• Forthefirsttime,SeattleUniversityappearsonU.S. News and World Report’slistofthetop25universitiesfor service-learning.• Morethan300localchildrenandyouthparticipatein University-supportedsummerprograms.• Fourfacultyparticipateinathree-dayinstitutetobeginthesecondyearoftheCommunity-BasedResearchFacultyFellowsProgram.

FALL

• LedbytwoundergraduateShinnyo-enSummerFellows,450students,facultyandstaffremovenon-nativeplantsandassist withaneighborhoodcleanupthroughthe13thannualServeSeattleDay.• 85faculty,staff,students,communitypartnersandcolleaguesfromotherinstitutionsgatherforaCommunity-BasedResearchSymposiumfeaturingkeynotespeakerRandyStoecker.• JumpstartbeginsitsfifthyearatSeattleUniversitywith40studentscommitting12,000hoursofliteracyassistancetolocalpreschoolers.• Thenewyear-longRedhawkAcademicMentoringProgramlaunchesandprovides44WashingtonMiddleSchoolsixthgraderswithone-on-onementoringby29SUundergraduates.

ABOUT THE CENTERFoundedin2004,theCenterforServiceandCommunityEngagement(CSCE)servesasthemainentrypointforstudents,facultyandstaffwhowanttoserveandlearninthecommunity.TheCenteralsoactsasthefocalpointforcommunity-basedorganizationsandgovernmentinstitutionsseekingUniversitysupporttoaddress unmetcommunityneeds.TheCenterencouragesallformsofcommunityengagementincludingdirectservice,philanthropy,activism,politicalparticipation,socialentrepreneurship,community-basedresearchandadvocacy.CSCE’ssignaturefocusistheimplementationoftheSeattleUniversityYouthInitiative. TheCenter’smissionistoconnectthecampusandthewidercommunitythroughsustainedpartnershipsinordertodeepenstudentlearning,createacultureofserviceandpromoteamorejustandhumaneworld.
