CELL SOCIETY

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Cell Society’s Annual Clinical Conference was created to meet demand for evidence-based clinical information on regenerative stem cell therapies. This year’s meeting will bring together more than 35 international and national faculty. All are leading experts in fields including cardiology, neurology, sports medicine, tissue engineering, aging, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and regulatory issues. This will be a 2 day opportunity for them to share and discuss their most recent findings.

TARGET AUDIENCE:This conference is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients who may benefit from cell therapy treatments. This conference is also for physicians and healthcare workers interested in keeping abreast of quickly evolving research in what many believe is the future of medicine – regenerative stem cell therapies.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT:The utility and usefulness of this conference is based on the fact that regenerative stem cell therapies have the potential to transform the care of patients who suffer a multitude of medical conditions. Clinical research and trials around the world are revealing important clinical benefits, yet physicians and patients have little access to the growing collection of clinical evidence in this burgeoning field. This conference highlights many leading clinical trials and evolving cell therapy applications. This is a unique and important opportunity for physicians to learn of the latest developments in regenerative medicine.

More cardiovascular, neurovascular, orthopedic, regulatory topics, and multi-disciplinary clinical panel discussions were requested in the evaluation summary of the Cell Society 2012 Conference. As a result, several changes have been made to the 2013 conference, which has been designed to share information across medical disciplines and multiple therapeutic specialty areas.

There is clearly a need for practicing physicians to understand the advances in stem cell clinical research and applications, as well as the clinical science behind the cell therapies. A growing number of these therapies are available today and more are coming.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:

DESCRIBE the basic science and biology of stem cell therapies and their use for various medical applications.

EVALUATE the best practices and obstacles, currently available, for the application of cell therapies in reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery.

DETERMINE the best practices and obstacles, currently available, for cardiovascular applications of stem cell therapies.

ESTIMATE the best practices and obstacles, currently available, for orthopedic surgery and sports medicine applications of stem cell therapies.

CALCULATE the best practices and obstacles, currently available, for neurological applications of stem cell therapies.

ASSESS the best practices and obstacles, currently available, for using stem cell therapies in tissue engineering.

EXPLAIN the current regulatory environment regarding the use of cell therapies by practicing physicians.

ACCREDITATION:Physicians: USF Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing education for physicians.

USF Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 14.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
