BEGINNING ASSIGNMENT: PERSONALIZED MUGYour Objective is to create a ceramic vessel by forming a slab of clay around a cylindrical form. The surface of the vessel will be embellished with a pattern created through impressions from stamps and clay carving techniques. The vessel will be finished off with a ring foot and a handle.

The VesselThe vessel must meet the following requirements:1. It must be constructed around the provided cylinder form.2. It must include your first name carved somewhere on the surface of the mug3. It must contain a vertical or horizontal patterned surface created with impressions from stamps and carvings.4. It must have a raised ring foot on which it stands.5. It must have some style of handle

CERAMICS GRADING RUBRIC5 Excellent:1. The ceramic piece exceeds the expected and

exceeds all of the assignment requirements.2. The ceramic pice demonstrates outstanding

craftsmanship in the build and finish of the piece and an excellent understanding of technical aspects of the ceramic process;• clean smooth edges• all parts attached properly• thickness and hollow forms considered

3. The design shows thought, effort, purpose and originality with a strong sense of detail and complexity with a well composed form and a clear center of interest and no distracting elements and a high degree of construction challenge.

4 Strong:1. The ceramic form shows strong understanding

in what is expected in the assignment and exceeds all of the assignment requirements.

2. Craftsmanship is good and shows overall good effort with good technique in terms of construction• edges and finish may not be the best possible.• all parts attached properly• thickness and hollow forms considered

3. Somewhat lacking in originality, thought and intent with some detail and complexity in design and an average level of construction challenge.

3 Capable:1. The ceramic form shows a basic understanding

in what is expected in the assignment and meets the minimum expected requirements.

2. Craftsmanship is adequate and demonstrates a basic understanding of ceramic build techniques.• edges are rough and unfinished• most parts attached properly

3. There is very little detail or originality in the concept and/or little to no construction challenge.

2 Limited:1. the ceramic piece is below average, poor

technique, not properly constructed to survive the firing process and parts not properly attached using the score slip and weld method.

2. Poor craftsmanship with no understanding of ceramic build techniques.

3. Lacks any originality in concept or detail characteristics with little to no construction challenge.

1 Unacceptable:1. No effort. Last minute, not worthy of high

school ceramics.2. No evidence of thought in either the design or

the construction with little to no technique or thought in the design.

LEVEL ONE ASSIGNMENT: RIVER ROCK

Semester final, part A

This is the construction portion of your studio final; it is completed several weeks in advance, bisque fired, then kept safely in your locker until the final weeks of the semester when you complete the surface design. The surface design is part B, the main portion of the final.

In order to ensure that each of you has a project that made it safely through the bisque firing process, we are completing the construction portion (part A) several weeks in advance. This will allow you time to remake it in case of a mishap.

You must have the completed bisqueware final river rock project by the following date__________________________

Procedure for part A of your final:Construct the project according to the demonstration directions. These directions are also reiterated on a form that is available as a handout.

When complete, put your name and period on the bottom and put it on the greenware shelf to be bisque fired.

Draw a rendering of your three related icons and your proposed handle in the box.

BEGINNING ASSIGNMENT: RIVER ROCKYour Objective is to create a ceramic vessel by forming a slab of clay around a river rock. The surface of the vessel will be painted with a pattern created through the use of three related icons based upon a theme. The handle of the rock will be a representation of the theme demonstrated by the three repeating icons on the surface.

The VesselThe vessel must meet the following requirements:1. It must be constructed around your chosen rock form.2. It must have a three dimensional handle that represents your theme.3. The rock must have a ring foot and a flange that holds the lid in place.
