MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

July, 2015

Fellow Golden Boys,

On behalf of the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys (CLNGB) Board of Directors and Interest Group

Leaders, I am pleased to bring you the Membership Booklet for the 2015-2016 GB fiscal year, our 14th

year as a club. Please take the time to read and understand this booklet as it will answer many questions

you may have regarding our Club.

The booklet includes our statement of purpose, leader contact information, bylaws, policies and

guidelines, information about our website, and an overview of activities available to members. The

booklet does not include a membership directory, as that list is updated monthly and resides on our web

site.

If you are a new member of the Club – welcome!! We are a men’s social club dedicated to activities that

promote the enjoyment of life. With nearly 500 members, we participate in about 25+ Interest Groups

(IGs), which are the mainstay of the Club. Our IGs are groups of men, led by volunteers, who share and

pursue similar interests. The IG descriptions should help you visualize the many opportunities available to

share a fun-filled life. If you’ve an interest to start a new IG, The Board of Directors will support your

initiative. Please seize the opportunity to embrace the volunteer spirit of the organization as this is your

Club; your participation will contribute to making the Golden Boys a life-enhancing experience.

Additionally, as you gain experience and understanding of our Club and its members, we ask that you

consider to get involved and step up into a leadership position – be that of running or assisting one of our

IGs or supporting the Club as a whole as a member of the Board of Directors. Without this individual

leadership, our Club wouldn’t be the vibrant organization it is today.

Our Golden Boy Monthly Breakfast and Meeting is held on the second Friday of each month at the Finish

Line Restaurant located in George Pappas’ Victory Lanes. Breakfast starts around 7:30 am; followed

immediately by our Business meeting starting at 9:00 AM. Therefore, plan on coming early to socialize

and enjoy breakfast before the meeting begins. Typically 125 - 150 members attend, so it’s a great

opportunity to meet others, have fun, and find out what’s going on.

I know you will treasure your club membership as much as I. Therefore, take every opportunity to get

involved! Carl Lombardo

The Central Lake Norman Golden Boys was started as an informal men’s social club in 2002.

Most of the men in the original small group who started the Club were recent retirees who had

relocated to this area. They wanted to meet new people, make new friends and organize fun

activities. The vitality of the Club continues to center around the Interest Groups led by volunteer

Interest Group and special event leaders. At this writing we have approximately 500 members in

the Club and about 33 interest groups. The annual business year runs from June 1 to May 31.

Dues are $25 for the 2014 – 2015 fiscal year, $20 for renewing members if paid by June 1st.

The Golden Boys was formed as a “fun” club, not a service club. That style continues today.

We do not promote or support business, commercial, religious or educational organizations,

political parties or positions, service clubs or charities, as a club. However, many members are

involved in and financially support charitable and service organizations of their choice, as

individuals.

We do most of our communicating on the Internet. We encourage you to become registered at

our secure Yahoo website so you will be fully informed about planned events. There two ways

website members can get electronic event notices: the default option is to get individual event

notices one email at a time, with the "Daily Digest" an option (must be selected) that will

consolidate all the notices for the day.

Finally, our tradition is regular turnover in leadership positions. We invite you to consider

volunteering as a Board member, an Interest Group or special event leader.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To provide an organization that allows for networking among men with similar interests and

circumstances

To provide an opportunity for men new to the area to meet local residents and become

assimilated into the area through activities of common interest

To share experiences with people you enjoy spending time with in activities you enjoy

To help make the Central Lake Norman area a better place because we are here

If a man does not make new acquaintances as he advances through life, he will soon find himself

alone. A man should keep his friendships in constant repair.

CLUB COMMUNICATIONS AND THE INTERNET

In addition to the monthly breakfast meeting, the Club uses the Internet extensively for

communicating to its members. There are several aspects to these communications:

A. The monthly newsletter and important communications which need to reach all members

are sent by e-mail using the e-mail addresses which are part of the member profile/contact

information in the GB Master Membership Directory. To respect the privacy of our members

we do not send out personal emails to the entire membership. Please contact the Golden Boys

Communications Director at [email protected] if you believe that you have a

non-personal email that needs to be sent to all Club members.

