Personal Statement:As a podiatry resident I will strive for excellence and devote my time and energy into developing into a respectable Doctor ofPodiatric Medicine when I finish my training. Specialties such as podiatric orthopedics, sports medicine, surgery, and diabetes arevery interesting to me. People are having so many problems with their lower extremities and it is very unfortunate. Losing function or having limitedfunction of the lower extremities for any period of time must be frustrating. Many professional athletes lose some of their playingcareer to things like a torn Achilles tendon, stress fractures, broken bones in the foot or ankle, and other ailments. The orthopedicsand sports medicine aspects of podiatry have always intrigued me because I like the bones and just about anything that has to dowith movement. I played varsity tennis for my high school and I played in a United States Tennis Association (USTA) league forTeam New Haven’s team until my sophomore year in college. There was an enormous amount of wear on my legs. After almostevery match, I would be so sore from my knees down. The sharp cuts and the constant start and stop moves would take its toll onmy ankles. The non-athletic side of podiatry is also interesting and it hits home for me as well. Diabetes runs in my family and I haveseen how it has affected some of my relatives. They would have to wear diabetic shoes, socks, and compression stockings so thatthey can improve the circulation of blood in their legs and feet. I have always wanted to be able to help people that are beingaffected by diabetes and help educate them on how important it is for diabetics to improve circulation in their lower extremities toavoid circulatory problems. This disease hits close to home for me, and Doctors of Podiatric Medicine help to increase the standardof living for diabetics and other people who may have foot and ankle problems. It would be amazing to be a part of a group ofpeople that can help others in so many ways. Doctors need to have certain qualities in order to succeed in their profession. Goodcharacter qualities go a long way in the profession. Not only does a doctor have to know the science and anatomy of the body, butthey must also have the personal qualities to be able to properly deal with patients. I would think that I show my peers respect. In away, the respect that I gain from my peers does stem from the two adjectives; responsible and calm. I am not a person who talks alot. However, when people want to talk about conflicts, they come to me for some kind of resolution or confidence. My peers knowthat I am also responsible enough to not go and spread private matters into the public scene. I do make an effort to show that I amsomeone that you can count on and that’s a very important quality to me. I also feel that I am a relaxed yet confident person. I justwon’t let every little thing get to me, and remain calm and relaxed when I get into a situation that might cause others to get uptight. Ifeel confident enough in my ability to absorb what I need to know and how to explain the topic if I am asked about it by an attending, resident, or other staff member or by a patient as a doctor. I don’t want to make myself out to be some arrogant and proud individualwho thinks that I can be smarter than the people who would be teaching me. I just like to think that whatever challenges someonethrows at me; I’ll be able to meet it head on. I want to be a well-rounded physician. I want to have good fundamental surgical skillsfrom irrigation and debridement to rearfoot cases and everything in between. I want to do it all. It’s also to have the tools to be ableto do wound care, manage in-patient and out-patient needs, and how to run a private practice. I would like this so I would have theoptions on whether to work for a hospital, join a group, or start a practice myself. I feel like I would be a good podiatric resident. Iwould be very focused on achieving my goal of being a good doctor that patients could count on. I would work and study hard if I amaccepted into your podiatry residency program. I would take every day and every opportunity to learn something from anyone that Iwould work with. It would be a humbling and a great privilege to work at your residency program.

Dear Residency Director:
I am pleased to introduce Stephan Cunningham to you. Stephan is currently a fourth year student at the
Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM). I had the opportunity to work with
Stephan during both his Standardized and Simulated Patient Rotations at KSUCPM . I have also worked
with him during both his junior and senior clinical rotation at the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic (CFAC).
He works well with peers and makes an effort to improve on his patient management skills with every
patient encounter.
Some of the professional affiliations that Stephan has include: KSUCPM Tennis Club, Basketball Club, and
Soccer Club, Kappa Tau Epsilon fraternity, American Association of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He has
volunteered for the Step Out Diabetes Walk and the Student National Podiatric Medical Association
Basketball Tournament. He has a strong interest in tennis, first competing as a junior tennis player and
later working as a tennis instructor.
Stephan is interested in finding a challenging program that will develop both his clinical and surgical
skills. He has a strong work ethic. He will successfully contribute his attributes to your program. He
would make a very good resident and I strongly recommend him to your program.
Sincerely,
Abe Osbourne, DPM, MBA Diplomate ABPM, Fellow ACFAOM Associate Professor- Department of Podiatric Medicine Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine 216-916-7464 [email protected]

To Whom It May Concern:
I am pleased to write to you regarding Stephan Cunningham. Stephan is currently a fourth year student at the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM). I have had the opportunity to teach Stephan in the classroom as well as observe and work with him during several of his clinical rotations at KSUCPM. Stephan has also served as an assistant to me in the operating room.
I have consistently found Stephan to be a mature and thoughtful student. I believe that he has a solid grasp of and appreciation for that which he is being trained to do. He has displayed this to me in his interactions with faculty, other students, and patients. Finally, he has a strong commitment to patient care and well-being.
For the above reasons, I recommend that Stephan be considered for your residency program. I am confident he can be a valued member of the resident team. Please contact me with any questions regarding this student.
