FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

This report is released as the agency is about to celebrate the third anniversary of our merger - which we will do

on October 15, 2013. Looking back, I am impressed by the foresight of board members who had the wisdom to identify the need for a partnership and the courage to chart a bold course for the future. It was not easy. Both partner organizations were created by the communities they serve, and a move-ment toward merger involved a certain de-gree of risk. Now, on the third anniversary of the merger, I believe we can say with confi-dence that the risk was worth it. The agency just celebrated its best year ever – more peo-ple were served with higher quality care than ever in our combined his-tory. And…we did this in a financial-ly strong and responsible way.

This success could not have come at a better time. Lying ahead of us are profound changes in healthcare – some occasioned by the Afford-able Care Act and others the natural consequence of a complex industry. Fortunately we have a team of skilled professionals – clinicians, educators, office support and administration – who are charged and ready to move ahead. Our ship has the right crew to see us through uncharted waters, and we have the proper resources as well.

The timing of the merger was ideal for another reason. The downturn in the economy has not fully rebound-ed. The cost of healthcare continues to rise. Our agency is seeing more people in need of intense care who have no health insurance or who are underinsured. In particular, we see many come to us for assistance who have spent nearly their entire savings seeking treatment for disease

and whose insurance – if they have it at all - has an alarmingly high deduct-ible. We see more children born into stressed families – families without stable housing, reliable income or prepared parents. We see an increase in our el-derly citizens without family supports who suf-fer from dementia or ad-

vancing chronic disease.

We believe that we steadied our ship just as these waves of need were beginning to rise. With the support of this community, we intend to be there in response to the emerging health and social support needs of the Lakes Region. Each year at this time, I am reminded that this orga-nization belongs to you, to the com-munity. We are all stewards of this important trust, and we hope we can rely on you to stay with us as we move into the future.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

A s I complete my term as President, I want to thank my fellow Board members for their commitment to

the agency and for the contribution of their various talents and countless hours in overseeing agency matters. The diversity and competency of the Board contributes a great deal to the agency’s success. I also want to express the entire Board’s gratitude for the support Central New Hampshire VNA & Hospice receives from its donors, volunteers and the communities which it serves.

The agency exper-ienced a successful year, both fiscally and with respect to measures of the quality of care. The result of surveys on quality of care and patient satisfaction for home health agencies are now required by the federal government to be posted on-line and made available to the public, for comparison. It is satisfying to know that the overall metrics scores received by CNHVNAH in those surveys rank it in the upper tier of similar sized agencies located within New Hampshire, and even more so on a national scale.

Fiscally, the agency, like other health care providers, faces challenges both from the continuing downward trend

in Medicare reimbursement rates, compounded further by a decrease in funding resulting from the federal sequester, which continues in effect. In spite of these challenges, the agency experienced positive results from operations and stands on firm financial footing. This was one of the results hoped for from the merger of our constituent agencies in 2010 and is an indicator of the efficiencies of scale

resulting from that merger.

Looking forward, the agency will face new chal-lenges from implemen-tation of the Affordable Care Act, which is un-derway now and will ac-celerate in 2014. Given the challenges posed by changes in the way in which health care is both delivered and funded, it

is gratifying to know that the agency stands on such firm ground, both fis-cally and with respect to its manage-ment.

With your continued support, Central New Hampshire VNA & Hospice can successfully face whatever challenges result from the changes ahead and continue in its mission to provide the highest quality of care and comfort to area residents.

Thank you,

John Giere
