We welcome students and their families to Central Public School where we are committed to providing the best education

possible for your child. As a learning community, we strive for the academic, social, and emotional success of our students. Our goal

is to not only educate our students for today, but also to create a strong foundation for students to build on as lifelong learners. Every

person in our school community is an integral part of the educational experience at Central Public School. Both School Council and

CHASA plans and implements important activities, fundraisers, and events. In addition, the parent groups through hard work and

dedication has provided valuable financial support to our school activities. Our strong partnership with the parents allows us to work

together to achieve common goals for the benefit of all students.

During the year, parents are invited to visit our school, to meet with teachers and to attend special programs. We invite you to

contact your child’s teachers at any time to discuss concerns. Teachers, in turn, will maintain regular communication. Your child’s

daily agenda or DOJO or Seesaw should be checked nightly for notes. Please feel free to write back to us in the agenda or message

the teacher through the Communication sites as well.

This handbook contains a great deal of information that you may wish to refer to during the coming school year. Please file it

in a safe place for reference. Should you have any questions about these or any other matters, please feel free to call Central School at

SCHOOL MOTTO: SCHOOL CALENDAR: Plans change for many over the year so we will only send home monthly calendars at the beginning of the month. We will also post it on Facebook and our school website. .

Central’s staff works diligently to provide the best education to meet your child’s needs and ability. Our Balanced School Day allows our students to have longer blocks of uninterrupted programming for language and math. Every classroom focuses on providing meaningful reading and writing opportunities during literacy classes. Children are given opportunities to use their oral French on a daily basis. The arts are flourishing. We have volunteers helping us provide extra programming. Every class has access to technology through our iPads, smartboards and our new smart tv’s. Our Kindergarten students spend learning time in the outdoors. Class work from grade one to six is a balance of teacher and student directed learning experiences. Our goal is to address the different learning styles of our students. Our curriculum follows the Ontario Curriculum guidelines and the French as a Second Language/French Immersion Grades 1 – 6 Ontario Curriculum. Central School offers an Early Learning Kindergarten through Grade 6 French Immersion Program. Students transition to Kirkland Lake District Composite School, a dual track school, offering both French Immersion and English from Grade 7 to 12. Our goal is to offer a strong French Immersion program and we schedule French Immersion classes as follows: Junior Kindergarten 100% French Language Instruction (after the initial immersion) Senior Kindergarten 100% French Language Instruction Grade 1 100% French Language Instruction Grade 2 100% French Language Instruction Grade 3 75% French Language Instruction Grade 4, 5 and 6 50% French Language Instruction Children are the only future of any people.

SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

CALLING THE SCHOOL

You may reach the secretary, Mrs. Dal Pai, daily from 8:30 a.m. until 11:50 and 12:50 until 4:00 p.m. by calling 567-4030. She can be very helpful. If you have a matter that deals with a specific teacher, please leave a message with Mrs. Dal Pai and the teacher will return your call as soon as possible. Please ask Mrs. Dal Pai to deliver only emergency messages to students. All personal arrangements should be made at home. If you reach the answering machine, please leave a message.

ATTENDANCE

Safe Arrival Program - We want to try to ensure that every child arrives safely at school. It is expected that parents will call the school between 8:15 and 8:50 a.m., or leave a message on the answering machine, the evening before or early morning if their children are going to be absent. If your child is away and we have received no word from you, our school secretary will call your home. Please help us to avoid making unnecessary calls by letting us know about absenteeism before the school day begins. Punctuality is important! Being late frequently is not a good training for life and being late disrupts classes.

Notes are required for: 1. leaving early 2. going to appointments during school hours 3. leaving the school property at noon 4. being picked up.

PAPERLESS COMMUNICATION

We are asking that families provide the school with email addresses so that communication from the school can be sent home electronically. Please ensure we have your up-to-date email address so that you are informed of school events. Thanks for helping us to reduce our environmental footprint. Please let us know if this is something you might have difficulty with.

VISITING THE SCHOOL

In order to let Mrs. Dal-pai know you have arrived, you must push the buzzer and wait to be let into the school. Safety and security of your children is our number one concern. Please, always check in at the office when visiting the school. This is School Board Policy to better protect Central Public School students. If you need to talk to your child, Mrs. Dal Pai will call him/her to the office. Families are never to be going directly to students’ classroom – it is a matter of safety, avoiding interrupting lessons, and protecting privacy of all students. If you are bringing something for your child, please leave it with Mrs. Dal Pai or the lunchtime monitorand either someone will deliver to the classroom or your child will come to the office and pickup.

