History of Valentine’s Day By: Izzie Wilson

Valentine’s Day occurs every February 14. Across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the history of Valentine’s Day, from the ancient Roman ritual of Lupercalia that welcomed spring to the card-giving customs of Victorian England.

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of ro-mance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church rec-ognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Still others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.

Spending big on Valentine’s Day

With 181.9 million planning to buy a gift in 2020, it may not surprise you that February 14th is big business. Americans will spend roughly $19.2 billion on gifts this year, each gift averaging $110.

Where that money is spent and on whom varies widely. Girlfriends and wives luck out on Valentine’s, with the average girlfriend gifted a present worth $126 and the average wife’s gift costing $122. These values are more than dou-ble the average amount spent on husbands ($56) or boyfriends ($51).

Presidents’ day is honored on the third Monday of every February, the day was originally designed to honor George Washington's Birthday, February 22, 1732. The holiday was popularly recognized as honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The day is sometimes under-stood as the birthdays and lives of all United States Presidents. The third Monday in February is a federal holiday, meaning that federal employees get the day off and federal offices are closed. Presidents’ Day was originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington. The holiday became popularly known as Presidents' day after it was moved as part of 1971's Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three day weekends for the na-tion's workers. After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, they started celebrating his birth-day on February 12. Nine states observe Washington's birthday alone on the third Monday of February. There are 24 states that observe Presidents’ Day generally, Nine states don't observe any form of the holiday. Only Alabama officially sets aside the day to honor Washington. To this day, Presidents’ Day is a day to honor all Presidents.

Crush Cans By: Whitney Wilson and Maya Parker

Did you get a crush can? We raise money by selling crush cans for Mr. Wright’s kids so they can go to the Miners game. First, I interviewed Nevaeh Turner who said she didn’t get a crush, but her favorite flavor is grape. She said she didn’t buy one either. Next, I interviewed Jayden Bonner, she did not get a crush can either. Her favorite flavor is strawberry. She also didn’t buy a crush can. Katelyn Sileven, was next and she didn't

get a crush can and her favorite flavor is orange. Katelyn was also one of the many that did-n’t buy a crush can.

Makaiden, Izzie, and Nicole all got a crush can. Izzie said her crush can was from Ni-cole and she bought Nicole’s crush can. Makaiden got her crush can from Elijah, but did not buy one for anyone else. Aleah Russell got a crush can from Keegan Bowers and she bought one for him.

Next, I interviewed Mr. Cass, and he got a crush can. He said they give out crush cans so nobody feels left out or alone. Next, I interviewed Mrs. McPhail, and she thinks that it's fun and exciting to raise money for Mr. Wright's kids so they can go have fun watching the Miners game. What do you think about crush cans?

TikTok

By: Bailey Neibch and Cayden Riddle

TikTok started in China. There are over 800 million active users worldwide and over 1.5 bil-lion downloads on the app store and google play. We asked a couple of CJHS students if they are a “watcher or a maker.” Callie Dawson, Sarah Mitchell, Jayda Burns, Shealynn Rose, Ethan Odam, and Aleah Russell are all watchers. Silas Ware, Morgan Walters, Hayden Minton, and Annabelle Hopkins said they are all makers.

Then we asked if they liked TikTok. They all said that it is a good app and it is very addicting. Thirdly we asked them about how long they spend on the app. Callie spends about 5 hours each day. Sarah and Silas spend around an hour. Jayda, Shealynn, and Ethan use it for about 2 hours per day. Morgan watches it for about 3 hours a day. Hayden spends about 10 minutes.

What kind of TikTok do you like watching? Callie and Hayden like watching funny TikToks. Morgan, Jayda, Sarah and Shealynn like watching dancing and storytime TikToks.

Next, we asked what kind of TikToks do you make? Callie, Morgan, Aleah, Shealynn, Jayda, and Annabelle like making dancing TikToks. Silas, Hayden, and Ethan like making funny TikToks.

