Dear Members and Friends of CJUC,

From the Chair of Council

Friends, I hope you had a very

enjoyable summer with family and

friends. This has been a very busy

summer for Christine and I as we

sold our house and moved to a

condo. Our next step in life has be-

gun.

Rev. Cindy had a well deserved

time-off from church during August.

Unfortunately her Mother passed

away and many of us attended the

very nice celebration of her life.

Rev. Cindy arranged to have J.T.

MacNeil lead the worship services

for us during the month of August.

He did a very good job and every-

one enjoyed him. We wish J.T. well

as he begins his studies at

Emmanual College.

nurse, but none of us could stand the sight of blood. However through my pastoral care in ministry and through the healing touch of Reiki I have a small hand in this profession.

Mom shared her love of food with us and taught me to cook and bake. I even mastered “Sue’s Never Fail Pie Crust”. However, I have to admit she missed the mark on her chocolate pudding as it was always lumpy. Yet she loved her girls so much that she would strain it for us.

She taught us all the importance of our Christian faith. She took us to church each week and gave us a strong foundation on which to live our lives. As little girls she would dress us up in pretty dresses with matching hat, gloves and shiny shoes. She tried to pass on her elegant flair, but I am afraid she was the only classy dresser among the girls in the family al-though her granddaughter Erin has taken on this role.

Her ultimate gift to us was her love of family. As introverts we were not the most talkative family, but we certainly knew how to feel deep love and care for one

another. We learned to live from the heart which resulted in a strong and special bond between us.

I am so thankful for the gift of my Mom and for having her for so many years in my life. I will miss her always, but cherish the memories that we

have shared.

Some of you have also experienced the loss of a loved one this past year and my prayers are with you in your time of grief. I wonder what you learned from them and how God has been revealed in their life?”

One of the gifts of being in this community of faith is that when you are hurting or in need, people are there to support and care for you. I feel blessed to have such won-

derful congregations to be in Ministry with and I am looking forward to beginning another year with you filled with lots of opportunity to share God’s love and care within and around our communities of faith.

God Bless You All!

With Heartfelt Thanks...

On behalf of my brother Kan and I, we wanted to express our heartfelt

thanks for the support and generosity of both congregations upon the

passing of our beloved mother Utako Inaba in February this year. She

fought bravely over eight years far beyond the expectations of her

medical team, and always, with a positive frame of mind . We admired

her strength and determination to make the most of her time with us

and loved her for it. To all of those who attended the wake and funeral

service, the generous donations to our family as well as to Ovarian

Cancer Canada charity, we are truly grateful. A special thank you to

Rev. Aihara and Rev. Willey who provided an intimate and most

beautiful service, Mrs Okagaito for providing the organ music, Mrs Nakao for her solo of mom's fa-

vourite hymn, and Mrs. Nakamura's heartfelt eulogy. Our mother now rests at Park Lawn Cemetery in

Etobicoke, close to where she spent most of her life, just as she wished. Thank you again to all, and

God bless. Kan & Kyoko Inaba

The Bible has many verses that speak to the concept of giving. Here are a few examples:

Giving is both a duty and a delight, something we ought to do and something we are pleased to do.

(Romans 15:27)

Giving is a privilege, something we appreciate being able to do as a result of God’s grace

(2 Corinthians 8:4)

Giving involves more than financial contributions – we first commit ourselves to the Lord and to

the Church at large (2 Corinthians 8:5)

The following verse is related to giving in a way but it is more a truth that we all are aware of but may not

consider very seriously until we are old.

We leave this world just as we entered it – with nothing. In spite of all our work there is

nothing we can take with us. (Ecclesiastes 5:15)

As the saying goes….”You can’t take it with you”. That is why God wants us to do to do what good we

can, whenever we can, wherever we can, to whomever we can.

Last spring we promoted Pre-Authorized Remittance or PAR whereby you could support your church

through an automatic withdrawal from your bank account. Thank you to the twelve people who signed up

for PAR at that time. I hope you are happy you made the decision to sign up for PAR. If you are

experiencing any problems, please let me know.

Every Sunday four or five people spend up to an hour opening offering envelopes, counting the money, re-

cording it, reconciling it and depositing it in the bank. If we had more people on PAR it would reduce this

weekly workload considerably and some of us counters could join in the social time after the service on Sundays. If you would like to sign up for PAR, or help with the counting, just speak to me and I will help to

make the arrangements.

Thank you for your continued financial

stewardship.

The United Church is collecting money to send to Syria to support the 6 million refugees and displaced people in Syria. This is being called one of the worst refugee crises ever, and almost 33% of Syria’s population is in critical need. If you would like to support this important cause, please write a cheque to either CJUC or O-YM and mark it “Emergency Response-Syria Relief”. We will then send all of the donations to the United Church. 100% of your gift will go to support refugees.

