OP 13M
A distribution of the number of persons of school, militia, and voting ages, classified by sex, general nativity, and color, is given in tables 1 to 5, for each of the 5
states included in group 6. A similar distribution, covering the same states, is given for each city having a population of 25,000 or more, in tables 6 to 10; for each county, in table 11; and for each place having 2,500 inhabitants or more, in table 12.
Similarly, for the same states, the males of voting age are further classified by general nativity, color, citizenship, and literacy, by states, in tables 13 to 16; for cities of 25, 000 inhabitants or more, in tables 17 to 19; and by counties, in table 20.
In several of the tables contained in this bulletin, there are certain designations used· which require some explanation. The designation ''native white-native parents" comprehends all native white persons having either both parents native born, one parent native born and one parent unknown, or both parents unknown, while the designation "native white-foreign parents" comprehends all native white persons having either one or both parents foreign born. r_rhe designation ''illiterate" comprehends all persons who can neither read nor write or who can read but not write.
The figures contained in this bulletin are derived from the detailed tabulation of the population returns of the Twelfth Census, taken as of .June 1, 1900, and are subject to correction.

PERSONS OF SCHOOL .AGE ..
The designation '~persons of school age" includes, for census purposes, all persons from 5 to 20 years of age, inclusive, although there is but little uniformity in the age limits prescribed by the several states and territories.
The number of persons of school age, in each of the 5
states considered in this bulletin, is presented in detail by sex, general nativity, and color in tables 1 to 3. Table 21, which follows, shows for the same states the proportion of this class who are either native or foreign born.

Of the total number of males of voting age in Nebraska in 1900, only 2.5 per cent are illiterate, while in Montana 5. 8 per cent, in Missouri 7 per cent, in New Hampshire 7. 9 per cent, and in Nevada 12. 8 per cent, of this class are illiterate. Of the native born males of voting age in the states under consideration in 1900, the illiterates constitute in Nevada 14.2 per cent, in Missouri 7.1 per cent, in Montana 3. 9 per cent, in New Hampshire 2 per cent, and in Nebraska 1. 3 per cent, while of the foreign born males of voting age in t11ese same states in 1900, the illiterates constitute in New Hampshire 24 per cent, in Nevada 10.9
per cent, in Montana 8. 3 per cent, in Missouri 6. 9 per cent, and in Nebraska 5. 2 per cent.
Of the native white males of voting age in 1900 who are of native parentage, the largest proportion of illiterates in any of the states of this group is found in Missouri, or 6. 3 per cent. In the remaining states of the group the proportion of illiterates for this class of the males is small, ranging from seven-tenths of 1 per cent in Montana to 1.4 per cent in New Hampshire. rrhe proportion of illiterates among native white males of voting age who are of foreign parentage is also small in all of these states, the largest, 5. 2 per cent, being in New Hampshire.
Of the foreign white males of voting age in New Hampshire in 1900, nearly one-fourth, or 24 per cent, are illiterate. For the remaining states of the group the proportions are comparatively small, or 7 per cent in Nevada, 6. 8 per cent in Missouri, 6. 7 per cent in Montana, and 5~ 1 per cent in Nebraska.
Of the colored males of voting age in 1900, more than one-half of those in Nevada, or 58. 7 per cent, are illiterate, this being due in good part to the presence among males of this class of a large number of illiterate Indians and Chinese. In Montana 39. 7 per cent of all colored males of voting age are illiterate, which is also due largely to the
illiterate Indians, Chinese, and Japanese residing within the limits of the state. In Missouri 31. 8 per cent of all colored males of this class are reported as illiterate, but in this instance the proportion is due to the presence among males of this class of a large numbe~· of illiterate persons of negro descent. In New Hampshire 19. 8 per cent, and in Nebraska 16. 7 per cent, of all colored males of voting age in 1900 are illiterate.
)foreign born males of voting age are distributed according to citizenship and literacy in table 16, and from the figures therein presented is derived table 30, showing the proportion of foreign born males of voting age in 1900
who are naturalized or who have taken out first naturalization papers.