PICKING UP STUDENTS

Please wait outside the school to meet your children at the end of the day. Please notify the school of your intentions either with a note to the teacher or a phone call to the office. Students are busy getting to the front door for pickups, the side door to walk and the 2 doors for busses and having more adults in the building becomes confusing and distracting for students. It also makes it harder to supervise and ensure all students’ safety. All walkers or students to be picked up, exit by the side door and through the gates. This as well is to eliminate confusion and congestion in the front entrance for the safety of all students. If you are picking up your children during the day, please wait at the office and the secretary will call your child up to the foyer.

SUPPORT YOUR CHILDREN AND THE SCHOOL

Always show your child that you respect education, the school and the values for which it stands. The staff will support your home values. Should you have concerns about any situations arising at school, please talk to staff members to get a complete picture.

COMMUNICATION AND HOMEWORK

All ELKP-6 teachers use electronic communication or agendas or bookbags with families (ie ClassDojo or Seesaw). Regular communication between school and home supports successful school routines. Homework usually consists of completing work not done during school time, or nightly reading routines. Exceptions to this are projects, and studying for tests. It is the child's responsibility to complete his/her assignments. If your child does not complete or have his/her assignments at school, you will receive a message or phone call indicating our concern. If you think that your child has too much homework, please contact the teacher to see how your child is using class time. The 10 minutes for each grade is a good rule of thumb, i.e. grade 1 - 10 minutes, grade 2 - 20 minutes, grade 6 - 60 minutes, etc. If you are finding French homework too difficult, please discuss your concern with your child’s teacher. Be sure your child learns to protect books by using zip-loc bags and a school bag.

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

Please be advised that we have video surveillance in parts of the school as well as the playground. This has been put into place to help protect personal property, as well as the safety and security of our students.

TEACHERS ON DUTY

There is at least two adults on duty from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in areas where the children are expected to be. While children are out at recesses, we have increased supervision to five staff members. **Children dropped off at school before there is a duty teacher will remain outside and are not supervised. **

FOR SAFETY’S SAKE CHILDREN MUST

Play safely with peers - cooperating and sharing equipment Keep away from the mud and water at the bottom of the hill. Play safe games – No piggy back, play fighting, rolling down the hill, or jumping off the snow hills Stay off play structures if they are too slippery, snowy or icy. Wear running shoes or closed toed shoes when on the playground climbing structures. Ride only one way on the glider, if someone else is waiting. Only one person is on the glider at a time. Go down the slides, one at a time and on your bottoms. Do not climb “up” the slide. Only have one person at a time on a swing. Swings may be pushed, BUT NOT TWISTED, TWIRLED OR SWUNG

SIDEWAYS. Do not jump off the swings. Stay away from the gas meter by the school.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS

These are days when children have a day off but teachers work either at the school or attend workshops. Notice of these days is given at the beginning of each school year on the calendar, as well as in monthly calendars throughout the year. This helps families to plan ahead.

CELL PHONE POLICIES: From Kindergarten to Grade 6 there is no need to have a cell phone at school. If your child needs to contact home and it is necessary, we will allow them to use the school phones. If your child wants to have a phone on the school bus, they can put it in their backpacks once they arrive at school and take it out once they are on the bus. This rule is for the safety of all. Mrs. Bowes will remind students to leave it in their backpacks and if they are not able to follow the rules, we will keep it at the office until a parent can pick it up.

LUNCH RULES

Only send the amount of food your child can eat so there is no giving away, throwing away or trading of food. Send a thermos, drinking box or plastic container – NO GLASS BOTTLES. Notes are required for students to leave during lunch hour – this includes children who bike to school. Pack lunches and snacks in different bags than school books to avoid spilling, preferably 2 bags (1 snack and 1 lunch) No pop or carbonated beverages are allowed for lunches. Milk is available to purchase at school. A note will be sent home every couple of months. Milk must be purchased in

advance (preferably through our on-line School Cash program). Pizza slices will be sold on Fridays. They must also be purchased in advance.

Microwaves: Microwaves will be available in the classrooms on a daily basis. Please be considerate and only send food to be warmed up in the microwave, not dinners that take a long period of time or soup that could burn children. Things such as packaged noodles and frozen dinners take too long to heat up and monopolize the microwaves and therefore do not allow all students to warm their lunch items.

MORNING SNACK

Morning snack occurs from 10:30-10:50. During morning snack time, students are encouraged to make healthy eating choices (i.e. yogurt, fruit, veggies). Healthier snacks will help students maintain their energy and focus until the 12:50 lunch time. Please remind your child to save deserts for the afternoon lunch time, after they have eaten their lunch.