Thank you for your help.

Our planning retreat was held at Rev. Cindy's lovely home and property in the country on August 24th. It

was attended by 32 people from O-YM and CJUC. It was a very fruitful day as the various ministry teams and

committees got together to plan their church year. It was such a beautiful day of sunshine and fellowship.

Many thanks to Tina Ichiyen for organizing the delicious lunch and to Rev. Cindy for the yummy pumpkin

doughnuts.

Our Joint Exploration Team (ET) will again continue our explorations into the possibility of amalgamation

of O-YM and CJUC. I stress the word “exploration” as this is not even the beginning of a process for amalga-

mation. There are many important factors we need to study/explore to ensure that amalgamation is a good

fit for both congregations first.

We welcome you all back to our regular Sunday Worship Services, Sunday School and activities.

God bless!

A bit of humour.

A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question.

“Boys and girls, what do we know about God?”

A hand shot up in the air. “He is an artist!” said the little boy.

“Really? How do you know?” the teacher asked.

“You know – Our Father, who does art in heaven ----”

Our newest Don Valley Refugee Resettler (DVRR) refugee, Ahmed Harqaale (originally from Somalia) ar-

rived in June. He was sponsored from South Africa. This young man has settled in Islington where he can

live with other Somalian families. His apartment has been furnished and he is

looking forward to learning English and integrating with Toronto culture. He

was introduced to the DVRR members at a welcome dinner hosted by Jim

Acheson. Ahmed was deeply thankful for the generosity and attentiveness from

the members supporting him.

On June 8th, we held our annual golf tournament with 40 golfers participat-

ing. Thanks to the generosity of the people who donated the prizes, we were

able to raise $870.00 for outreach. (pictures on page 11)

Our Sunday School children will represent our Church this September on the

Terry Fox Run for cancer research. We all know someone who has been

affected by cancer. Please give generously and make your cheque out to The

Terry Fox Foundation and hand it to Mickey Kaneko, our Terry Fox

representative.

Soup Day to celebrate World Food Day will be held in late October. Could

you please make stock with your Thanksgiving turkey bones and freeze it for this

occasion. Income from the sale of the soup will be forwarded to the Lansing

Food Bank.

Non perishable food items and toiletries from holidays are welcome at any time for the Lansing Food

Bank. Please place these items in the collection box in the narthex.

Thank you for all your support to help make our church a caring, outreach oriented church.

The April 14th general meeting was co-ordinated by Kay Oiye & Grace Omoto. Twenty-five la-dies were in attendance, joined by many mem-bers of the Men’s Club to hear our speaker, a familiar figure among us, Janice Cermak. Janice was a member of Centennial United Church and joined us when CJUC amalga-mated. She is a member of the Ministry & Per-sonnel Committee, and a valued member of the choir. Janice taught English grammar at Hum-ber Community College. She has a daughter, Suzanna, married to Umesh Ariyadasa and re-cently became a grandmother to grandson, Chandra. When she retired in June 2005, she had a wonderful adventure, travelling to Europe, Ireland and Scotland for eight months. Janice spoke of her three-week trip to Sri Lanka in January 2013 to meet her son-in-law Umesh’s family. Sri Lanka has a population of 19 million people, and the economy is mainly tea and tour-ism. The Lipton Tea family started their busi-ness is Sri Lanka. Currency is in rupees. Co-lombo has a population of 750,000 with a huge English influence, where you can have high tea in the hotels. The weather was very warm, with temperatures around 30 degrees and very hu-mid. Janice, Suzanna and baby Chandra went sightseeing, renting a car with a driver, and Janice told us of their adventures, showing us many interesting photos.

A Review & Planning Meeting was held on Sunday, April 28 with eighteen ladies present.

The past year was discussed and it was agreed unanimously that the same format of co-ordinators of general meetings and executive positions for the Sept. 2013-June 2014 year would continue. The UCW Windup on Friday, May 31st, was or-ganized by Naomi Takasaki and Committee members, with fifty ladies in attendance. A Bingo game, created by Naomi, proved to be very popular, with lovely prizes that were do-nated. Line dancing by Jane Tsujimoto was en-joyed as well. The theme of “t-shirt” showed imagination of many of the participants as they paraded around in a circle with Kay Oiye, win-ning the best “t-shirt” – (with tea bags pinned to her shirt), with her usual creativity and originality.

Second place was Eiko Watanabe, dressed in her grandson’s hockey sweater. Thanks to the many ladies who contributed the appetizers, baked goods and most of all to the four men who were drivers, judges and served and cleaned up. A good time was enjoyed by all. During the summer months, juice and cookies were served after the service. Thanks to Louise Nagano for co-ordinating this service and to la-dies of CJUC and O-YM. Eiko Watanabe
