Who were the Celts??

● Celts were a group of people that occupied lands from the British Isles to Gallatia

● They had many dealings with other cultures that bordered the lands occupied by these people

Celtic Religious Patterns ● Even tho the Celtic gods varied from

region to region and tribe to tribe, they had some religious patterns.

● Celtic Paganism refers to the religious beliefs and practices adhere to Iron Age people of Western Europe now known as the Celts.

Celtic Social System

● Women participated in both warfare and in kingship.

● Society was divided into three groups- A warrior aristocracy, intellectual class including druids, poets, and jurists, and then there was just everyone else that was left.

● The early Celts considered trees to be sacred.

● Celts practiced human sacrifice on a fairly large scale there is peripheral support for this in Irish sources.

● It is said to be that the celtics did not build temples, instead they worship the gods outside in grove of trees, but that was false there is traces of temples built by the celts

Celtic Economy

● The basic economy of the Celts was mixed farming, and, except in times of unrest, single farmsteads were usual. Owing to the wide variations in terrain and climate, cattle raising was more important than cereal cultivation in some regions.

● There is strong archeological evidence to suggest that the pre-Roman Celtic nations were tied into a network of overland trade routes that spanned Eurasia from Ireland to China. Celtic traders were also in contact with the Phoenicians, gold works made in Pre-Roman Ireland have been unearthed in archaeological digs in Palestine, and trade routes between the Celtic nations and Palestine date back to at least 1600 BC.
