This past summer, I was in the Westerville July 4th parade with my friend Mya Rasar. Mya won the Rotary contestto name the theme of the parade and one prize she got was to have a float in the parade on the 4th of July and sheasked me if I could ride on it with her. The float was the 11th in the parade and was really big. It had swings, abench and a tree on it. Mya, her cousin Brian Kray, and me were the only three people on the float. I had neverbeen in a parade before and thought it was really fun. We got to swing on the swings, wave at people and throw alittle bit of candy. When our float was done with the parade, we got to go watch the rest of the parade. We had agreat time at the Westerville 4th of July parade!

Keep On Counting! The PTA tracks the number of hours worked by volunteers each year. Theoverall numbers are submitted to the Ohio PTA and the school district andare used to show how much work volunteers do for our school. Ourvolunteer hours help to demonstrate our “value” added to the school. Thisinformation is also important as we apply for grants to help fund our Eco-Lab.

Please remember to sign in and out each time you work at school in anycapacity. The Volunteer Sign-In Sheet is located on a clipboard on the filingcabinet outside the office. You can log hours worked outside the school inthe Volunteer Notebook. Each volunteer keeps a separate page in thenotebook. Take a blank sheet, write your name at the top, and fill in theinformation.

If you don’t have time to get to school to log your hours, or forget to do sowhile you’re there, please submit the information to the VolunteerCoordinator, Marilyn Rogers, at [email protected] or 471-4776.

Look Into the Library at CCM

The primary goal in buying books for the library is to support thecurriculum. These are titles that tie into what is being taught in theclassroom. A secondary goal is to buy titles that kids want to read,i.e. the “popular” books like Diary of A Wimpy Kid. The 20th

Celebration Library Donation program, chaired by Angie Fotis, isworking on obtaining library bound book titles that the kids want toread. If you would like to find out what titles the library is looking forOR would like to give a monetary contribution, please email Angieat [email protected]

The average cost of a library bound childrens book is $18.00. Manyof the non-fiction science books cost are $20.00 each. Ourremaining budget allows for the purchase of about 100 new books.Compare that to the 132 titles in our collection that were publishedin 1985 or earlier and need to be “weeded” from the shelves.Science and technology titles should be replaced ideally every 5years but no later than every 10 years. A collection analysis wasdone and 37% of the science books and 9% of the technologybooks need to be weeded. Scholastic book fair profits have gone down each year and we maynot even have the option to take cash next year. We are lookingforward to the Barnes & Noble book fair the 1st week of Decemberto see how that may positively impact our library’s collection.

Last year, the PTA budget gave the library $500.00 – it wasused to fund library books, updated DVDs, and new metalbookends. Additional money was donated from Book Fairand Bake Sale profits for a total spent of $1661.16. Thelibrary would not have been able to afford any of theseitems through the district budget. This year we received$523.00 from Book Fair profits and we bought 40 books. We have been given a "wish list" from our library. DuringBack To School Days we had several parents offer topurchase some of the books on the list and others thatmade donations. So far, we have collected $145 andparents have signed up for 16 books!!! Each book runsabout $15-$18 so that we are able to get library boundbooks to hold up to the wear and tear!

If you would like to help us meet the goal of purchasing all43 books please contact Angie Fotis at 314-5464 [email protected].

We also have a list of the remaining books if you and yourchild would like to pick a specific title.

.

CCMS Library Fast FactsBudget is $2500. per year. $500 for Spectrum, our library circulation system$100 for magazines for teachers and students $1900 for library books10,596 books in the collection
