Welcome back, little grasshoppers! We've got a little nifty tutorial herefor those of you who don't have atablet. It will involve some patienceand practice though but rest assuredthat the results would be quitesatisfying! I'll show you how you canstill output a clean looking cel-shadedpiece of art even without a tablet! It'stime to get cracking and let's showthem tablet users that mouse-userscan also kick butt!

What you need:1. Photoshop - any version will work(for this I used CS2)2. Your oh-so-awesome drawing!3. A scanner4. Your trusty little mouse

Terms you'd encounter:PS -Photoshop. Not PlayStationBG - Background. Not Big GorillaLayers - Your close friend when usingphotoshop. Don't be intimidated. Justthink of these as pieces of imaginarypaper stacked on top of each other.Filters - PS's default effects that youcan mess with. These would be those

motion blurs, clouds filters, lens flare, etc etc.Opaque/Opacity - The transparency of something. Opaque colors mean thatyou can't see through them.

I would assume that at this pointyou've got your drawing inked, scanned and cleaned up already. Icouldn't really do all those on a step-by-step basis because that wouldhave made this the longest tutorial onthis side of the Milky Way. There areother tutorials for preparing anartwork, however, I will start andshow you how to lift the line-art andput it on a separate layer.

Now to begin. Commence Cel-Shading!

Step 1 Cleaning up an image is veryimportant, especially if you're usingthe cel-shading method. Cel-shadingwon't do well with sketches as itwould make the whole picture ratherconfusing. We want a clean, crispimage to work with as much aspossible. Browse aroundmangarevolution.com to find tipstricks on how to clean an imageproperly. I sketched out and inked apicture of Terry Bogard because I

needed an excuse to draw him again.I've already cleaned this image up foryour convenience ;3

Step #2

Next up is lifting the actual line art! Asopposed to popular methods like retainingthe line art on one layer and addinganother layer on top and using theMULTIPLY Blending Option to color it,we'll do it in a slightly different manner. You’ll see some advantages with liftingthe actual line art later on. You can finda great tutorial on how to do it here:Digital Lineart Setup. I'll give you a quickoverview still. Most probably you'll have

your image in GREYSCALE at this time, especially if you’ve cleaned it up in PS.First, SELECT ALL by pressing CTRL + A.Broken lines should appear all over thecanvass.

Step #3

After you've SELECTED ALL, Hit CTRL + Cto COPY the whole image. Now go toyour CHANNELS TAB and click on thatlittle box on the bottom to create a NEWCHANNEL. By default it would be namedALPHA 1.

Whaa?!?! It turned black?? Don't worry, all you have to do is click on the ALPHA1 CHANNEL then hit CTRL + V to PASTE.Your line art would appear once again.

Step #4

Go back to your LAYERS TAB and FILL INthe whole image with WHITE. Create aNEW LAYER afterwards and select this.On top of your screen you should see aset of drop down options. Go to SELECTthen LOAD SELECTION.

Step #5

The LOAD SELECTION dialogue box would then appear. Goto the CHANNEL drop down box and select ALPHA 1.

Click OK.

You would then see broken lines forming the shape of youroriginal line art! Booyah! Almost done here. Now, FILL INthe lines with BLACK and viola, your line art hassuccessfully been lifted!

Step #6

Now that we've lifted the line art fromthe BG layer, we would want to makesure that it's not in GREYSCALE MODE,otherwise we won't be able to apply anycolor to it. On top of your screen, go toIMAGE then MODE then select RGBCOLOR. A dialogue box would appearasking you if you want to Flatten yourimage. Select DON'T FLATTEN.

Step #7

Now it's time to color! Since we'vealready lifted the line art, there is noneed to use the multiply option andplacing it on top of the image. Whatwe'll do is place another layerUNDERNEATH the line art layer, conveniently naming it "Color". Lol,how original XD. I also laid out 3different shades that I'll be using forthe skin tone, beginning with thelightest shade.

Step #8

What's good about this for mouseusers is that you don't need anyfancy-shmansy brushes. Just grab thedefault rounded brush! Make sure theOPACITY and FLOW options are seton 100% though... We don't want anytransparent looking colors here.

Start laying out the base color for theskin tone. I use the lightest one first. You don't have to worry about allthose excess colors since you can

erase them later and your line art issafe and sound in its own little lair...err...layer I mean.

