IS YOUR SERVICE A SAFE PLACE?
Safe Place is an initiative of ACON's Anti-Violence Project. It was
launched in 1991 in response to street-based homophobic vio-
lence and sought to identify businesses, cafes, and shops, which
would provide a safe refuge from such incidences. You may recall
the pink triangle sticker around Sydney.
So far over 100 services, businesses, cafes, and venues across
NSW have signed up to be Safe Places. In our regions that in-
cludes places such as: Events Cinema Newcastle, Roladoor Café, Unity Nightclub, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, Carrie’s
Place, The Press Bookshop, Blackbird Corner, Diabolik Tattoo, headspace Maitland, the Pacific Clinic, Raymond Terrace
Youth Centre, Teale Café Maitland, The Loft Youth Arts and Cultural Centre, Armidale Women’s Centre, Newcastle Li-
brary, Family Planning Newcastle, Clinic 468 Tamworth, Saluna Café, Bean Bar Café Taree, Tenterfield Counselling Service,
Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre, The Terrace Bar, Kincumber Youth Centre, Terrigal 50+ Leisure and learning Centre….
and many more.
We’d like to increase the list! Is your service a Safe Place? Do you know safe places for LGBTI people in your region?
In order to remain relevant within the current social climate, the Safe Place program now engages and welcomes busi-
nesses, services, shops, cafes, etc. that are welcoming, supportive, and actively engaged with the LGBTI community, and
provide a safe space for LGBTI people to express themselves.
All Safe Places need to go through an application process. You can complete this online here: http://www.formstack.com/
forms/?1373593-nVVxKEIGtv
The application is simple but we created it to make sure that Safe Places are committed to being welcoming and safe to
all in the LGBTI communities. It's a big rainbow these days and this program is all about inclusivity and celebration. Your
business or service will also be loaded into an interactive map that'll live in both Facebook and the Safe Place website.

RYSA AWARDS 2013 P A G E 5
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YOUTH ACTION? The Youth Action & Policy Association NSW - formerly known as YAPA for short - is now known as Youth Action for short. Youth Action also has a new website: www.youthaction.org.au
Policy
Youth Action has been investigating ways to reduce the number of young people who drop out of their traineeship early, and has produced new policy papers on educational transitions and on apprenticeships and traineeships.
Additionally, we're researching the impact of Newstart and other income payments on young people, with a focus on young people leaving care.
Youth health has been central to policy work at Youth Action, with policy papers on smoking, and sexual health, and with the launch, in the future, of another on mental health.
Similarly, work on domestic violence, intimate partner violence and family violence has found that there is a broad misunderstanding about what these things mean, particularly with young people. We're working with the NSW Government to develop a domestic violence frame-work that will support young people. More information: www.youthaction.org.au/youth-action-latest
The Regional Youth Services Awards RYSA’s) were held Tuesday 25th June at the conclusion of the annual RYDON conference. It was a
fantastic evening of celebration with young people, youth sector workers, youth friendly business and youth events being recognised.
The annual Aboriginal artwork auction was also held with two paintings sold to help fund next year’s RYDON Aboriginal Art Grant.
Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners this year.

Are you looking for funding for an idea?
Do you have a plan for service delivery to help the community you live in?
Head over to the community builders website. It has a great search function that allows you to look through available grants
from the private and government sector.
Many of the available grants are ongoing so they never close. If you want to see all grants available just choose “all” in each
category.

On the couch with... Name: Liberty Hickson Or Libby
Position: Sexual Assault Clinician
Why do you do what you do? 1 IN 3 females and 1 IN 6 males are sexually abused
before the age of 18. This statistic is shocking to many people. I feel privileged to
be able to provide support and counselling to those who have been impacted by
sexual assault and I have a passion to provide community education around the
prevalence and impact of this issue. Sexual assault is an act that takes away an
individual’s power and part of my role is to assist people to take back power and
control and I have meet some extraordinary and wonderful people in my job.
Favourite quote? Respect is something you earn. You can’t beg, borrow or steal it.
It’s a process of right doings.-Graeme A.S. Browne
Favourite Food? Mediterranean but I love most foods really.
Music? I’m loving Macklemore at the moment but I enjoy a variety of tunes de-
pending on what I’m doing.
Who inspires you? My grandmother.
Where will you be in ten years? HHmmm? I think I will still be advocating for clients rights and providing services. And
hopefully more travelled.
