the license files to a name that will be easy to remember and
copy the INCREMENT section of the other licenses into it.
1. For this procedure, we will rename the file calledSCFD2012enlicense.lic toCFDlicense.lic.
You can use any name youwant, as long as the extension is ".lic".
2. OpenCFDlicense.lic in a text editor.
3. Open one of the other module license files in a text editor. Copy the INCREMENT section into
CFDlicense.lic.
Note: Do not copy the SERVER,USE_SERVER, andVENDOR lines. The final license
file should only have one instance of each of these lines.
4. Repeat step 3 with the other module license files.
- 15 -
Note that your license file may not have the same number of INCREMENT sections shown in the example
below. The number of INCREMENTS is based on the number of modules purchased:
Note: Save the final license file in the Network License Manager installation directory of the license server
computer. (The default directory is Program Files\Autodesk License Manager.)
For reference, the complete list of product codes is listed the Product Code List topic.
License modules have a designated Product Code, andwhen a module license file is saved, the default name
is based on this code. See the Appendix for a list of the module product codes.

Install the Network License Manager
It is a good idea to install the Network License Manager on the license server computer before installing
Autodesk® Simulation CFD on individual user computers.
To install the Network License Manager on a dedicated License Server Computer:
1. Open the installationDVD, and run theNetwork License Manager.cmd script. This will run
the Network License Manager installer.
If you are installing from an electronic download instead of the DVD, run the installation
executable. After the files have been extracted, navigate to the destination folder that you
selectedwhen you started the file extraction. (The default is typically underC:\Autodesk.)
Run theNetwork License Manager.cmd script.
2. Follow the steps in the InstallationWizard to complete the installation.
Configure the License Manager
To configure a license server with LMTOOLS
You should be logged in with Administrator rights whenworking with the LMTOOLS utility.
1. Click Start > All Programs > Autodesk >Network License Manager > LMTOOLS
Utility.
2. In the LMTOOLS utility, on the Service/License File tab, make sure theConfigure Using
Services option is active.
3. Click theConfig Services tab.
4. In the Service Name list, select the service name youwant to use to manage licenses.
By default, the service name is Flexlm Service 1. If FLEXnet® is managing other software on
your computer in addition to Autodesk®, you can change the service name to avoid con-
fusion. For example, you can rename Flexlm Service 1 to Autodesk Server1.
Note: If you have more than one software vendor using FLEXnet for license management,
the Service Name list contains more than one option. Make sure that only one Autodesk
service is listed.
5. In the Path to Lmgrd.exe File field, enter the path to the Network License Manager daemon
(lmgrd.exe), or clickBrowse to locate the file.
By default, this daemon is installed in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License
- 17 -
Manager folder.
6. In the Path to the License File box, locate or enter the path.
This is the path to the license file obtained through autodesk.com or the location where you
placed the license file if you obtained it offline.
7. In the Path to the Debug Log File box, enter a path to create a debug log, or clickBrowse to
locate an existing log file.
It is recommended that you save to the C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Man-
ager folder. The log file must have a .log file extension. For new log files, youmust enter the
.log extensionmanually.
8. To run lmgrd.exe as a service, selectUse Services.
9. To start lmgrd.exe automatically when the system starts, select Start Server at Power Up.
10. Click Save Service to save the new configuration under the service name you selected in step 4.
ClickYeswhen prompted if you would like to save the settings to the service.
11. Click the Start/Stop/Reread tab and do one of the following:
l If a service has not yet been defined for Autodesk, click Start Server to start the
license server.
l If a service for Autodesk is already defined and running, clickReRead License File
to refresh the Network License Manager with any changes made to the license file or
options file.
The license server starts running and is ready to respond to client requests.
12. Close LMTOOLS.

work License Manager is installed on a single server. License man-
agement and activity is restricted to this server. A single license file
contains the total number of licenses available on the server.
o Distributed License Server: In the distributed license server
model, licenses are distributed across multiple servers. A unique
license file is required for each server. To create a distributed license
- 20 -
server, youmust run the Network License Manager on each server
that is part of the distributed server pool.
o Redundant License Server: In the redundant license server model,
you use three servers to authenticate a single license file. One server
acts as the master, while the other two provide backup if the master
server fails. Licenses are monitored and issued as long as at least two
servers are functional. The license file on all three servers is the same.
Youmust install the Network License Manager on each server.
Check with your system administrator if you are unsure whichmodel to
select.
l Enter the name of the license server computer what will run the Network License
Manager (NLM).
