QUIÉNES SOMOSABOUT US

CARLOS MADRIDDIRECTOR

Cheers from Instituto Cervantes de Manila!

Thanks to the growing interest in the Spanish language and the solid collaboration with the Philippine authorities, our spaces for academic and cultural activities will be expanded by the month of May. We are proud to present CASA AZUL, the cultural space that the Instituto Cervantes offers, expanding our Makati facilities to Intramuros.

This beautiful and historical architecture with a large landscaped courtyard in the heart of Manila is a two-storey 415-square meter space that has been equipped with an 95-seater auditorium and a 60-square meter exhibition hall. On its upper floor, the Miguel Hernández Library, a gathering place for Spanish students and participants of the cultural activities of the Cervantes Institute, has a magnificent reading room. The two spacious classrooms on the upper floor will offer Spanish courses to those who are interested in learning this language in an effective, economical and fun way.

With this space, Instituto Cervantes de Manila fortifies its cultural and educational range of activities in Manila, in general and Intramuros, in particular, with the satisfaction of serving as a focal point for the dissemination in the Philippines of Spanish culture as well as that of Spanish-speaking countries; today more than ever with an eye on Iberoamerican cultures.

With the celebration of Viva Europa 2018 as backdrop, in the next few pages you will come across a schedule full of cultural and academic activities right in your fingertips.

Do not forget to visit us... also in Intramuros!

¿POR QUÉ SE ESCOGIÓ MANILA?

WHY MANILA?

The events that took place between the Legazpi expedition to the Philippines in 1565, until the foundation of Manila in 1571, brings forward several questions regarding the objectives for the colonization of the Philippine archipelago by the Spaniards. However, a close lecture of the history offers key aspects on the strategic turn from Cebu to Luzon. The Spaniards engaged in a conflict with the Portuguese and simultaneously learned about new opportunities that arouse due to the closeness with China.

Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2016, the exhibition Unfinished finds a new host in the historic Walled City of Manila as the San Ignacio Church becomes the venue where local enthusiasts will be able to view it for three months from the 21st of June, a project made possible by the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECD), the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the Intramuros Administration and the Escuela Taller de Filipinas Foundation. Showcasing man’s ingenuity in the face of adversity, the exhibit is a photographic series of possible solutions to problems that have emerged from the financial crisis affecting Spain since 2008 that has made the practice of architecture unfeasible and has thus led to the abandonment of construction projects, consequently resulting into many unfinished buildings. The exhibit seeks to direct attention to processes more than results in an attempt to discover design strategies generated by an optimistic view of the constructed environment. These projects have understood the lessons of the recent past and consider architecture to be something unfinished, in a constant state of evolution and truly in the service of humanity. The current moment of uncertainty in the architectural profession makes its consideration here especially relevant.

By virtue of the Republic Act No. 9187, which was initiated by Senator Edgardo Angara, the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day was established on July 22, 2002. It highlights the strong links between the Philippines andSpain. Since 2003, it is celebrated every June 30, commemorating the date of 1899 when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, then president of the Malolos Republic, issued a decree to treat as friends the last Spanish soldiers who had resisted inside the Baler’s church for almost one year, and that they be provided all the necessary assistance for their return to Spain.Today, it is the symbol of the friendship between both countries.
