CELLS
November 30, 2015
TODAY: • By the end of the lesson, you will be able to match 5 cell organelles (like the nucleus) to their functions.
• Overview of today• Why do cells matter to you?
-‐In school...
-‐In life...

Here's a little rap to get you thinking about cell organelles...
November 30, 2015
• Cells are made of....ORGANELLES!
• An organelle is any structure within a living cell
• Think of the cell as a town. What do towns have that make them function properly?
November 30, 2015
Nucleus
Town function: city hall
Organelle function: controls the cell, the brain of the cell
November 30, 2015
Nucleolus
Town function: Mayor
Organelle function: produces ribosomes that are used for assembling proteins
November 30, 2015
Town function: Post office
Organelle function: stores, packages, and releases chemicals
Golgi Bodies

Chromosomes
Town function: Laws
Organelle function: Carry all of the information to help a cell grow and reproduce. Made of DNA.
November 30, 2015
Town function: Energy Plant
Organelle function: takes in and breaks down nutrients, uses them for energy
Mitochondria
November 30, 2015
Cytoplasm
Town function: lawns and parks
Organelle function: gel-‐like substance that is found anywhere in a cell that an organelle is not

Endoplasmic Reticulum
Town function: transportation system
2 types: Smooth and Rough. The rough ER has ribosomes stuck to it (a ribosome is another organelle we will talk more about later)
Organelle Function: allow for the movement of molecules to and from the nucleus
November 30, 2015
Town function: warehouse
Organelle function: stores water, dissolved materials, and waste from the cell
Vacuole
November 30, 2015
Cell Membrane
Town function: armed forces
Organelle function: surrounds and holds parts of the cell together. Controls the movement of materials in and out of the cell.
November 30, 2015
Nuclear Membrane
Town function: bodyguard
Organelle function: control the movement of materials in and out of the nucleus
November 30, 2015
Centrioles
Town function: delivery room
Organelle function: Used for cell division when the cell divides itself into two cells.
November 30, 2015
*More in animal cells than plant cells
Town function: waste disposal / recycling
Organelle function: keeps extra waste from building up in the cell
Lysosomes

Town function: Solar energy plant
Organelle function: where photosynthesis occurs
Chloroplasts
November 30, 2015
Town function: lumber/brickyard
Organelle function: carry out manual labor. Bring together RNA and amino acids to form proteins
Ribosomes
November 30, 2015
Town function: city limits
Organelle function: protects the cell from exploding and keeps diluted solutions out of the cell
Cell Wall

ChloroplastsMolecules move to and from the nucleus
Draw a line from each organelle to its function(discrimination)
Place where photosynthesis takes place in the cell

Let's check your understanding!Touch a balloon to see the name of a cell organelle.
Draw a line from the organelle to its function.

the brain of the cell
the powerhouse of the cell

Plicker...
You will need: your plicker card
November 30, 2015
Independent Practice
You will need: a sheet like this, a stack of post-‐its
Directions: Put the cell organelle in the box next to its function
