Seminar .revealssuccess. secrets. ,. .

By Phil AngeloManaging editor

In order to reach your goals in life;you have to have dogged determination,

David Hicks, a motivational speak-er, gave that nugget to an audience of35 Friday afternoon at theMezzalunaIn downtown Kankakee.

Hicks was speaking to interestedpersons at the Center for SuccessfulLiving Showcase, a seriesof motiva-

. tional workshops organizedby localsuccess coach Charles Betterton.

Hicks told the story of Steve Jen-ner, an unknown Olympian, as an illus-tration. '

Jenner, after a lifetime of training, was preparing to SWllii1nth~uniChOlympics, when he was inform 'thathe had' appendicitis. He neede anoperation.

Just taking the painkillers wouldmean he would not pass the Olympicsdrug screening. Rather than give liP his, dream, Jefiner had his appendixremoved, using only a local anesthetic.- Less than a week later, he was onthe starting block. Diving into thepool, he tore every stitch.' From thebeginning of the race to the end, helost-two pints of blood.

He came within two fingers of agold medal, breaking a world recordin the process. Teday, though, no oneknows his name because he was beat-en by MarkSpitz.

"Is he a champion? Yei," Hicks said;Hicks, a former Eagle Scout and the

Salutatorian of his high school class, isnow president 'of Success MotivationInstitute, after being a top salesman. .

He told the audience that they don'thave to sacrifice their family to be suc-cessful in business. The key.is to set agoal and stick to it. An older father, oneof his goals today is to live to a healthy100 and-see his son grow up .

"You need to crystallize your think-ing," he says . ."If you don't know whereyou're going, you'll wind up some-where else."

Most people, he said, spend moretime planning their vacations, than'they do planning their lives. fl

"The bigger the goal you nave," hesaid, "the more likely you. wIn/be toachieve it." All people have the willto win, he said; what sets Mrinnersapart is the will to prepare. i

Optimism and self-confidence areessential. He said a firm"on:~e experi-mented by avoiding its hiring guide-lines, instead hiring salesmen who

.tested "more optimistic" on. a psy-chological test.

Even though the new hires did nothave as many technical qualifications asthe rest of the sales force, sales went up24 percent the first year and 54 percentthe second among that group, just on thebasis. of their optimism.