B. Interest Group Leaders communicate with their group members via their own e-mail

lists or by phone.

C. The Club currently maintains three web sites for communication purposes.

(1) There is a Yahoo Group site that is used to maintain our Club event calendar and

to maintain a photo directory of all Golden Boy members. It is located at this link

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CLNGB/. The site is a rich storehouse of information for

members, and all members with an email address in the GB Master Membership

Directory can gain access to the site by contacting the Communications Director

[email protected]. Once registered at the site the member can select

one of two ways to get electronic event notices: the default option is to get individual.

event notices one email at a time, or with the "Daily Digest" option (must be selected)

that will consolidate all the notices for the day.

(2) The Club uses a web site

http://groupspaces.com/CentralLakeNormanGoldenBoys/ to send out emails to the entire

membership. The site also has the capability of sending out emails to individual interest

groups if the interest group leader chooses to use the capability. Any Golden Boy in

good standing can also register at the site and access the membership directory and

other content available there.

(3) The Club also uses a “One Drive” web storage to provide access to commonly

sought after club documents such as newsletters, membership booklets, hard copy

calendar files, etc. Here are links that will take you to the most asked for documents.

i Newsletters

ii Club Files

iii Calendars

iv Interest Group Folders

v Membership Files

If your e-mail address changes:

(1) You will want to advise the Membership Chairman and the leaders of Interest Groups in

which you participate, so you stay in the communications loops.

(2) The Membership Chairman will then notify the Communications Director of your new

e-mail address and request that he update your address on the GB communications email

web site. This will ensure that you will continue to receive all member blast e-mails,

including the monthly newsletter.

(3) Only the registered member can change his profile on the Yahoo web site. You will need

to log in at this link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CLNGB/ once logged in, change your

member profile which contains your preferred email address.

If your personal profile information changes: Please provide the Club

Membership Chairman all changes to your address, phone, marital

status, etc.

CLUB MEMBER DIRECTORY POLICY

The Club Member Directory is proprietary and is intended solely for internal CLNGB

Club use. Any external or commercial use of the Directory is strictly prohibited to protect

the privacy of our members and violation of this policy may result in dismissal from the

Club.

The Directory is posted on the web site under Files, and is updated monthly.

ACTIVITIES

BREAKFAST / BUSINESS MEETING

The monthly breakfast and business meeting is scheduled for the second Friday of the month. The

business meeting starts at 9 a.m. Most members arrive around 8 AM for the buffet breakfast and small

talk. The location is the Finish Line restaurant near I-77 Exit 36. The current cost of breakfast is $7.50

(tip is to be left on table after the meeting). Adult male guests are welcome. There are sign-up sheets for

Interest Group and excursion events in the room behind the meeting area.

LOGO CLOTHING

Central Lake Norman Golden Boys logo golf shirts, sweatshirts, tee shirts, jackets, caps and boat flags are

available for purchase from the Club, and can be ordered through Chuck Kaiser.

MAJOR CLUB-WIDE PARTIES

From year to year, the Club organizes various special parties for the membership. In past years these

have included parties in the fall and during winter holidays. In the spring, the Boating Interest Group

(‘IG’) organizes a Progressive Dinner by Boat. In late summer, the Boating IG also organizes a fun

Island Beach Party on Lake Norman.

INTEREST GROUPS Interest Groups are the core of the membership activity of the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys.

Members of the Club decide which groups they wish to join. There is no limit on how many groups

members may join. Each group operates its own activities, some are regular weekly or monthly and some

occur as single events. Some interest group activities include spouses and some do not. It’s up to each

member to initiate his participation in the groups.

Announcements of Interest Group activities can be made in any of five ways:

1. Calendar on GB Web site

2. E-mail notices to GB members signed onto Web site

3. Distribution of printed calendar at monthly meetings

4. Announcements by Interest Group Leaders at monthly meetings

5. Interest Group e-mails to members who register with Interest Groups that maintain specific IG mailing

lists.

Many Interest Groups request or require that people preregister. There are several ways to sign up:

1. Some activities can be registered for at the monthly breakfast meeting

2. E-mail announcements to the membership about the activity include Group or activity leader names

and addresses to which members can respond by e-mail or phone.

