My social media world in college...
![Page 4: Central Washington University COM 226 presentation](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052907/558fbf251a28ab74488b45da/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
I was in college from 2000 to 2004.
My cell phone was this....
Facebook? Nope. That was only available for
students at Harvard and Ivy League
schools.
![Page 5: Central Washington University COM 226 presentation](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052907/558fbf251a28ab74488b45da/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
I listened to free music (illegally).
FTP was my Dropbox.
![Page 6: Central Washington University COM 226 presentation](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052907/558fbf251a28ab74488b45da/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
My idea of sharing photos... were getting doubles at Target
(I was 21 in this photo.)

Your phone...

You got Facebook....
...but you have plenty of other choices.

term view.”

“... We came across the word ‘twitter’ and it was just perfect. The definition was ‘a short burst of
inconsequential information,’ and ‘chirps from birds.’ And that was exactly what the product was. The whole
bird thing: bird chirps sound meaningless to us, but meaning is applied by other birds. The same is true of Twitter: a lot of messages can be seen as completely
useless and meaning less, but it’s entirely dependent on the recipient.”
- Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Feb. 2009

“Perhaps the most heartening observation from the Snapchat/Instagram phenomenon is that new social
behaviors can and will happen. For a time the door may have seemed closed. Yet Flickr sprung out of nowhere in 2002 when nobody else believed in consumer web.
Ten years later, it might be deja vu all over again.
- Posterous co-founder Garry Tan, on the social media use of the younger generation.

Ground rules in social media...
• Listen
• Engage
•Curate
• Adapt
![Page 26: Central Washington University COM 226 presentation](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052907/558fbf251a28ab74488b45da/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
• You are only still one person online.
• True privacy cannot be achieved online
• It’s OK to take a break.
• It’s not about you.
• Social media is, and will always be, a moving target.
• Social media is open ended. Experiment until something sticks. If something doesn’t work, drop it. (Well, unless you have to do it for class. )
