My God, my Father. Grant me the grace to approach this table with humble repentance and ardent desire in Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant me to receive this holy sacrament with firm faith in thy word. GOD SPEAKS TO US

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

* RESPONSIVE PSALM (p. 564) Psalm 116:8-14 "Thanksgiving for Recovery from Illness"

Leader: For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. Congregation: I walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I kept my faith, even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”; I said in my consternation, “Everyone is a liar.”

What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

*NEW TESTAMENT READING (p. 173) 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 "The Institution of the Lord’s Supper"

23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

SOLO: O For a Heart to Praise My God Edwin Childs

Christina Austin, soprano

O for a heart to praise my God, A heart from sin set free,

A heart that always feels your blood So freely shed for me.

A heart, resigned, submissive, meek, My great Redeemer’s throne,

Where only Christ is heard to speak, Where Jesus reigns alone.

A heart in every thought renewed, And full of love divine;

Perfect and right and pure and good, A copy, Lord, of Yours.

O for a humble, contrite heart, Believing, true and clean,

Which neither life nor death can part From Him Who dwells within.

Your nature, gracious Lord, impart; Come quickly from above;

Upon my heart write Your new name, Your new best name of Love. – Charles Wesley

GOSPEL READING (p. 99) John 7:14-24 "Jesus teaches" 14 About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple

and began to teach. 15 The Jews were astonished at it, saying, “How

does this man have such learning, when he has never been

taught?” 16 Then Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine

but his who sent me. 17 Anyone who resolves to do the will of God

will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am

speaking on my own. 18 Those who speak on their own seek their

8

own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is

true, and there is nothing false in him.

19 “Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law.

Why are you looking for an opportunity to kill me?” 20 The crowd

answered, “You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?” 21 Jesus

answered them, “I performed one work, and all of you are

astonished. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (it is, of course, not

from Moses, but from the patriarchs), and you circumcise a man on

the sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath in

order that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with

me because I healed a man’s whole body on the sabbath? 24 Do not

judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY COMMUNION

THE INVITATION THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty; creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING & THE LORD’S PRAYER

We pray as Christ taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, And the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Sermon Notes: "The Credentials of Jesus" Text: John 7:14-24

PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS Eileen Reynolds Linda Pearson Marie Davies

Word of the Day: “Lord’s Supper/eucharist/communion” in the breaking and eating of the bread and pouring and drinking of the cup with thanksgiving to God, Christ’s saving life, death, and resurrection are remembered and proclaimed; his real presence and grace for the forgiveness of sins and the renewal of life are received and celebrated; and the church is strengthened for its mission in the world in the confident hope of Christ’s coming again and of the consummation of his saving work. “Lord’s Supper” emphasizes that Jesus Christ is the host who invites all to his table and gives himself to all who put their trust in him. “Communion” expresses the fact that in this meal we are repeatedly given new life in communion with God and each other through Christ in the power of the Spirit. The name “eucharist” (thanksgiving) declares that in this celebration the church gives thanks in the Spirit to God for God’s sacrificial love and great goodness to us in Jesus Christ.
