June 2013 Volume 2 (5) Memorial Day weekend has unofficially become known as “the start of summer” and is the beginning of the summer travel season for many. During your own warm-weather travels on roadways, you may have begun noticing an increase in traffic along with more diverse modes of transportation. Sunny days and mild temps promote throngs of motorcycle enthusiasts to hit the highways. Antique and muscle car collectors may travel in droves to rallies and other events to show-off their prized possessions. Convertibles and Jeeps are undoubtedly traveling with tops down and in some cases, doors off. Add to this, mopeds, bicyclists, pedestrians, and joggers and we are faced with much distraction and a greater need for concentration. A heightened awareness should be in effect to realize the limitations and lack of safety features for many of these transportation modes. Unfortunately, even the most responsible driver gets distracted and accidents will occur.
