As mandated by the U.S. Constitu-tion, our nation gets just one chance each decade to count its population. The U.S. census counts every resi-dent in the United States. It is man-dated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution and takes place every 10 years. The data collect-ed by the cen-sus determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (a process called apportionment) and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities. The next cen-sus in 2020 will require counting an increasingly diverse and growing

population of around 330 mil-lion people in more than 140 million housing units. To get an accurate count, the Census Bureau must build an accurate address list of every housing unit, maximize self-response to the census, and efficiently fol-low up with those who do not respond. In the years leading up to 2020, we conducted research in four areas that focus on the major cost drivers of the cen-sus:

United States®

Census2020

• Using the Internet to increase self-response.

• Using existing government data sources to answer census ques-tions and reduce follow-up work-

load.• Automating opera-tions to increase pro-ductivity and reduce staff and offices.• Using existing maps and address to reflect

changes rather than walking ev-ery block in every neighborhood in the country.

The decennial census is the largest mobilization and operation con-ducted in the United States and re-quires years of research, planning, and development of methods and infrastructure to ensure an accurate and complete count. For more information on the Town of Prescott Valley’s plans for com-pleting the 2020 Census contact Community Development for the Town at 928-759-3050.

Happy 2020 everyone! It’s pretty crazy how quickly

the past decade has passed and now here we are with the begin-ning of a new one. I am sure that we all can look back and remember the highs and lows...the successes and the challenges and feel that now we have a new beginning.

This year is Census year. A time for all of us to be counted. Population numbers affect so many things but especially in the area of government representa-tion and funding. So let’s share the word and all get “Counted!”

It was beautiful and wonderful holiday season and we appreciate everyone that we worked who helped to provide the activities and events that make our com-munity so special.

Join us on January 28 for our annual Economic De-velopment Quarterly Breakfast. We are excited to share what is happening in Prescott Valley and the positive outlook we have going into 2020. The break-fast is open to everyone so call Gloria at 772-8857 and make your reservation now. This breakfast is one that sells out very quickly.

Our Business Academy starts on January 22 and there are still openings if you want to take advantage of a great business basics education program. Classes are presented by professionals in each subject field and are informative yet fun. To register visit pvchamber.org or call me at 772-8857.

Hope to see you at the Polar Bear Splash. It’s a great way to start the new year. It starts at 10 a.m. at Moun-tain Valley Pool and Splash.

Here’s to a prosperous new year and the beginning of a great new decade!

Holiday Festival of Lights, Parade and Create-a-Tree Display

Friday, December 6Prescott Valley Civic Center

Prescott Valley was all aglow for the annual Holiday Festival of Lights and Parade. Per-forming were Bradshaw Mountain Middle School Choir, Coyote Springs Choir and the Franklin Phonetic School Choir with the sounds of the season. Mayor Palguta gave his holiday message and CEO Marnie Uhl entertained the children with the “Night Be-fore Christmas”. Following the parade kids had a chance to visit with Santa and to view the Create-a-Trees in the library. It was a very fun and festive kick-off to the Holiday and Christmas season. Thank you to our sponsors APS, Yavapai Re-gional Medical Center and Asphalt Paving and Suppy and our partners the Town of PV Parks and Recreation, Public Works and Prescott Pro Sound.
