PLATE CHANGER LUNCHEON
Les Dames d’Escoffier San Antonio Chapter’s president/luncheon co-chair Blanca Aldaco and co-chair Debbie Gonzalez hosted a delicious, enlightening journey celebrating Influential Women of the Table.
Guests were treated to flavors and tastemakers of the past, present and future showcasing ingredients and dishes that contributed to San Antonio’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, from the Chili Queens who graced Plaza de Armas in the late 1800s to the innovators that have made San Antonio the epicenter of culinary arts in Texas today. From Tex-Mex to Tex-Next, this luncheon was an official Tricentennial event benefiting the Les Dames’ Aspirations Grant program.
The Aspirations Grant program, initiated in 2015, has already awarded $85,000 to local culinary professionals and farmers. In 2018, the program awarded a total of $35,000 to seven women-owned restaurants and caterers from Rockport and Port Aransas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

GERMAN CLUB OPENING
The San Antonio German Club presented the Opening German in honour of the season’s debutantes. Twelve beautiful debs, family, friends, escorts, sponsors, members and board members, attended the annual event where the debs made their presentation followed by a first dance with their fathers. You couldn’t miss the debs in their beautiful white ball gowns. The event was catered by Rosemary and the RK Group, beautiful flowers and décor by Danny Cuellar, Trinity Flowers and Events and Illusions, with music by Ramiro Cervera and His Orchestra, Al Gomez – Trumpeter and The Big Beyond, and program photos by Gary Stanko of Billo Smith Studios.
The Club was formed in 1880 by a group of young single men. First known as The Ascension Club, the name was changed in 1890 to The San Antonio German Club following the popularity of a ballroom dance of the era, called “The German.” For one hundred and thirty eight years since that time, with the exception of those years interrupted by war, The San Antonio German Club has presented its debutantes during San Antonio social season. This year was no exception!

CHEFS CHEFSChefs for Chefs is a culinary program
offering assistance to chefs in their time of need. San Antonio’s well-known chefs including Chef Giovanni
Silva from recently opened Grill 254 rallied the community together to raise funds for hit-and-run victim Samantha Flores at Grill 254 at La Cantera Resort & Spa. Known for her “great heart,” Flores, manager at Ramen Bar, was injured by a hit-and-run driver while riding her bicycle during the early morning hours of September 7th.
As of the event on October 14th, Flores attended the event in her honor and is on the road to recovery. As bills began to mount, Chef Michael Sohocki, Restaurant Gwendolyn, reached out to other chefs, Culinaria, and La Cantera Resort & Spa to enlist their aid to raise funds and Samantha’s spirit.
Guests sampled featured brunch bites, beverages including signature drink-grapefruit spritz, bid on silent auction items and listened to the music by Finding Friday. Check out the new Grill254-a cool place to catch a weekend sporting event on one of the numerous televisions at this sports bar.

PROJECT MEND’S 6TH ANNUAL GALA
Project Mend, (Celebrating 25 years) a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with disabilities, honored Warm Springs Foundation Board Chairwoman Helen Eversberg and the foundation.
Cocktails were served and entertainment provided while guests purchased envelopes containing mystery gift certificates in “The Envelope, Please” and numbers that match special bottles of wine or spirits in “Libation Lotto” mystery games from strolling volunteers.
“Project Mend has a unique green mission that serves people who otherwise couldn’t live their lives to the fullest,” Eversberg said. “Warm Springs is pleased to assist them with their mission.”
During dinner, Eversberg received the organization’s Murlin Johnson Legacy Award for her determination, integrity and service to non-profit charities that serve people with disabilities, values that Johnson infused into the agency. Eversberg’s longtime friend Sonny Melendrez was Master of Ceremonies.
Gala proceeds support Project Mend’s mission of improving the quality of life and enhancing mobility for individuals living with disabilities and illness who have limited means by providing refurbished medical equipment and assistive technology.

WITTE GAME DINNER
Western ruled at the 48th annual dinner presented by H-E-B. This year’s theme, Rio Fandango, celebrated the San Antonio River’s pivotal role as a lifeline for generations before us and many to come, all with a Spanish flair.
The rain poured and plans changed, but Chairs Jessica and Ryan Berg oversaw a full evening of auctions, wild-game cuisine and entertainment by Kevin Fowler. A little rain never hurt anyone according to the 1200 faithful attendees who return every year for the event well known throughout Texas.
Funds raised provide valuable support for the programs and exhibits of San Antonio’s most widely visited public museum.

The President’s Gala annually raises around $500,000 for programs at UT Health San Antonio. This year, the proceeds benefited cancer care and support, which is so appropriate given the development of the UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center. UT Health
San Antonio president William Henrich, M.D., honored philanthropists Peggy and Lowry Mays. Inspired by their leadership, the evening was called, “A Legacy of Caring.” Proceeds will establish the Peggy and Lowry Mays Patient Care Endowment, which will support the Patient Supportive Care Program at the UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, in perpetuity.
The gala also marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine and its continuing service to the community. Over the past 50 years, more than 13,000 medical students have graduated from the Long School of Medicine.
As one of only four National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Centers in Texas, the Mays Cancer Center takes its placed among the nation’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to leading-edge research innovations, life-changing treatment options, and world-class cancer care.

LIVING LEGENDMore than 500 guests filled the ballroom for the ninth annual A Conversation With a
Living Legend® San Antonio. The record-breaking event raised more than $933,000 for The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; specifically, summer camps benefiting pediatric patients at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital.
Event chairs Bob and Mary Worth, Jordan and Brian Arriaga and Clint and Jessica Worth spearheaded more than $643,000 in fundraising prior to the event; however, the luncheon kicked off with a challenge from an anonymous, San Antonio-based donor who vowed to match all donations raised within the two hour luncheon, up to $100,000.
During the luncheon, guests heard from Dr. Richard Gorlick, chair, Pediatrics, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, and Dr. Peter WT Pisters, president, MD Anderson. The audience was brought to tears as they listened to 16-year-old pediatric cancer survivor Maggie Howard share how the very summer camps guests were supporting changed her life.
By the time the honorable James A. Baker, III, took the stage for the Conversation, another $41,000 had been raised. The former U.S. Secretary of State joined Tom Johnson, former CEO of CNN and a longtime member of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Board of Visitors, for a fire-side style chat covering everything from local politics to current global
events. As soon as the Conversation wrapped, the luncheon chairs happily announced that more than $100,000 had been raised and that someone in the audience was so inspired by the generosity of hundreds of San Antonians that he or she contributed another $100,000.

LEGACY LUNCHEON
In 1999, a Texas law was passed that forever changed the lives of children with hearing loss. The establishment of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening was spearheaded
by Dr. Vernon James and Dr. Dessie James. This law required hospitals to screen newborns for hearing loss, resulting in a higher early identification rate. The James’ were honored for their diligence and perseverance in advocating for children with hearing loss and their families. Their efforts to ensure that babies with hearing loss be identified and cared for was groundbreaking and has given thousands of families hope for their children.
Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children honored Doctors Vernon and Dessie James during the annual Legacy Luncheon. Proceeds will support diagnostic hearing tests for babies when a hearing loss is suspected, programs for children who have hearing impairment, therapy programs for babies who are birth to three years old and their parents, audiology services, speech-language therapy and the educational program.
