The deadline for nominations for this event has been extended until Wednesday,

September 28 . The event will be held at Mt Gambier on October 9.

If, like me, you are wondering what a kermesse is, here is a definition:

A kermesse is a style of road bicycle race that is common in Western Europe.

The kermesse is similar to the criterium but differs primarily in total course length

and lap length. While a criterium traditionally last 60–90 minutes, a kermesse will

often take 120–180 minutes. A single lap in a criterium is usually less than 5

kilometres while the kermesse is usually 5-10 kilometres per lap.

The races are usually 90-140 kilometres in total length. The race is a set distance and

number of laps over the established course.

SA Kermesse State Championship

Earlier this year we reported on the success of some CDCC members in Round 1 of

the UniSA Australian HPV Super Series Pedal Prix (HPV stands for Human Powered

Vehicle).

Round 2 of the series was a 6 hour event at Victoria Park on July 31. The team

completed 217 laps and placed third in the Open Category.

The series recently concluded with a 24 hour event at Murray Bridge, September 17-

18. The team completed 454 laps and placed fourth in the Open Category.

Team Ballistic, managed by CDCC member Brian Franson, came second in the series

overall.

The team that participated in the 24 hour event consisted of CDCC members Kyle

Franson, Carla Franson, Alex King and Ian Cox.

Congratulations to the team on a fantastic effort!

Last summer our club entered a team in the last 3 rounds of the Cyclo Sportif

Series, with the team name “Not So” thinking it would comprise of the Not So

young or fit but the team ended up with a full spread of ability and age,

We competed at Williamstown and twice at The Range. Over the 3 events, team

members included Ian Cox, Bruce Cox, Bradley Knobben, Ben Knobben, Paul King,

Alex King, William Little, Michael Fleming and Ken Little. In round 7 the team

picked up the award for the “Most Decorous Team”.

Over the events we all enjoyed the experience and some of us picked up new skills,

such as riding a pace line. Although there was a spread of abilities the work was

shared and assistance was given to the slower riders in the steeper sections.

Everyone came back knowing they had been on a “vigorous social ride” and enjoyed

the camaraderie afterwards.

Summer is now approaching with the 2011-12 Cyclo Sportif Series kicking off at

Williamstown on November 20.

These events are a team time trial and aimed at introducing cyclists to competition,

improving bunch skills and a good reason to keep fit. The whole team starts and

finishes together.

Possibly we could field two teams this season, one for the Not So young and

another for the Are So young where bunch and road skills can be improved in a

more controlled environment. I am sure one of our more experienced young guns

would ride with and tutor the juniors.

Best wishes to Justin Gassner The following message is from the Cycling SA website:

Unfortunately one of our members and regular competitors has been involved in an acci-

dent. Justin Gassner was riding in the western suburbs when a car collided with him. Justin

suffered severe lacerations to his face and was admitted to hospital where he required lots

of stitches. I have spoken with Justin's dad and am very happy to advise that Justin is now

at home recovering.

Justin is a fine young man and a very talented rider and he will bounce back well.

We wish Justin a speedy recovery.
