EVERYBODY HAS A STORY It’s story time in the RCIA Inquiry Period and sharing stories is the focus of the day! Everyone’s life story does contain God moments even if they are not recognized immediately. Observe the following story: "I've changed. I didn't think I needed to change. And I didn't even expect this would happen. I can open my heart now. I'm so full of joy--my wife and I couldn't stop talking about this journey and our amazement that God brought me here. I wasn't sure if my extended family would come to the Easter Vigil when I was baptized. But they did, and even though I was leaving their faith tradition, they were so joyful for me.” (Anonymous)
Why not write a short message of God working in your life and send it to [email protected] giving us permission to share it. It’s your way of evangelizing!

HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS
It’s summertIme, summertIme, sumsumsummertIme …
…and because it’s Summertime, many of us are out and about, interacting with people in a more
relaxed and slowed-down setting. This often provides better opportunities to catch up, or to get to
know new people. If you are someone who wants to share the treasure of your faith with others, but
are not quite sure how, be inspired by these words by David Lichter, Executive Director of the
National Association of Catholic Chaplains:
As one who does not wear my faith on my sleeve and shrinks from most overt expressions of
my belief in public settings, I always find consolation and encouragement in the phrase,
“Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope,
but do it with gentleness and reverence…” First of all, if someone actually sees me as a
hopeful person and asks why, I am touched by that. Has that happened to you? How do you
respond? Part of me wants to ask, “What did you see that made you think I am hopeful?”
So how do we “be ready”? If we take just a few
minutes from time to time to reflect on how
God has shown His presence in our lives, both in
the ‘good’ moments, and in the times of
challenge or crisis, we’ll be ready to share some
of that while we’re answering the questions of
“How are you?”, and “What’s new?” Put words
to ‘the reason for your hope’ … where have
you experienced the faithfulness of God?
Fitting this ‘added bonus’ information into your
answers to their routine social questions could
inspire a deepening of the conversation and/or
a deepening of their own hope!

MARRIAGE, REVISITED A few weeks ago I wrote about marriage. I received some positive responses and worthwhile questions. So I return to the subject today.
Jesus thinks marriage is a big deal. In the Gospels, Jesus held very high standards for marriage. He rejected the Jewish practice of granting a “no-fault” divorce to any man who asked. Once the Church reached countries where women, too, were legally allowed to request divorce, Jesus’ apostles extended the same teaching to Christian women.
Saint Paul explains Jesus’ high standards in terms of a sacrament, a public sign of God’s grace that realizes the grace it signifies. Paul says marriage is a sacrament of Christ and the Church: The love shared by husband and wife should become for everyone who knows them a public sign of the love shared by Christ and his Church.
In the Catholic tradition, a Christian marriage signifies grace especially in four qualities: 1. Partnership: Husband and wife enter into partnership with each other. Each assumes responsibility for the
other. They owe each other obedience and self-sacrificing love. 2. Permanence: Just as Christ never abandons the people he has called to himself, husband and wife do not
abandon each other. They do not “move on” to look for a better relationship. 3. Fidelity: Husband and wife entrust themselves to each other in an exclusive way. The completeness of their
gift to each other prevents them from giving themselves to third parties. Their fidelity is sealed in their sexual bond. Christ and his Church also share an exclusive Communion with each other.
4. Fertility: By the first three qualities, husband and wife perfect each other for the gift of children. Christian husbands and wives pledge to accept their children and nurture them to maturity. But even couples who are not gifted with children still signify the same grace by extending warm hospitality to the public.
So if you get engaged, you and your fiancé(e) should make an appointment with a priest or deacon to make sure your marriage meets Jesus’ standards. Because marriage for Christians is a sacramental act of worship, you will be expected to marry in a church building. (If you marry a non-Catholic Christian, it is often possible to marry in your fiancé(e)’s church.) You will likely be asked to take marriage preparation classes, and your priest will question you about your readiness to marry. You may also wish to plan for a big party, but parties are not required: If necessary, you may marry in the church at no cost.
If you got married but didn’t get the blessing of the Church, it’s not too late. Call me or email me, and I’ll help you arrange for a “validation” of your marriage.
If you’ve been married before, then marrying a second time (or validating a second marriage) could be more complicated. Often, such couples will obtain an annulment of their earlier marriage(s). Annulments used to require as many as thirty pages of notes in response to an extensive questionnaire, but they’re now much easier to apply for. Thanks to Bp. Zubik and Our Campaign for The Church Alive!, they’re also free. Again, call me if you want to talk about this.
