Dear Parents,

As we approach the end of the school year, the issue of parental requests for specific classroom teachers arises. Assigning students is a complex educational process that involves grade-level, special area, and support teachers; counselors; reading and math specialists; and the building principal. We have developed procedures that allow us to create a healthy, heterogeneous balance. These classrooms are formed with consideration given to a wide range of academic strengths, learning styles, and personal characteristics of both the teachers and the students.

Any concerns, unique characteristics, or circumstances that may prove significant in the placement of your child should be shared with the current homeroom teacher. This information will be included as part of the placement process. However, please know that specific teacher requests will not be granted.

The priority of our school community is to see that each student receives the best possible education. Our teaching staff is an excellent one that can meet the needs of all students. Your continued support in this endeavor is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Dr. Amy Kern

Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians of Central Elementary School Students: The safety of our students is one of our top priorities. To continue to strengthen our safety protocols, the District is implementing a visitor registration system. This system will allow us to more clearly and accurately identify visitors to our schools during the school day and to record when visitors enter and exit our buildings. Beginning April 2, 2018, visitors to Central Elementary School during the school day will need to present a government-issued identification (such as a driver’s license) to the secretary in the captured vestibule. The driver’s license will then be scanned and compared with information from several databases including the registered sex offender database. If there is a match, the secretary will alert the building administration who will assess and address the situation. If there is not a match, the building secretary will print a visitor’s badge that includes the visitor’s name, photo, reason for the visit and location of the visit. Upon completion of the visit, the visitor will need to return to the secretary to scan the barcode in order to exit. All visitors are required to exit the building through the main entrance unless otherwise directed by school personnel. The process of scanning and printing a visitor’s badge should take less than three minutes to complete; however, we do ask for patience from all visitors as this system is implemented. We recommend arriving on campus with enough time to complete the required scanning and check in. The visitor registration system does allow the buildings to pre-populate visitor badges in order to expedite arrivals when we are expecting groups of visitors/volunteers, such as when we host holiday parties. In order to pre-populate the visitor badges, we would need for visitors to have scanned their government issued identification (such as a driver’s license) prior to the event. As such, we would encourage parents who are anticipating arriving for larger events this spring, such as Kindergarten End-of-Year Celebration, Science Olympiad or Primary Science day, to visit the building at some point before the event to scan their identification. This process would expedite your badging process on the date of your spring event. Large events where family and friends are visiting only in the gym or cafeteria for a program, such as 4th Grade Wax Museum or 5th Grade Promotion Program, will not

Parents or guardians who are dropping off items for students or staff will not need to have a visitor’s badge but can just leave the items with the building secretary. Thank you, in advance, for your assistance as we implement these additional safety protocols. If you have any questions, please feel free to read our Frequently Asked Questions available on the District’s website at www.ht-sd.org or contact me at 412-492-6320 or [email protected]. Sincerely,
