Community events provide many opportunities for involvement and also contribute to keeping community members connected by bringing people together and helping to build bonds and relationships. In coming together for community events such as the Lantern Parade, we overcome our differences, feel supported and experience social inclusion and cultural development.

This community is amazing. Come together, celebrate, enjoy!

The annual Lantern Parade is a fabulous example of community working together to achieve something amazing; the lantern workshops, event setup, the parade, the sculpture, the drumming, the bonfire, the fire twirlers, MCs, band, fire brigade, photographers, catering providers, cooks and servers; and of course, the community who came together to enjoy the event.

The Lantern Parade would not be possible without the support of so many people in this amazing community. Everyone coming together to share their ideas, skills and abilities. It is a joy to be a part of this supportive and creative energy.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, there is something for everyone… the children from Wombats created some beautiful lanterns, many children worked alongside their parents and carers at the lantern workshops to make some amazing lantern creations and a team of volunteers worked together to make the lantern sculpture that led the parade.

community? Is there an issue that is bothering you that we could discuss and try to address at community level? Please send me an email or give me a call – my door is always open.

Meanwhile, I am excited to be hosting two UTAS Social Work students again this semester and we have plans to engage them in a couple of new and exciting community development projects. The first is the joint project with Woodbridge School, the Wellbeing Project which will look at developing the skills and resilience of the students and school community.

The second project comes out of our strategic planning session and that is to look at Transport Options for the Channel. Given the social connectedness that already exists in our community, this project has the potential to be hugely successful and I am hoping that we may be able to look at ride-share and car-pooling options with the aim of becoming a more sustainable community.

A lot going on indeed!

I hope to see you all up at West Winds soon and make sure you come along to the Mid-winter Feast to share some good food, good stories and meet the great neighbours.

See you soon.

Sue

ps thanks to Renee Miller and Chris Crerar for the beautiful lantern parade shots on page 5

July marks my 7 year anniversary of being the Director at West Winds – and what an action packed, fun, heart-warming 7 years it has been. When I started, I knew that West Winds had the potential to become the “welcoming heart of the Channel” and with the support of the community and the West Winds team we set about developing West Winds to be the vibrant community centre that it is today. Working with such a hugely supportive and engaged community has allowed our programs to morph and develop so that we are much more community focussed and community driven and I do believe that we are well on the way to achieving our vision. Mind you, I won’t be taking my foot off the accelerator just yet as I see plenty of opportunity for community development ahead.

The recent Mid-Winter Lantern Parade is a classic example of our community coming together at West Winds to make it a fabulous event. The good feeling and friendly atmosphere that was generated warmed the cockles of my heart – even more so than that excellent mulled wine! We received such positive feedback on the night I realise that West Winds is now both a relevant and essential community resource for people to meet, socialise and connect. It was wonderful to see new faces among our old, familiar ones and I can proudly say that the West Winds team is honoured to be part of this wonderful Channel community.

We will continue to review and evolve our program to better meet the needs of our community and I encourage you all to let us know how we are travelling. Are we meeting your needs and expectations? Should we be working on bigger issues impacting our

A quiet mind brings a sense of peace and encourages inner strength. Research shows that meditation also has many physiological as well as mental benefits. When the normally incessant mental dialogue ceases for a while then anxiety falls away and this facilitates healing on many levels. Practicing meditation in a group creates an atmosphere that enhances the process making it easier to learn. In these sessions you will be guided through the processes that led to a quiet mind and a feeling of peace.

There's a town called Kettering in Northamptonshire, UK. It has a population of 86,000. There's a town in Ohio, USA, called Kettering with a population of 57,000. I prefer the Kettering in Tasmania. Postcode 7155. Population around 1000.

Here's why.

I like Kettering because there's a notable absence of either scorn or derision when collecting Post Office mail wearing muddy wellies and clothes from the charity shop.

I like Kettering because where else would a charming post office lady offer you three free zucchinis along with your letters?

I like Kettering because you can lose six-love at tennis and still be friends with your conqueror who may well repeat the same dose next week.

I like the coastal tracks where the wind whispers through the trees and offshore sunbathing seals are the only companions.

I like sailing an el-cheapo fibreglass boat to Dennes Point and back pretending it's a voyage of courage, determination, bravery and knowing that you'll be back in time for tea.

I like the community's can-do attitude and a determination to protect what we have.

I like the treasures at the free library at Kettering Hall and the photographs in the foyer echoing times past.

I like the white-fenced cricket oval and the chips at the shop.

I like the nearby bush garden, which was once a gravel dump.

I like the welcoming embrace of the hills behind the townsite.

I like the marinas where sailors gather to scrape and paint and plane and dream of fresh voyages.

I like the intellectual thrust of the blokes book club where, helped by sausage rolls and fruit cake, the world can be put back in running order in less than two hours.

I like the willingness of people to collect roadside litter - cans, food wrappings, milk cartons - dumped by uncaring people lacking a sense of duty.

But above all, I Iike driving home, passing my friend Peter's weatherboard house, past the blue house, past the church, past the symbols of local currency (horse poo $2 a bag) until finally the Channel comes into view. And that's why I prefer Kettering 7155 to Kettering, Northants and Kettering, Ohio because it's a fine place to call home.

Middleton Community Hall All welcome to attend.

South Channel Garden Club

I have many plants in my garden, some more successful than others. One mark of success is the ability to survive dry conditions, look attractive, create interesting colour, form and texture, and survive the ravages of our wild friends!

One group of plants that ticks all these boxes is Acacia Cognata in its many forms.

Although its common name is Bower wattle or River wattle, we know one of its most common cultivars as “Limelight”.

I realise that I set great store by these plants, as I have several cultivars in the garden.

“Limelight” is a low growing, compact form, that forms a weeping ball of foliage. I’ve seen them growing over banks, where the foliage forms a soft cascade. They also look terrific in a mixed bed, as their compact lime green foliage adds contrast amongst other shrubs.

“Fettuccine” is a slightly larger shrub to about 60 cm, with slightly larger crinkly leaves. Still beautifully green cascading foliage.

“Copper Tips” is a small tree with soft weeping foliage, with coppery tips to the leaves. These flower well – the usual golden balls of the acacia.

“Winter Flame” is a more compact form of Copper Tips, to about 80 cm.

“Mop top” is a standard limelight, and “Waterfall” is a standard with long cascading tresses.

I have found that new plants start slowly, but really beef up in their second season. If they dry out too much, the centre can become brown and dry. It has been suggested that they can be pruned, but I haven’t tried this.

They like well-drained soil, and like all acacias, are quite shallow rooted. In my windy garden, I stake the trees to stop them blowing out of

the ground. They can also be quite brittle.

I do find them a bit susceptible to mealy bug, scale and aphids. I apply eco oil for this. Soapy water spray could also be applied.

Now, here’s the thing, and I don’t want to raise anyone’s hopes, but…Possums don’t seem to like them, and….maybe Wallabies and Pademelons aren’t too keen either.

Kim Walker