PLAY TIME

At 10:50 and 1:10 p.m., ALL students must go outside, including ELKP students. Children in ELKP to Grade 1 play at the top of the hill. Grade 2 to 6 students play at the bottom of the hill. On rainy or cold days, children will be supervised in their classrooms.

LOST AND FOUND

Write names on all school bags, containers, clothing, sports equipment, etc. that your child brings to school. You and your child should check the “Lost and Found” regularly. It is usually over-flowing with good clothing. Clothing left in lost and found for extended periods of time are donated to needy families.

SHOES

Because of the sand and mud in our playground, outdoor shoes worn to school must be changed to a pair of indoor shoes when reaching the classroom. Children must have running shoes with light coloured soles for Physical Education. Make sure they are labelled and checked regularly for sizing. Outdoor shoes should also be runners, so your children can play safely on the playground equipment.

BICYCLES / SKATING BOARDS / ROLLER BLADES

Any bicycles brought to school must be locked to the fence outside the gates upon arrival. The school does not take any responsibility for bicycles or helmets. Bicycles may not be ridden on school property. If your child brings a bike, he/she is expected to remain at school all day unless a note is sent. Skate boards and rollerblades are not allowed on school property during the school day.

FIELD TRIPS

During the year, teachers often plan class excursions in our community or surrounding areas. Letters are sent home to request permission from families anytime children are involved in a trip outside of our town. All pupils who are well mannered, respectful, follow rules, and complete their work throughout the year are invited to go on excursions.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parent volunteers are required for the following activities. special events (i.e. field trips, play days) classroom helpers Home and School Association events - barbeques, fundraising

Your assistance is always greatly appreciated. Please contact Mrs. Dal Pai if you can help. A volunteer sign- up sheet is sent home in September. We will also send a volunteer letter home. All volunteers must provide proof of an updated Vunerable Sector Check conducted by the OPP. The VSC must be updated once a year.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

In September, parents who wish to be members of the School Advisory Council, must complete a nomination form and return it to school. School Council acts in an advisory capacity to the school principal. Meetings are scheduled, four times a year, on the most convenient evening for the members.

CENTRAL HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION (CHASA)

All parents who have children attending this school are welcome to belong to this association. This active group raises money so our school can have new outside equipment, exciting school trips, special treats, and other extras, not funded by DSBONE. Meetings are usually held once a month on the most convenient evening for its members.

FUNDRAISING

Fundraising is an ongoing challenge for schools. Throughout the year, school families are asked to support our fundraising endeavours by buying and selling items such as cheese at Christmas. We are always looking for new fundraisers, so please share any ideas that you have. All proceeds raised through fundraising directly benefits the children of our school (field trips, special events). Please do your best to support our fundraising efforts. No child will be treated differently if they are unable to fundraise - all children will ALWAYS have the same opportunities, regardless of their family’s fundraising.

SNACK PROGRAM

Central Public School will be providing healthy snacks on Mondays and Wednesdays for all students, thanks to our volunteer snack helpers. Thanks also to Mrs. Susan Brown for planning and shopping for our Snack Program. Donations were received from Red Cross, Breakfast for Learning and Central Home and School Association. Volunteers are welcome!

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation to and from school is provided to eligible students as a privilege and not a right. All Kindergarten students are bussed, but distance from the school and grade level determines which other students are bussed. Please review the Bus Regulations that will be emailed to you, with your child. PLEASE DO NOT SEND NOTES WITH YOUR CHILD OR CALL THE SCHOOL ASKING THAT YOUR CHILD TAKE SOME BUS OTHER THAN HIS/HER REGULAR BUS FOR A NIGHT. Please make sure that your child clearly understands how he/she is getting home before 8:50 a.m. Staff cannot give last minute messages to students.

Bus drivers of Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are required to keep any child on the bus if no adult is visible at the drop-off location. In this event, the child will be driven back to the school at the end of the bus route. If this happens, parents or guardians should call the school to make arrangements to pick up their children. If you are concerned that you have missed the "drop off", the whereabouts of your child can usually be established by calling Stock Bus Company at 705-567-3105.

BUS REPORTS

Should your child misbehave on the bus, you will receive a report through the school from the bus driver. The first infraction is a warning. The second report could be a three day bus suspension or discretion of the principal. Report number “three” could be that the child is off the bus for 8 school days. Should a fourth bus report be received, your child could be off the bus indefinitely.

