By their very nature, supply-chain problems are not easily solved by one discipline. Rather, the complexity of issues requires an interdisciplinary approach. Talented researchers from different disciplines within the University of Illinois at Chicago have come together to solve problems and help partners implement advanced solutions to supply-chain management issues. The Center for Supply Chain Management and Logistics has identified the following emerging issues and is actively engaged in researching the following four areas:
1.Public Private Partnerships in Transportation Faculty: Darold Barnum, Manage-rial Studies, PI, Anthony Pagano,
2
Managerial Studies, Co-PI, P.S. Sriraj, Urban Transportation Center, Co-PI
2. Economic Development and Transportation and Logistics Clusters with Emphasis on China Faculty: Anthony M. Pagano, Managerial Studies, PI, Alan Malter, Managerial Studies, Co-PI, Chris Westland, Information and Decision Sciences, Co-PI, Paul Metaxatos, Urban Transportation Center, Co-PI, Kouros Mohammadian, Civil and Materials Engineering, Co-PI, Jane Lin, Civil and Materials Engineering, Co-PI, Kazuya Kawamura, Urban Planning, Co-PI.
3. Electronic Commerce and Technology in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

UIC and the Center for Supply Chain Management have recently begun a partnership with RR Donnelley wherein students are given the opportunity to speak directly to VP’s of Sales, Finance, Supply Chain and IT to discuss future internship opportunities. RR Donnelley has expressed their interest in investing in UIC supply chain students, specifically working with them from the beginning of their college experience by way of reoccurring internships that could potentially lead to jobs after gradation. This partnership was kicked off in January of 2012 with an information session hosted by Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares, over 100 students and faculty were in attendance.

Social and Environmental Benefits of Innovative Urban Logistics
By Professor Jane Lin
Various innovative goods delivery strategies have been studied and even field tested in particular in Europe and Asia. One of such is delivery consolidation through the cooperation among the businesses, which has been deployed successfully in some European and Asian cities (Kohler, 2001; Pattier, 2005; Taniguchi and Nemoto, 2003). Essentially, delivery consolidation schemes reduce the number of delivery tours by combining shipments from multiple businesses and loading them onto one truck. It has been empirically shown that such delivery system will significantly reduce the number of truck trips especially into the already crowded urban highways, truck VMT, noise, emissions and energy consumptions (Kohler, 2001; Ogata, 2008).

Our previous investigation has theoretically identified to what extent such a system may bring economic, social and environmental benefits compared to the existing delivery systems, especially for small to medium businesses who are limited by human resources, financial capacity, and space (Chen et al., 2011a,b,c,d). For example, in State of Michigan, there are numerous small and medium businesses providing the three big automobile companies with basic raw materials (e.g., sand to make

glass, iron ore to make steel, and petroleum to make polymers), parts and components that ultimately are funneled into a single plant that performs the final assembly (Ruan and Lin, 2010). These materials must arrive at the right time, in the right quantity, and in a coordinated manner so the assembly can be done quickly and efficiently.
In this study, we examine the effectiveness of delivery consolidation in terms of air pollutant emissions, energy use, and costs to automobile

International Conference on Electronic Commerce
The ICEC Conference is a forum for the exchange of new ideas related to emerging technologies and managerial practices in electronic commerce, IT services and mobile business. The CSCML will be presenting this year, August 7-8, on the campus of the Singapore Management University in downtown Singapore. The ICEC conference represents one of the two

conference events that we are required to organize as a part our grant. Director of the CSCML, Professor Anthony Pagano, and Professor Christopher Westland have committed to organizing six presentations in two tracks for the conference. Faculty members from the CSCML will be given the opportunity to present their research in these tracks and the papers presented at the ICEC 2012 will be published in ACM transactions. “I think its location in Singapore offers us an opportunity to provide speakers and activities that would be highly relevant to supply chain management.” -Prof. Christopher Westland

manufacturing industry. The research strives to investigate the following research questions:
1) What is the benefit/cost of delivery consolidation to businesses?
2) What are the social and environmental benefits of delivery consolidation in terms of reduction in total emissions and life cycle energy demand?
3) Compared with other government programs to cut transportation-related air pollution and fuel use, is it worthwhile to consider providing subsidy to support delivery consolidation?
4) How do “green” technology options (e.g., information technology, packaging technology, fuel technology and vehicle technology) affect the above benefits?

Fall 2011 Supply Chain Career Fair
On October 13th, 2012, the Center for Supply Chain Management and Logistics hosted their annual Supply Chain Career Fair and student information session. The event took place in the Cardinal Room of the Student Center East building. Guest speakers from five companies including Target, Caterpillar, DSC Logistics, Illinois Trucking Association, and CTA presented their company overviews and Supply Chain strategies to UIC Students and faculty. After their presentations, undergraduate and graduate supply chain students were given the opportunity to speak directly with executives in Supply Chain and Human Resources about future job opportunities and internships as well as dive deeper into what their company missions are and what initiatives their companies are taking for innovation in the Supply Chain Management field.
