Maggie, now on her second run, turned the first corner sharp, and was making down the Green at a fine pace, her birse evidently rising. Long Legs again passed her near the foot of the Green, and again was in the Burn. He failed, however, this time in his run for the starting post to pass the mare, but recovering more quickly at the hillock, he reached Maggie as she was again turning at the bottom of the Green; spurning the accursed Burd he at tremendous speed finished the third round far up the hillock. It was now a case of wonderful steadiness and beautiful pacing against swift but uncontrolled speed. Gradually the little mare with her “heavy weight” drew slightly ahead each round, and though a bit “wubbit” won by not quite half the length of the last stretch. At the finish, proud and knowing, she stood bowing her head and champing her bit as the locals cheered and shouted themselves hoarse. It was Maggie Lauder’s fourth win of this annual race. A tall, long-legged animal goes away forty yards ahead of the others; a more solid brown beast is second. Third is little “Maggie Lauder”, a dapple grey pony, and a local favourite, ridden by her owner, Wull Stewart. Maggie’s powers were well known, but everyone said, “Wull was owre heavy for the beastie”. The fourth and last is a “camsteerie” brute that at the very first brae neither bit nor bridle could keep from dashing in among the crowd seated there. This animal was immediately disqualified. Six times around Ceres Course looks easier than it is. The four corners at unusually short distances are the “snag” which offends many a horse. Number one, in taking the stretch alongside the Brae, rushed so wildly that instead of turning the corner at the foot of the Green, he ran on into the Burn. Number two, though not so fleet, inclined to go the same road.

Ceres Highland Games 2015

This extract from the book “The Croft House Andersons” published in 1933, colourfully depicts Ceres Games and Races from days gone by. The horse-racing, in particular, was an event which is much missed by many villagers.

Ceres Races The day begins in the ancient square of the High Street, Ceres Brass Band marching into its precincts amid exultant music. The Free Masons of Ceres are lining up at their Lodge overlooking the Auld Brig. With flags flying and dressed in their full panoply of office with the Band at their head, they gaily step out on their annual march through the principal streets of the village. For the remainder of the long June day interest centres on the famous Bow Butts (Ceres Green) where take place the crowning events of the ancient Fair. “For this is June’s great gala day, When men rin wud, and youngster’s play; The day that marks the grand return Of Ceres men frae Bannockburn.” (Wood’s, Ceres Races) “The Derby” Four horses are starting. TROUBLE IS NOT MY MIDDLE NAME

Liz Lochhead – National Poet Trouble is not my middle name. It is not what I am. I was not born for this. Trouble is not a place Though I am in it deeper than the deepest wood and I’d get out of it (who wouldn’t?) if I could. Hope is what I do not have in hell – not without good help, now. Could you listen, listen hard and well to what I cannot say except by what I do? And when you say I do it for badness this much is true: I do it for badness done to me before any badness that I do to you. Hard to unfankle this. But you can help me. Loosen all these knots and really listen. I cannot plainly tell you this, but, if you care, then — beyond all harm and hurt – real hope is there.

THE COMMUNITY CINEMA The Community Cinema took a step forward last Thursday evening in Craigrothie Village Hall. There was a dummy run to test the available equipment and happy to say the big screen borrowed from Colinsburgh, Alex Hardy’s projector and the hall sound system all worked well. An audience of about 20 enjoyed "The Illusionist" an animation from a story by Jacques (M Hulot) Tati. The project will move on with plans being laid for our first season from September to Christmas with a film about every two weeks.

Members of the community will be kept in the picture.

The full minutes of all CDCC meetings are posted on the Community notice Board in the Ceres Car Park and are emailed out to everyone on the Ceres and District Diary email list, they can also be viewed on the

Ceres and District Diary website and Facebook Page. Meetings are open to all members of the Community.