PARKING

Our parking lot is very busy at the end of the day. Please park safely and in a spot, so that the drive through area is not congested. We have had a sidewalk installed on the fence side of the parking lot and it is never to be parked on - this is for our walking students. There is also parking available in the bus turn around that is located 2 driveways to the left of the school, behind the building. However, please do not enter or exit this area when buses are loading / unloading (8:25-8:50, 3:00-3:30). As always, please watch for pedestrians when using the parking lot.

HEAD LICE

DSBONE now has a Pediculosis (Head Lice) Policy requiring students to be “nit free” before returning to school. If head lice/nits are found on a student, all families with children in that class will receive a notice so they can check their children. Children are allowed to return to school only after receiving treatment and being deemed lice and nit free.

HEALTH SERVICES AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Parents may call the Timiskaming Health Unit at 705-567-9355 with any questions as to the school nurse program or services offered. A school nurse no longer comes to the school on a regular basis, however, the THU arranges the necessary inoculations for our students. We also have an Influenza clinic at school. A dental hygienist checks specific grades of younger students for tooth decay. When children are enrolled, parents are asked if there are any special health problems and this is included in the child's student records. Allergies are shared with our Snack Program volunteers. Please, be sure we are aware.

ILLNESS AND INJURY

If your child is ill while at school there is little that we can do for him/her. The secretary will contact the family. Please ensure that your emergency phone numbers are kept up to date. In cases of minor cuts and scrapes, we will apply first aid and/or a "magic" ice pack. If we suspect an injury of a more severe nature, we will try to contact a parent to arrange transportation to the Emergency Department at the hospital. In an emergency, an ambulance will be called.

ORAL MEDICATION

Medication is the parent’s responsibility. The school will assist if the following procedures have been followed: a) A medication form has been completed by the parent or Doctor (forms available in office). b) The medication arrives at school in the original pharmacy container with instructions.

SPECIAL SERVICES

Parents may contact Timiskaming Health Unit at 705-567-9355 (medical concerns), North Eastern Ontario Family and Children Services at 705-568-5437 (psychological services), Community Care Access at 705-567-2222 (speech/language and occupational therapy providers) and Timiskaming Hearing Clinic at 705-567-1115 (hearing and auditory processing testing). Parents should take their children for regular eye examinations. Accessing these services is the responsibility of parents.

COMMUNICATION AND REPORTING

If you sense any learning difficulties affecting your child, please contact the appropriate teacher before speaking to the principal. The teachers will keep you well informed of your child’s progress. Formal report cards will be sent home twice a year. An interim report will go home in mid-November. Our scheduled student led conferences are important communication opportunities as well.

.CENTRAL PUBLIC SCHOOL BEHAVIOUR CODE

At Central Public School, we nurture the love of learning in English and French to inspire success, opportunity and personal growth.

District School Board O.N.E. has developed a Code of Conduct (Policy 2.1.6) and Central Public School will follow its guidelines. Appropriate Dress: Students are expected to dress in a manner appropriate to the school environment. Students are expected to dress appropriately for serious classroom work. If students are dressed inappropriately, they will be required to change into appropriate clothing. Respect for Authority: Students are expected to comply with the rules of the school and with the expectations of all school personnel. The rules, which have been established under the Education Act, are not intended to be difficult for students to follow. They are grounded in respect for self and for others and have been endorsed by teachers, parents, and peers. All staff and students deserve the right to be free from verbal and physical abuse. If behaviour does not improve, students will receive a consequence as determined by the school’s policy. Bus Regulations: Students are expected to comply with the school bus rules which are designed to ensure the safety of all students traveling to and from school. Inappropriate behaviour on the school bus may result in loss of bus privileges, as per the Tri-Board Transportation Policy and school discipline procedures. Transportation for Field Trips: If on a school trip of any kind or duration and student behaviour is inappropriate, parents will be notified and the student will be sent home. Parents will be required to pay for return transportation. Further consequences are possible, pending a full report from the teacher supervisor.

Respect for Property: Students are expected to treat all school property with respect at all times. Students who destroy, deface or lose school property will be required to pay the cost of repair or replacement. At the discretion of the principal other measures may be taken. Punctuality and Attendance Students are expected to attend and be on time for all classes and school activities in order to be successful. Parents and students should be aware of school protocols, and the Safe Arrival Policy. If students have to leave the school during the day, they will need a note signed by a parent/guardian to excuse attendance from school (eg. For a dental appointment). If a student is seriously ill, parents will be notified and asked to pick up their child. When absent from school, the school must be notified, by calling the school or sending a note for the office with a sibling. Chronic truancy may result in a referral to the Board’s Attendance Officer, Mrs. Fuller, and/or more related consequences. Preparation for Classes Students are expected to prepare for each class; to have the materials necessary in order to ensure success in academic studies. Academic Honesty Students are expected to follow the Growing Success Policy (2.1.34) at all times. Consequences for plagiarism or cheating will be determined following the Growing Success Policy (2.1.34). Conduct Off School Property: Behaviour off school property and outside the school day can negatively affect the learning environment and student safety in the school. Where there is evidence of this, the school principal will intervene as if the inappropriate behaviour was initiated in the school setting.

