I would like to share with you the life of a missionary; I do hope his life story will challenge your life.

In the early 1900’s, 16-year-old William Whiting Borden graduated from a Chicago high school. He was an heir to the Bordenfortune, which was an American producer of food and beverage products. At one time, the company was the largest U.S. producerof dairy and pasta products.

Before Borden began his Ivy League education at Yale University, his parents sent him on a trip around the world for hisgraduation present.

Earlier in Borden’s life, he had come to Christ through the great ministry of D.L. Moody. While on his trip around the world, something happened that no one expected. As Borden traveled through Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, he felt a growingburden for the world’s hurting people.

Borden wrote a letter to his parents and informed them that he wanted to spend the remainder of his life being a missionary. Uponhearing the news, one of his friends remarked that he would be “thr owing his life away as a missionary.”

Upon his return, Borden went on to Yale University and graduated. He then studied and graduated from Princeton TheologicalSeminary. When Borden finished his elite Ivy League education, he boarded a ship for China to serve as a missionary.

Due to his passion to reach the Muslim people, he stopped in Egypt to learn the Arabic language. While he was in Egypt, 25-year-old Borden contracted spinal meningitis. Within a month, he was dead.

When the news of Borden’s death was cabled back to the United States, nearly every major American newspaper reported on it. Asstated in his biography, “A wave of sorrow went around the world…he not only gave up his fortune, but himself to be amissionary.”

Borden had walked away from his wealth to take the Gospel of Jesus to the nations of the world. Most regarded it as a tragedy;however, God took the tragedy and did something far greater than Borden could ever do himself. When thousands of young menand women read Borden’s story in the newspapers of America, it inspired them to leave all they had and give their lives to reachthe nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

When Borden’s parents were given his Bible, they found the following. Just after he renounced his fortune to go to missions, hewrote the words, “No Reserve.” His father told him he would always have a job in the company, then at a later point, his fathertold him he would never let him work in the company again. At this time, Borden wrote in his Bible, “No Retreat.” Then, theydiscovered in his Bible these words, written shortly before his death in Egypt, “No Regret.”

Was his life a waste? Not from God’s perspective. God used his life and death to call thousands and thousands of young men andwomen to leave all they had and give their lives to reach the nations with the Gospel. God did greater things through Borden’sstory than He may have ever done with his life in China.

What lesson can we learn from Borden? We can all get in a mode of playing it safe in life. We tend to retreat from the things thatare hard. When we look back over time, we often have many regrets. How will you live this week, this month, this year? Live lifewith…

No reserve: Do NOT hold back in your life. Whatever it is, or whatever you are facing, do not hold back. Face it. Go for it. Youhave only one shot in life; therefore, do it! Let it go! Give it your all!

No retreat: Do NOT always choose the easy path in life. There are times when God’s will is not easy. Go forward in what God isleading you to do in life. Do not turn back. Go forward with God. People love to take the easy way out; always resorting to thecomfortable! Since God has chosen you, choose His path for your life!

No regret: Do NOT live your life cautiously. When your life is over one day, you should desire to have no regrets. Live life to thefullest. Choose only God’s will for your life. Be motivated by one thing alone: The will of God!

From the introduction of I Am A Church Member:

Based on research of 557 churches from 2004 to 2010, nine out of ten churches in America aredeclining or growing at a pace that is slower than that of their communities. Simply stated, churchesare losing ground in their own backyards.

We can blame it on the secular culture. And we often do. We can blame it on the godless politics ofour nation. We often do that as well. We can even blame it on the churches, the hypocritical members, and the uncaring pastors. Lots of Christians are doing that.

I am proposing that we who are church members need to look in the mirror. I am suggesting thatcongregations across America are weak because many of us church members have lost the biblicalunderstanding of what it means to be a part of the body of Christ.

Tip 6: Calling Out the Best in OthersDefinition:Calling out the best in others is part affirmation and part invitation— affirming something in someone and askingthem to keep bringing it into the group. It applies to both individuals and to the group as a whole.Biblical r eferences:• Hebrews 10:24 “...spur one another on toward love and good deeds”• Romans 12:1–8 “We all have spiritual gifts that we should identify and nurture in a group context”Why it’ s important:• Encourages us to be better people• Points out places we can grow• Helps us love other peopleHow to do it:• See it: be aware of what others are doing in the group• Name it: name or label it clearly—be specific, give examples• Encourage it

A word from one of our Lifegroup leaders:

The 'Broken & Beautiful' small group has been meeting on Tuesday evenings in the home of Sue Sherman.

We started this last fall with the Bible study of "What On Earth Am I Here For" written by Rick Warren. This isa newer version of "Purpose Driven Life". We took a Spiritual Health Assessment to help us evaluate the areaswe need to grow in living our life for Christ. We studied five areas: Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministryand Evangelism. We used these areas to help us on how to further develop our spiritual life.

We most recently started studying "The Daniel Plan". This study is to help us work towards a healthy lifestyleprogram founded on biblical principles. It focuses on the 'Essentials': Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends. This study is based on Daniels story in Daniel 1: 1-21. ~ Rose Deal

First Fruits Report 7-13-14

Our contributions to the building fund in June were consistent with the giving over the last couple ofyears. We added $12,068.

Bank balance is now $597,766.

We are half way thru our 3rd year of our 3 year Forward in Faith Building Campaign. We have givingunits that filled out pledge cards and giving units that are giving that did not pledge. Since we startedthe campaign we’ve had some people that have moved and we’ve had many new people that havejoined our congregation.

I have been asked to give Team Vision, our building committee, an estimate of our fund at the end ofthis year. I predict we will have close to $700,000 on hand. That is a HUGE PRAISE GOD!!!The committee has been tirelessly working with the architect, BGW, and the general contractor, StoryConstruction, and the United Methodist District Land and Location committee to determine what wecan build within our means.

What can we do as a congregation in the meantime? We must tirelessly pray for God’s guidance inthis process, pray for patience, perseverance, keep our eyes on the goal, and don’t let naysayers ornegative talk (I call that Satan) cause us to lose focus.

New people have been brought to this congregation over the last 15 years and we outgrew our currentbuildings. That set us on a course to build a new church for future generations.

We give all the Glory to God for what He is doing here in Center Point on Summit Street and for whatHe will be doing in Center Point in the days to come over at our new building site!