Coke vs. Pepsi By: Kylie Foxworthy and Katelyn Sileven

Coke and Pepsi have a lot of the same ingredients, but some are different. Coke has carbonated water, sugar, caffeine, Phosphoric Acid, and natural flavorings in it. Coke was discovered in 1886 by Atlantic Phar-macist- John S. Pemberton, at his Pemberton Chemical Company. Pepsi has carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, sugar, Phosphoric Acid, natural flavorings, and caffeine in it. Also, it is a lot sweeter than Coke. Pepsi was discovered in 1893 by Caleb Brandham in his drug store, the original name was called “Brad’s Drink.’’ We interviewed 28 people if they liked Coke or Pepsi better. 12 people said they liked Coke better. 16 said they liked Pepsi better. A lot of people said they like both and they both taste really good. Libby Berthoux said they have different flavors. Kourtney Spence said Pepsi is flat and Evan Goforth said he likes Pepsi better because it doesn’t blow up. This is what people think about Coke and Pepsi.

Board & Card games By Carter RBS & Rose Koy

A card game is any game using playing cards as the primary device with which the game is played, be they traditional or game-specific. Some examples would be Uno, Unstable Unicorns, or any game with a deck of cards. Mr. Cass actually encourages kids to bring card games, as long as you don't gamble. He sent out a survey about how to improve recess to buy board or card games was an option. He has money set aside and said he would buy some if he knew they would be used properly. For an example of a card game that has set rules is Uno. Where the goal of the game is to have no cards in your hand. Don’t gamble and make sure to ask a teacher before playing at school, even if there is free time.

Student Council Volleyball Tournament

By: Jayden Bonner and Nevaeh Turner

The annual Student Council Volleyball Tournament is coming up later this month. The tournament is to raise money for the American Heart Association. We interviewed Mrs. Deason, the student council sponsor, on why they host the tournament. She said, “We do the volleyball tournament to raise money for the American Heart Association and because the kids really seem to like it¨. The tournament has been go-ing on at our school for around six to seven years!

We also interviewed Mr. Cass on his thoughts about the Annual Volleyball Tournament. He said that he thinks they could charge more per team so that we could raise more money for the American Heart

Association, and he thinks that the students really seem to enjoy it. Mr. Cass also mentioned that he really enjoys watching the boys try to play volleyball since they are not that good at it. I assure you that if you try to play with the other teams, you will have a lot of fun. The seventh-grade team names are Stu-Co, Honkers, Guess Who, and Bad Kids. The eighth grade teams are Ping Dongs, Stu-Co, Power Puff Girls, and Kool-Aid Jammers.

Cha Ching... Whoa that’s a lot!

By: Cody Mize

There are a lot of Kitchen Appliances, but some are just way too much! Like the $399.95 dollar blend-er. It is called the Vitamix, and it is said to be the best blender of 2019 and is pretty expensive. The reason is it is very durable and has a very fast spinner. It is apparently a little quieter than the “Blendtec Stealth Blend-er” Also, it is so powerful that it can heat up your soup. It has to be going pretty fast. It can blend anything, edible, that shows why it is so expensive, and by the looks of it, you should get one.

Next is the “Blendtec Stealth Blender” Apparently this is one of the quietest sounding blend-ers. It is about $2,500, and it has won many awards in 2013. It has an ultra-high-speed motor. It is said to be very safe and is a very well made product. It has a 3.8 horse-power motor. The company that made this also made one of the most expensive blenders, and they are going against the Vita-mix blenders, which I talked about back in paragraph one.

The next expensive kitchen appliance is the Samsung Black Stainless Steel, it is a refrigerator. It is $2,299.00, which is pretty expensive for a fridge. You can hang notes, and stuff on it, you can even put drawings on it. It has an ice machine part and is fingerprint-proof, basically, fingerprints won’t show up. It has two doors for the bottom, part so you have more storage for vegetables, and fruits. Being honest this is kind of a rip-off since that stuff is on any other fridge, but the only interesting thing is the finger-print proof thing.