POSSIBLE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS for BEHAVIOUR INFRACTIONS OF ANY KIND: Interview: • With teacher, or Principal. May be informal or formal, depending upon the circumstances. Purpose may be to enlighten, educate, or warn the individual concerned. Parental Involvement: • May take the form of a phone call, an interview or a letter home. Detention: • The student may be asked to compensate through thinking about their behaviours, by serving an prescribed amount of time at the office or in their classroom. Removal of Privileges: • The consequence involves the removal of services/opportunities provided by the school or board, including bus transportation, and extra-curricular activities. Restrictions: • May take the form of limitations relating to the use of school equipment, access to specific areas of the school premises, interactions with specific students, or participation in school events. Controlled Supervised Timetable (eg., in-school suspension) • Is a measure by which a student is assigned to a specified area, under supervision, for a designated period of time. Suspension: • Is the removal of the student from the school premises for a period of time - could be between 1 and 20 days, or as modified upon appeal as per the DSBONE Suspension and Expulsion policies. Note: The principal may move directly to suspension should the seriousness of an incident require this sanction. Withdrawal from School: • Such action is normally taken after consultation with parents and/or Special Education staff.

Police Involvement: • May involve the laying of charges as appropriate. Expulsion / Exclusion: •In extreme cases, the Principal, in consultation with the appropriate Supervisory Officer, and the Board Lawyer, may recommend/impose an expulsion of a student from school or school-related activities for a minimum period of time of twenty-one (21) days as per the District School Board Ontario North East Suspension and Expulsion policies.

PROCEDURES FOR DEALING WITH VIOLENT INCIDENTS These factors will be taken into account when considering responses to violent incidents: - the type of incident - all the facts, circumstances and individuals involved - the degree of harm caused to the victim and/or the school community - the ages of the individuals involved - the number of incidents an individual is involved in.

- the underlying causes or contributing factors of the violence, for example, racism, sexism, homophobia, sexual assault, domestic violence, drugs and gangs - the consequences for the perpetrator (including loss of freedom, exclusion from special events, exclusion from the regular classroom, suspension, restitution as well as participation in rehabilitation programs which may involve other agencies) should be commensurate with the incident and be beneficial to all involved.

Consequences for violent incidents may involve referral to Police Services, Child and Family Services or other agency support as appropriate and in accordance with the Board Violence Prevention Policy (Policy 2.1.7).

TIPS TO HELP PARENTS OF FRENCH IMMERSION STUDENTS

1) Be supportive of the teachers, the school, the principal and your child’s program. Discuss concerns with your child’s teacher.

2) If your child is eager to speak French at home, be encouraging, but otherwise don’t force your child to do so. 3) Only correct your child in expression or pronunciation if you are French speaking. 4) Remember that your child’s learning capacity is vast. 5) Expose your child to French television programs. 6) Take children to a French bookstore and to the library for books and music. 7) Take advantage of local events that increase your child’s exposure to French language and culture. 8) Be proud of, and celebrate your child’s successes.

SOME HINTS FOR PARENTS OF EARLY LEARNING KINDERGARTEN

1) Rest is very important so please ensure a reasonable bedtime. 2) A nourishing breakfast starts the day off well. 3) Stress nutrition with your child and provide him/her with snacks of fruit and vegetables. It is recommended that

Junior and Senior Kindergarten students carry their snacks in a backpack so their hands are free. 4) Help your child to understand that "No" means NO. Children need to be able to express this to those around them,

respectfully, as well as readily accept it from others, respectfully. 5) Encourage self reliance in dress, speech and actions. Dressing your child in clothing he/she can manage by

him/herself is a great help to the school. Practice with zippers, boots, shoelaces, etc. Slip-on or Velcro closure shoes are helpful.

6) Set aside a special time to discuss the events of the school day. A display area at home to display “treasures” will show you are interested in your child’s accomplishments.

7) Join the town library. 8) Always speak positively about the school, the staff and your child’s classmates.
