FORESTVALE CEMETERY
In 1889, the year Montana became a state, thegrowing city of Helena realized its need for acemetery in addition to the three sponsored byreligious bodies. A group of investors purchased 160acres, which a local newspaper called "bleak andunattractive and too remote" from town - it wastwo and a half miles away from Helena, treeless andcovered only by prairie grass. But the HelenaCemetery - as Forestvale was called until 1901 -was landscaped by civil engineer Harry V. Wheelerin a park-like style, including a small artificial lakecentered with a tiny island. Since drained of water, the lake is visible today as a depression in theground. Here at Forestvale are buried many pioneerpublic figures of Montana - from Vigilante leaderand U.S. Marshal John X. Biedler to Methodistmissionary "Brother Van," William Van Orsdel, whopreached in mining camp saloons and founded some50 churches - as well as many prominent politicaland business figures who helped build both Helenaand Montana. The "China Row" section, locatedoutside the formal cemetery plat at thenorthwestern corner recalls Helena's once thriving, but segregated, Chinese community.
Narrative taken from the National Register of Historic Places by theUnited States Department of Interior plaque, in cooperation with the
Montana Historical Society.
The Receiving Vault is located just inside the cemeterygrounds. It functioned as storage for bodies in casketsduring the winter months until the ground thawed andallowed for burial. It was used for the first time onNovember 8, 1891. The vault was also used fortemporary storage until a burial location was decidedupon. It is not necessary to use this vault today.
HISTORY OF FORESTVALE
In May 1890, a transfer of land from Evan J. Harris tothe Helena Cemetery Association established the site, which later became the Forestvale Cemetery District.Today the cemetery consists of 148 acres; about 40acres are currently developed. There are over 14,000individuals buried here.
Helena civil engineer Harry Wheeler designedForestvale incorporating the notion of the cemetery as a"rural park" into his design. Mature trees, well-plannedlandscaping, tree-lined paths, beautiful monuments, mausoleums, columbariurns and arbor gardens gracethis beautiful cemetery in the heart of Montana. Futureplans include an "above ground" mausoleum. Plantingsof native trees shade the gravesites and line themeandering roads and walkways that wind through thegrounds while the overall landscaping provides anatmosphere of tranquility and solemn reflection.
You will find the graves of individuals and families, many of whom came here in the 1860s and helpeddevelop Montana Territory. They came from all parts ofthe world.
Although most settlers were of European ancestry, there is a large Chinese section, reflecting theirpresence and social status in Montana's history. Themonuments in the various sections of the cemeteryfurther exemplify the social stratification of earlyHelena.
Forestvale Cemetery covers a broad spectrum ofHelena's history - a place to walk through Montana'shistory. Please maintain its tranquility while you visit.
,.-
The window openings of the Brown Mausoleum wereoriginally set with stained glass but have since been
filled with stone. There are two other smallabove ground mausoleums in the cemetery at the
present time.

A TOUR THROUGH TIME
Visiting Forestvale Cemetery is like opening ahistory book, as this is the final resting place ofmany persons of exceptional significance. Thetombstones are set, the old with the new, andthe fancy with the plain, the homemade withthe military and Masonic; all combine to makethis one of the most distinguished cemeteries inMontana.
There is no place that covers a broaderspectrum of Helena's history than doesForestvale Cemetery. It is a place to walkthrough the past. Here you will find the gravesof individuals and families that came here inthe 1860s from all parts of the world and whohelped shape the territory into the State ofMontana.
There were over 400 exhumations from othercemeteries reinterred in Forestvale. Thesereinterments came from the abandonedCatholic Cemetery south of the State Capitol,City Cemetery behind Central School, CatholicCemetery on Oakes, Benton Avenue Cemeteryand Mountain Home Cemetery. They were alsoremoved from several ranches in the Helenaarea, other towns in Montana, and many wereremoved from Beaver Creek when Canyon FerryReservoir flooded the area.
A large pond with a small raised island in the centerwas located in the heart of the cemetery grounds. Thepond is now lined with sod and is used for burials. It isnow the Arbor Garden Section.
The Board of Trustees donated a large parcel of land inthe Glendale Section to the county for burials ofindigent persons and children of the MontanaChildren's Home, a local orphanage.

CHINA ROW
"Montana's once substantial Chinese populationdwindled into the 20th century. In the 1970s, urbanrenewal erased all vestiges of Helena's early Chineseneighborhoods. Only a few descendants of Chinesepioneers remain in Helena today. Along with the twohundred burials placed outside the maintainedgrounds in China Row between 1892 and 1955, werecolorful offerings, religious objects and altars. Thesetributes to the dead were long ago vandalized anddesecrated. During the 1940s, relatives removedperhaps a dozen graves and returned the bones toancestral soil in China. Evidence of these exhumationsis clearly evident. Most of the dead, however, lie todayin the untended plots outside the green and peacefullandscaped cemetery grounds. Five distinct rows and afew headstones are all that mark the pioneers who restin this wind-swept field among the prairie grass andprickly pear." Montana Historical Society
