F
or years, management accountants and finance professionals have
used the letters CMA and CFM to emphasize their broad business
competence and strategic financial mastery and have been rewarded
for their efforts with greater job satisfaction and higher compensation.
Salary surveys have shown that, over the course of a career, a CMA or CFM
will earn nearly $500,000 more than a noncerti fied professional .
IMA’s prestigious global certifications, CMA and CFM, tell the world
that you are an informed and highly skilled professional with a standard
of excellence that is grounded on a strong ethical foundation and a lifelong
commitment to learning. CMAs and CFMs can be depended upon by
businesses around the world not only for accounting, financial, and
information management, but for the kind of strategic planning needed to
position a company globally.
Add the convenience of individual scheduling and a user-friendly, computer-
based exam format, and you quickly come to the same conclusion as Marjorie
Kiesel, CMA, Director of Accounting Analysis and Operations for IBM-Asia
Pacific, For management accountants and financial managers in the changing
world of global business, it’ s just a better fit. And convenient. Too convenient,
in fact, to even consider not doing it .
IMA’s computerized certification exams are now given in more than 400
cities throughout the world. More are being added as demand for the certifica-
tions grows. The computerized format makes it easy to schedule your exams at
the time and place most convenient for you. For a complete listing of examina-tion locations, please visit our website.
“The CMA cert if icat ion was a plus when I was being
considered for posit ions. Also, it sets of f a chain.
Having t he CMA requires you to maint ain your CPE, so
you are in an environment where you keep on learni ng.
It provides the discipl ine to keep learning. It helps you
be promotable on the job and not get stuck.”

I n the 1980s, Sandra Turner decided that she
wanted more from her auditing job at Deloitte
& Touche. She was interested in d oing proactive
work that would directly impact a company’s
day-to-day business activity, instead of auditing
from a distance. She contemplated pursuing an
MBA, but the t ime commitment was too muchfor her already busy schedule.
Instead, Turner studied a stack o f books and passed
a ser ies of exams t o becom e a Cer t i f ied Management
Accountant (CMA) in 19 86 and Cert i f ied in Financia l
Management ( CFM) in 1 99 7. The two cer t i f icat ions helped
her establish credibil i ty and expertise in the new areas of
work that interested her. And ult imat ely, they helped her start
her own company, Turner Consulting, in 1995. Her Bloomington firm works with emerging and middle-
market companies that are under-performing, rapidly growing, or have other developmental issues.
“CMA and CFM

It’s All About The Networking
I
MA’s chapters span the globe. At any given time, you can find IMA
members getting together somewhere to exchange new ideas. Give
yourself the chance to connect, in person, with other professionals like
yourself. Talk about the interests and issues that matter to you ... find a mentor
or a new job. IMA chapters open doors to new opportunities and leadership
experiences.
IMA networking also means connecting with other members online. Log
onto an IMA Industry Sector or Member Interest Group (M IG) . Both offer global
online platforms that connect IMA members quickly and easily to other
members in their industry or function.
Industry Sectors—these are entirely Internet-based, provide instant online
surveys, a directory of members with company names and e-mail addresses,
and an “ Info drop-off,” where members can share documents online. Each
Industry Sector has its own e-mail exchange, allowing members to ask
questions and get advice from their colleagues in the group. Sectors cover
the following industries:
Member Int erest Groups—The Controllers Council, The Cost Management
Group, and The Small Business Council provide newsletters 10 times per year,
both in print and online, on current topics of professional interest. Members
can access an extensive database of other MIG members online and connect for
quick advice via the three MIG e-mail exchanges.
E-M ail Exchang es— IMA has six open e-mail exchanges, in addition to those
connected to the MIGs and Industry Sectors. Open to all IMA members, these
popular e-mail exchanges often have lively discussions.

Letter From an IMA Chapter President
To All:
When I took over the role of the chapter presidency... the economy wasbooming, the stock markets were breaking new highs every day, andcompanies were offering the moon to entice employees to join their firms.
Today, as I write my final chapter president’s letter, the NASDAQ is cut inhalf, many options are worthless, and people are being let go as fast as theywere hired. This is the time when professional associations such as IMA are
really important. The IMA is a perfect place to network and to learn newthings to bring value to your present organization or to give you the extraleg-up on competi tors for those in the job market. Use your membership toyour advantage. At tend meetings. Join the board of directors. Become active.Step forward and assist. It does not take much time, maybe two hours permonth, but as I can attest, I have received value 10 times over for every hour
I have put in. Thank you again for allowing me this wonderful opportunity, and I hope to see all of you at future IMA events.