This one is called the “Hammacher Schlemmer '', a restaurant appliance. It extracts about 84 oz of fresh fruit. It has stainless steel micro-serrated blades, that cut up the fruits like crazy. It can cut up an insane 28 oranges in one minute! You can take the whole thing apart very easily, so you don’t have to try to clean it for a long time. It has a tube-like part, that pours the fruit that it cut up, or made into juice, into a cup, or anything you put under the tube. The thing is, it is $9,900! It sounds like a pretty good machine, but would you really want to pay that much for a blender type thing?

This one is an oven, it is called the La Cornue, and it is £30,000 ($100,000). It has been owned by George Clooney and Brad Pitt. People say it comes in unlimited options, and it is owned by a family company with three different generations. There are four ovens in this one oven. There are two vaulted ovens, one electric oven, and one gas oven. There is even a grill in this thing. That is a lot of stuff. I think that this might be a good deal, saying how many famous people bought and that so many people have said is amazing, and that has endless options, I think if you get very rich, you should buy it!

Ok, I just thought why not put a whole kitchen on here? The most expensive kitchen in the world is called the “Fiore di Cristallo”, it is $1.6 million! It seems to be pret-ty big, and the walls look very nice. It has a mirror and stuff around the kitchen. It is in London, and it is an insane kitchen. The kitchen’s walls legit reflect back to you. It is cleaned, and it is insane. I don’t think that the price is really that fair, it isn’t like it gives you a lot of money or anything for a matter of fact you’re paying a lot of your money just to go to a cool kitchen, that has a lot of stuff in it.

So, out of all of these would you buy any of these? I wouldn’t because I would stick with the cheap ones, that work pretty well, like what is the point of buying something that you won’t even use that much. If you do use them a lot you either work at a food place, or you would just love cooking. That is just my opinion so yea.

Chickens By Alyssa Garner

There are more than 25 billion chickens in the world and dozens of breeds. The chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus, is a domestic subspecies of the red junglefowl, a member of the pheasant family that is native to Asia. Genetic studies have found that the grey junglefowl also contributed to the chicken's evolution. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, "Humans first domesticated chickens of Indian origin for the purpose of cockfighting in Asia, Africa, and Eu-rope. Very little formal attention was given to egg or meat production. We've already said there are more than 25 billion chickens in the world. This makes the chicken more numerous than any other bird on the planet. The United States alone consumes 8 billion chickens a year, and around 250 eggs per capita. There are approximately 280 million laying hens producing 50 billion eggs in the U.S. each year. Adult male chickens over a year old are called roosters in Australia, Canada, and the U.S., but are called cocks in the U.K. Males less than a year old are called cockerels, and castrated males are called capons. Adult females are hens, and young females less than a year old are called pullets, although, in the egg-laying industry, a pullet becomes a hen when she begins to lay eggs. Young chickens are called chicks. Chickens begin communicating be-fore they are hatched when the mother hen makes a purring noise towards her eggs and the chicks peep back at her from inside the unhatched eggs. There are approximately 30 distinct vocalizations that chickens use to communicate with each other. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat seeds and insects, but also have been known to eat mice and lizards. Chickens can recognize around 100 different faces. Chickens can't fly very far, but they can get airborne enough to make it over a fence. Roosters perform a little dance called 'tidbitting' in which they make sounds (food calls) and move their head up and down, picking up and dropping a bit of food. Researchers have found that females prefer males that often perform tidbitting and have larger, brighter combs on top of their heads. The rooster's wattle — the dangly bit beneath his beak — helps him to gain a hen's attention when he is tidbitting. Chickens live in flocks and establish a "pecking order" — an order of domi-nance/importance. Birds that are higher in the pecking order get priority food access and nest-ing locations. Removing birds from a flock will disturb the pecking order temporarily. Adding to the flock, especially younger birds, will also disturb the pecking order and can lead to fighting
