Centre for International Dialogue since 1979

The year 2019, 23 August to be precise, marks the 40th anniversary of the official handover of the Vienna International Centre (VIC) to the United Nations. Vienna thus became one of the official headquarters of the UN, together with New York, Geneva and Nairobi. Thanks to its position as UN city, Vienna has been able to further strengthen and develop its role as a hub for global encounters and the promotion of international understanding. In this context, an important role is played by cross-cutting issues and links between the topics addressed by the different UN entities and other Vienna-based internatio-nal organisations, in particular the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Today, the VIC is home to some 20 organisations, agencies and entities of the UN system, making it a centre of multilateral diplomacy of international renown.

After 40 years of operation, the VIC still retains its excellent functional qualities and has developed into the core of a new neighbourhood and the heart of “International Vienna“. With its impressive architecture and its striking towers, the VIC has also become a landmark of Vienna’s skyline.