3. In cases where a fee is required, sending a check to the Treasurer is the acceptable method of

registration. Preregistration is required because of physical constraints on the activity location or the need

to arrange for food and beverage service.

Individual Interest Groups Include:

BOATING

The boating group organizes boating related activities. Typical activities include a raft-up followed by a

catered dinner outside, an island picnic, monthly full-moon restaurant/cruise/raft-ups, fall color cruise,

GUIDELINES FOR ATTENDANCE AT

GOLDEN BOY EVENTS

PURPOSE: It is the purpose of this document to provide guidelines to the Interest Group Leaders,

Interest Group members, and special event planners of the Golden Boys for determining attendance in

Interest Group and Club wide activities.

PHILOSOPHY: The Golden Boys Club is a men’s membership social club designed for networking

among men with similar interests and circumstances. As such, Club members are to be given first priority

to attend all Club sponsored events. All others, including wives/significant others and a member’s guest,

may be included on a case by case basis if circumstances require their attendance for the success of the

interest group activity or Club wide event. Interest group activities and Club wide events are not open to

the general public.

The members of each Interest Group, or the steering committee members for Club wide interest group

activities such as Adventures, Boating, Excursions, First Thursday Dinners, and Retirement Life (interest

groups with potential Club wide participation) may determine if attendance by wives/significant others

and member guests is appropriate for the activity in question. The Board has the ultimate responsibility

for determining who may attend Interest Group activities, if necessary, to maintain consistency across

interest groups under the Club’s Statement of Purpose, Bylaws, and Policies.

The Board of the Club may determine, if necessary, the appropriateness of inviting wives/significant

others and member guests to Club wide, non interest group activities to be consistent with the Club’s

Statement of Purpose, Bylaws, and Policies.

GUIDELINES:

Wives/Significant Others: In making an invitation to a member’s wife/significant other to attend an

Interest Group activity or Club wide event the following should be considered:

- Are they needed or wanted as partners for a specific activity?

- Is the Club member in attendance?

- Does the event require attendance that is greater than what members alone normally provide?

Southenders/Catawbans: In making an invitation for the participation by Southenders and Catawbans in

interest group activities and Club wide events the following should be considered:

- Do the Southenders and Catawbans interest groups have a designated leader and share an activity with a

similar Golden Boy interest group?

- Is it a joint event sponsored by the Boards of the Golden Boys and either the Southenders, Catawbans,

or both?

- Will the three clubs communicate the activity or event specifics only to their own members?

- Are the attendees of these events a member or member and wife of one of the three clubs?

- Is one Club designated as the host and organizing club with the event payments made to the Treasurer of

the host club (Current policy to be deleted)?

Guests: In making an invitation to member guests to attend an interest group activity or a Club wide

event the following should be considered:

- Is the guest a speaker or provide some expertise that is otherwise not available from within the Club?

- Does the guest limit the attendance by Club members and wives, if they are invited?

- Do they reside outside of the Lake Norman area as required by these guidelines?

Activity No Shows, Fixed Costs and Refunds

GUIDELINES:

In all circumstances, members shall notify an activity leader as soon as possible of a cancellation. This

courtesy will prevent inconveniencing other members.

If an activity has a fixed cost to be shared by participants, the activity leader should set a payment date

well before the event date. At the discretion of the activity leader, payments shall be sent to the CLNGB

Post Office Box or as the activity leader directs. Full refunds will be made to members cancelling prior to

the payment date. Refunds requested after the payment date will usually only be made after event

expenses are fully paid and will be made from any money remaining on a pro rata basis among those

requesting refunds.

Members do not have a reservation for an event until full payment is received. If an event has a

maximum reservation number, reservations will be in the order of payment receipt. An activity leader, at

his discretion, may maintain a waiting list which will also be populated in the order of payment receipt.

Refunds to those wait listed will be made when it becomes apparent to the activity leader that the wait

listed member(s) cannot be added to the list of attendees.

Refunds requested because of an inability to attend an event due to the rescheduling of the event to an

alternate date, which date was communicated prior to the payment date, will be made only if there is no

financial loss to the club arising from the refunds.
