MBA Course: Global Economy and Geopolitics in the 21st Century
Objective
In the increasingly globalised and complex world of the 21st century, it is crucial to
understand how the major issues on the international stage reverberate in
geopolitics, global governance and daily life. This course aims to comprehensively
address some of today’s most pressing international challenges and, in doing so,
enhance students’ capacity for strategic analysis related to these challenges.
Format
The course comprises eleven sessions. Dr. Solana teaches seven of the eleven
sessions. For three selected sessions, we invite prominent guest speakers. The
2016-2017 guest speakers were: Branko Milanovic, renowned specialist on
inequality at the City University of New York (CUNY) and former lead economist in
the World Bank's research department; Martin Indyk, Executive Vice President of
the Brookings Institution and former Special Assistant to President Clinton and US
Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations (2013-2014); and Shivshankar
Menon, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Institute of Chinese Studies in New
Delhi and Distinguished Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and former National
Security Advisor to the Indian Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary of India.

of the United States was held at Casa de América in collaboration with ESADEgeo,
the Alternatives Foundation and El País.
The new president started his term with numerous foreign policy challenges and

environment.
The session featured the participation of Javier Solana, President of ESADEgeo,
board member at the Alternatives Foundation and former EU High Representative,

over 80 foreign and defence ministers, and a particularly strong US Congressional
delegation.
The MSC 2017 agenda focused on the future of transatlantic relations and NATO

El País Writers’ Breakfast
28th February 2017, Madrid
On 28th February, El País and Banc Sabadell hosted a writers’ breakfast entitled “The
Opportunity of Brexit” that featured the participation of Jaime Guardiola, Executive
Director of Banc Sabadell; Carles Casajuana, former Ambassador of Spain in the
United Kingdom; Javier Solana, President of ESADEgeo; Andy Mackay, Director of
the British Council Spain; Antonio Vázquez, President of IAG; León Fernando del
Canto, lawyer for Lincoln’s Inn; Christopher Dottie, President of the British Chamber
of Commerce in Spain; José Manuel Calvo, Deputy Director of El País; and Javier
Ayuso, Assistant to the Director of El País.
This group of experts agreed on the importance of preventing the negotiations
between the European Union and the United Kingdom from taking on a punitive
character. If the negotiations were to take such a turn, Mr. Guardiola warned, “it
could threaten the growth of both parties”. According to Dr. Solana, “Europe,
starting with Chancellor Angela Merkel, is not in the mood for that confrontation
in these negotiations.” Mr. Casajuana observed, “It isn’t necessary: the British are
already punishing themselves with their decision to leave the EU. Everyone loses
in this situation.” Finally, Mr. Vázquez noted, “It is in Spain’s interest for things to
go well.”
The Populist Threat to European Democracy
6th March 2017, Madrid
Recent political events indicate that so-called populist movements are booming
both in Europe and in the United States. But are these movements really a threat
to democracy?
18
Adam Michnik, Editor-in-Chief of the influential Polish newspaper Gazeta
Wyborcza, spoke about this important issue at the Carlos de Amberes Foundation.
Mr. Michnik was introduced by Javier Solana, who discussed how the rising populist
movements in Europe and the United States have altered the parameters of
international relations and forced us to reflect on the assumptions of democracy in
Europe and the shared principles that give meaning to alliances. The session also
featured the participation of Xavier Mas de Xaxàs (La Vanguardia), Anna Bosch (TVE
Internacional), Rafael Panadero, Head of World News at Cadena SER, and other
journalists specialised in international relations.
The Future of European Security
14th March 2017, Brussels
Concerns about the future of
NATO and Europe’s security have
been rising since President Trump
took office in January 2017. With
constant threats from terrorism to
cyber-attacks, a resurgent Russia
and the prospect of Brexit, is it time
for Europe, 60 years after the
Treaty of Rome was signed, to
profoundly rethink its security strategy and construct a new European security
package? These topics were discussed at an event in Brussels organised by the
European Council of Foreign Relations (EFCR). Participants included Mark Leonard,
Director of ECFR; Javier Solana, former High Representative for Common Foreign
and Security Policy; Helle Thorning-Schmidt, CEO of Save the Children
International; Nathalie Tocci, Deputy Director of IAI; Almut Möller, Co-director of
the ECFR Berlin office and David Herszenhorn, Chief Brussels Correspondent for
Politico.

President of the European Commission, Álvaro Nadal,
Spanish Minister of Energy, and co-host Javier Solana,
President of ESADEgeo, this dialogue with the EU

Facing Europe” and “Brexit and Economic Challenges”, respectively). The same
event was replicated in Madrid on 27th March 2017.
Inequality and its Effects
22nd March 2017, Barcelona
Over the last few decades, inequality between countries and between the world’s
citizens has dropped for the first time since the Industrial Revolution. How can we
explain this? Has the recent financial crisis reversed previous trends? What do we
need to do to reduce inequality even further? And why is the fight against
inequality so important?
20
This debate was organised within the framework of ESADE’s Big Challenges social
debate hub, in collaboration with ESADEgeo. The debate featured guest speakers
Branko Milanovic, Visiting Presidential Professor at the Graduate Center of the City
University of New York (CUNY) and Senior Scholar at the Luxembourg Income
Study (LIS), and Javier Solana, President of ESADEgeo. The welcome address was
delivered by ESADE Director General Eugenia Bieto.
2017 Osservatorio AIR Annual Workshop: Regulatory Agencies in a
multilevel setting
31st March 2017, Rome
The growing internationalization of markets and the widening and deepening of
EU integration create opportunities as well as challenges for national regulatory
agencies. How do agencies deal with this complexity in order to perform their
regulatory duties, and, in some cases, how do they even acquire a leadership role
in policy-making? In that regard, which differences do exist across countries and
sectors?
To tackle these questions, this workshop aimed at taking stock of existing research
on this topic, which has mostly focused on a limited number of sectors and/or levels
so far. What is more, this workshop enabled scholars to engage in a dialogue with
the representatives of a number of selected agencies.
Angel Saz-Carranza, director of ESADEgeo, participated in the second session of
the workshop presenting the paper “The governance structure of regulatory
networks: A QCA exploration”, with discussant Martino Maggetti (University of
Lausanne).

International Law and New Wars
20th June 2017, London

(LSE) and hosted by the Centre for Women, Peace and Security, took place on
Tuesday, 20th June 2017 and featured the participation of Javier Solana, President
of ESADEgeo.
The event presented Christine Chinkin and Mary Kaldor's new book, International
Law and New Wars, which examines how international law fails to address the
contemporary experience of what are known as “new wars” – instances of armed
conflict and violence in places such as Syria, Ukraine, Libya, Mali, the Democratic
Republic of Congo and South Sudan. International law, largely constructed in the
19th and 20th centuries, relies to a great extent on an outmoded concept of war
drawn from European experience: inter-state clashes involving battles between
regular and identifiable armed forces.
