CELLULAR RESPIRATION
What is cellular respiration? ð The process by which cells break down simple food molecules (glucose) to release energy.
Glucose
What is the chemical formula for cellular respiration?
REACTANTS PRODUCTS
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 à 6 CO2 + 6 H2O
Glucose Oxygen Carbon Water Dioxide

What are the two stages of cellular respiration?
ð 1st Stage – Occurs in the cytoplasm No oxygen is involved (anaerobic) Very little energy is released ð 2nd Stage – Occurs in mitochondria Oxygen is involved (aerobic) Lots of energy is released
What is the difference between photosynthesis and respiration?
ð Cellular respiration & photosynthesis can be thought of as opposite processes.
ð All organisms do cellular respiration! Only plants and some protists do photosynthesis.
What is fermentation?
ð Bacteria do not have mitochondria therefore can only do the 1st stage of cellular respiration.
ð The 1st stage of cellular respiration is called fermentation.
Also called anaerobic respiration. (without oxygen)
Types of Fermentation ! Alcohol Fermentation occurs in yeast
cells ! Lactic Acid Fermentation occurs in
muscle cells in the body
