The vinyl siding industry has made numerous

improvements in formulation since the product was first

produced in the late 1950’s

– Product can be produced faster

– Co-extrusion

– Resists impacts

– Electronic color blending

– Allows an unlimited range of colors

– Smooth finishes without harsh light reflection

These improvements led to the development of a wide

range of decorative architectural trim and accessories

Today’s vinyl siding beautifully replicates wood, without

wood’s maintenance issues or high cost

Options for profile design, colors, and architectural trim

and accessories continue to grow, and now vinyl and other

polymeric siding can be used to achieve virtually any

architectural style

Vinyl and other polymeric siding have the advantage of

simple maintenance

– Never requires painting, staining, or sealing

– Can be cleaned with mild soap and water

With the ability to withstand high winds and a composition

that resists heat, cold, and moisture, vinyl and other

polymeric siding retain their great looks over time

Warranties offered by vinyl and other polymeric siding

manufacturers are among the longest and strongest in the

cladding industry

Using recognized life cycle assessment tools

and fact-based data, vinyl and insulated siding

demonstrate remarkable better environmental

performance than other exterior cladding

Vinyl siding beats fiber cement and brick hands

down and rivals cedar siding in overall green

performance

Insulated siding helps increase the exterior wall’s

R-value and contributes to a homes’ energy

efficiency

Vinyl siding has the lowest installed cost of any

exterior cladding, whether for new construction

or remodeling

Architects/designers and other building product

specifiers want assurance that the homes they’re

designing will look beautiful and are durable with

the passage of time

Vinyl and insulated siding are the only exterior

claddings with both third-party product

certification and certified installer programs

VSI Certification Programs

Since 1998, the VSI Product Certification Program has

allowed manufacturers to certify with independent, third-

party verification that their products meet or exceed the

industry standard for quality – ASTM D3679 – Certified products are tested for weatherability, windload,

impact resistance, expansion and shrinkage, surface

distortion, length, width, and thickness verification

The program was expanded in 2010 to include

polypropylene siding certification based on ASTM D7254 – Certified products are tested for impact resistance,

weathering, windload resistance and flame spread

In 2013 insulated siding certification was added based on

ASTM D7793 – Certified insulated siding must demonstrate a minimum

thermal resistance, or R-value, of at least R-2.0

The VSI Product Certification Program also includes

third-party verification for vinyl and insulted siding color

retention to ASTM D6864 for solid colors and ASTM

D7251 for multi-hued or variegated colors

VSI Product Certification Program

Page 11: Certified Vinyl Siding...Certified Vinyl Siding Engineered Enhanced Beauty Presented by: Fernando Pagés Ruiz This webinar will use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Please makeUpon

Currently, more than 780 vinyl siding

products and 40 polypropylene siding

products are certified for quality through

VSI’s program

More than 360 vinyl siding colors are

currently certified for color retention

Approximately 98 percent of all vinyl

siding reported to be manufactured in the

United States is certified through the VSI

program

VSI Certified Installer Program

The VSI Certified Installer Program trains and

tests experienced vinyl siding installers on

their knowledge of proper vinyl siding

installation techniques based on the industry

standard, ASTM D4756

All VSI Certified Installers must apply for

recertification every three years, ensuring

that they are using the most up-to-date

installation techniques

When certified, installers are listed

on the Official Registry of Certified Installers

found on VSI’s website, www.vinylsiding.org

Currently, there are nearly 3,000 individuals

certified under this program

stories of living space.
