Center for Creative Photography 2011 AnnuAl RepoRt

The Center for Creative Photography is the largest institution in the world devoted to documenting the history of North American photography. It is a research institution with a robust program of exhibitions and public lectures. At the heart of the Center are the archives of more than 200 photographers, scholars, galleries, and organizations, comprising 4.5 million items, complemented by an unparalleled collection of over 90,000 fine prints.

My first year as Director of the Center for Creative Photography has been truly exhilarating. The staff is superb and dedicated and the collections extraordinary, but what has been most rewarding is the welcome I have received from members of the photography community, who care passionately about the Center, its history, and its potential. I am honored to be part of this great institution, and proud of what the staff has accomplished.

The year was noteworthy for the gift of $3.5 million from the estate of Chicago photographer Arthur J. Bell. We had a major boost in our international profile from an article in the Wall Street Journal about the Center; and through the launch of the Ansel Adams app for the iPad, comprising photographs, letters, and postcards in the Ansel Adams Archives. We improved the research experience by merging access to the archives and the fine print collections in a new space, the Laura Volkerding Study Center, and added more than 20,000 scanned images to our website. 20,000 visitors enjoyed our free exhibition program. We offered exhibition tours to more than 5,700 visitors, and customized print study sessions to nearly 700 visitors and over 2,800 students. The Center held nine public lectures by notable photographers and scholars such as Emmet Gowin, Chris McCaw, Lyle Rexer, Dr. John Schaefer, and Barbara Kasten.

At the end of the year we took a major step in strengthening our infrastructure by acquiring a new collection management system, TMS from Gallery Systems Inc., a company whose clients include many of the major art museums in North America and Europe. The system will be a vital tool for managing our collection records, organizing exhibitions, coordinating loans to other institutions, documenting conservation treatments, and tracking the movement of the collection objects within the building.

We are proud of the unique collections and archives found nowhere else in the world but the Center for Creative Photography. The Center, which is part of the University Libraries, supports the research and teaching missions of the University of Arizona. It also provides indispensable resources for national and international scholarship.

The Center is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and providing access to its one-of-a-kind research materials. We are engaged in extensive digitization projects to make the Center’s materials more widely available online. We are also expanding access to these items through print study sessions, tours, public exhibitions and programs, and our partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum. The great richness of the Center’s collections and archives makes them an important part of the nation’s intellectual and cultural heritage. Carla J. The Center for Creative Photography received a $3.5 million estate gift from the late Arthur J. Bell, a former photographer and instructor at Columbia College Chicago. The gift is the most significant donation to the Center since the building was completed in 1989, made in recognition of the international importance of the Center. It was Bell’s final nod to his passion for photography – a passion that developed as he was trained by American photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind, both of whom house their work at CCP.

Using Bell’s gift, the Center created a permanent full-time position, the Arthur J. Bell Senior Photograph Conservator.

The new conservator will plan and implement short- and long-term goals pertaining to the care of photographic materials in the Center’s collections and recruit staff for the CCP’s conservation lab. A national search is under way. The quality and size of the Center’s collections underscore the need for a full-time conservator. The gift is the culmination of a significant effort to create a conservation program that began in 2008 with the construction of a state-of-the-art photography conservation lab in the Center.

Gift from Sarah Lee, wife of Robert Sobieszek Robert Sobieszek’s Archive is an extraordinary collection of his writings, research files, lecture slides, correspondence with artists and writers, and memorabilia. Sobieszek began his career at the George Eastman House in 1968 and left to become the curator of photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 1990. In addition to being an adventuresome and inspiring curator, he was a prodigious scholar, producing ten books and contributing to over 90 other publications. His last major book and exhibition, Ghost in the Shell – Photography and the Human Soul, 1850-2000, was the result of over 30 years of research and is well documented in his papers.

Gift from Anne Adams Helms, for the Ansel Adams Archive

More than 150 individual pieces and books of sheet music that belonged to Ansel Adams were gifted by his daughter Anne Adams Helms. Turned corners and annotations demonstrate that all the music was clearly played and well loved by Adams. We have photographs and recordings of Adams playing the piano, and with the donation of his music to our collection, the documentation of this important aspect of his life is complete. The following additions to existing archives were received in FY11:

Archive Acquisitions

laura Volkerding Study Center

We are pleased to announce the opening of the new Laura Volkerding Study Center, a facility that allows integrated access to items from the fine print collection and the archives side by side in one secure location. This Study Center will have a transformative effect for students, faculty, and visiting researchers on their ability to learn from our unparalleled resources.

The Center received over 40 applications for the Ansel Adams Research Fellowship from scholars in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Four fellowships were awarded.

The Center has produced oral histories for 36 years. The official

“Voices of Photography” project (VOP), created by Professor Emeritus Harold Jones and Amy Rule in 2005, continues today under Jones’s direction. In 2010, VOP collaborated with the School of Visual Arts in NYC to conduct Skype interviews with people associated with the LIGHT Gallery in New York. They completed over nine interviews, wrote five annotations of interviews, and produced “The Voices of Photography Speak,” which was shown during the exhibition Creative Continuum: The History of the Center for Creative Photography at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Image Resources and Copyright Management

The Center for Creative Photography owns or manages the copyrights for 19 major photographers. The Image Resources and Copyright Management Department provides permission to license images to museums, educators, and publishers world-wide for presentation in print, film, web, and digital devices.

In 2011-2012, the Center’s licensing team facilitated the publication or digital presentation of 580 images by over 200 photographers. These images appeared in movies and in books on photography, history, social issues, architecture, and the arts. In addition, licensing services continue to expand to include new media uses including eBooks, mobile device apps, and web presentations.
