Internal auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization to accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance.

The challenges in the profession of internal auditing reflect prevalently in today's business realm. Global competition, downsizing, re-engineering, security risks of advanced technology, and the effects of the economy are just a few of the factors that create new challenges for internal auditors. Professionally certified internal auditors are crucial to ensure that internal auditing activities are being managed effectively and efficiently.

In Malaysia, the requirements of Bursa Malaysia have made it mandatory for public-listed companies to set up internal audit function. This move will help to enhance Corporate Governance – bringing unique value to the board room, protecting stakeholders of organizations, and ensuring the highest degree of proficiency, professionalism and ethics. This further requires internal auditors to keep abreast with the best internal auditing practices and standards issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors.

CIA candidates must complete 24 months of internal auditing or its equivalent. Equivalent experience refers to audit or assessment disciplines, including external auditing, quality assurance, compliance and internal control.

Candidates for CIA Certification

Examination Structure

There is one examination per part, which is administered by computer-based testing (CBT). The examination can be taken in any sequential order of parts.

Part 1The examination has 125 multiple-choice questions and candidates are given 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the examination.

Part 2 and Part 3The examination has 100 multiple-choice questions and candidates are given 2 hours to complete the examination.

A scaled score of 600 out of 800 is required in order to pass the examination. A scaled score of 600 is equivalent to achieving 75% correct answer on an examination of a similar difficulty level.

Candidate has an eligibility period of four years. Candidate must complete all examinations and fulfil certification requirement within the four years given. If a candidate fails to complete the certification process within four years, all fees and exam parts will be forfeited.

The CIA candidates must fulfil one of the following entry requirements:

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree or professional qualification such as ACCA, ICAEW, CPA or their equivalent, or

• Be in the final year of your Bachelor’s degree at time of registration

Workshop StructureThe workshops are conducted on Saturday and Sunday at Sunway College in Bandar Sunway, Selangor.