Step #9

Page 10: Cell Shading Mouse Digital Tubenose

Most Cel-shaded images only have 2-3 shadesof color for each element of the picture. 4, if you count white. Just select a BASE COLORfirst then darken it a few notches, enough foryou to see a significant difference. Same goeswith the third color. Start planning on whereyou want the shadows and highlights toappear. Don't forget where your light sourceis! I placed mine on the upper left (like usual).

Step #10

Page 11: Cell Shading Mouse Digital Tubenose

Page 11le:///Users/cli/Desktop/moremrarchive/tutorials/Cell%20Shading%20…7C%20Digital%20Art%20Tutorial%20Written%20By:%20tubenose.webarchive

Basically, Cel-shading is a simplifiedversion of colors that are supposedlyblended together. Of course they aren'tblended per se. In Cel-shading, thecolors are very opaque, meaning theyaren't transparent, and are clearlyseparated with different shades. Onegood thing to bear in mind when cel-shading is that the images tend to giveoff a "boxy" and sharp look as opposedto the more roundish, well-blendedcolors of thats painted. The same

principle of light and shadow are stillapplied in cel-shading, you just don'thave to worry about making them blendtogether and polygonal shading isacceptable.

Sketchy art is not recommended for cel-shading because the technique reliesheavily on clean, precise and closedlines. It would be quite confusing tocel-shade a sketch because youwouldn't have a clue where a line endsor meets up with another.

The PATH TOOL is a very powerfulselection tool and would most likely beyour best friend once you get the hangof it. Let me see if I can explain clearlyon how you can use it:

First, select the PATH TOOL by pressing"P" then select a starter point with yourpath. If you hold down SHIFT and clickanywhere else, you'll notice that thepath automatically goes straight. This isa nice little feature PS has when you

want to create straight selections.

a.) After clicking on the starting point, click anywhere on the canvas. Once youhave your second point on, experimentby still holding on the button anddragging the mouse. You'll notice thatthe line from the start point to thesecond point curves. Using this can bevery helpful when you want to selectcurved areas instead of clicking abazillion points trying to get the shape of a circle. Once you drag the path whileholding the mouse button down, you'llnotice that as the line curves, anotherline appears by your cursor. Hold ALTand the arrow changes into a little black

triangle.

b.) While still holding ALT, drag the littleblack triangle to your last path point.Basically what you're doing is telling thepath tool to start where you left off again to continue creating the path.

c.) Once the black triangle is in place of your last path point, you can repeat step1 again and have the path curve anywayyou want.

The method takes a bit to practice withbut once you get used to it, it will makeyour work a lot FASTER and EASIER.Trust me on this one :D

Step #12

Page 13: Cell Shading Mouse Digital Tubenose

Alternatively, you can use PS's differentselection tools like the POLYGONALLASSO tool. Its like a simplified versionof the PATH TOOL but the down side onthis one is that you can't create curvesand when you accidentally double-clickwhile using it, your selection will bemessed up and you'd have to startfrom the very beginning D:<

You can also just use the roundedopaque brush to lay down the shadings

and such but be warned, it putsincredible strain on your hand (becausewe're using a mouse remember?).

Step #13

Page 14: Cell Shading Mouse Digital Tubenose

The method I've shown you is the sameon clothes and other elements of thepicture. Do you have to create a wholenew layer for every single element (hat, jacket, pants, etc...)? It's totally up toyou, and your computer's capacity. Theonly advantage of doing so is that youcan color correct certain parts easier. I'llleave the decision to you.

Since we've got the line art and colorlayers separate, you can add a dark BG

color underneath it all just to see anyBREAKS in the color. For example, if Ihad a white BG and colored the shirtWHITE, I wouldn't be able to tell wherethe shirt's color ends now would I?

DONT FORGET TO SAVE OFTEN!

Step #14

Page 15: Cell Shading Mouse Digital Tubenose

After you've placed details and such, youcan start cleaning out the excess colorsall around. It's looking a whole lot betternow especially with that clean white BGeh?

Step #15

Page 16: Cell Shading Mouse Digital Tubenose

Is it finished? Yeah, I know you want toshow off your new full cel-shaded pieceof art to your friends but not yet. Thefun hasn't stopped yet! Try utilizing PS'sspecial features and filters! Add a BG(since we're so awesome that we've goteverything on separate layers already) orsome filters and whatnot to enhance thewhole image. You can do a SAVE AS atthis point if you want so that you stillhave the original cel-shaded file just incase you mess up with adding effects.

Here, I grabbed an image of the FatalFury logo from the net and slapped it inthere. Added a star on the back or his jacket, blurred it and applied MOTIONBLUR on his hand to give it a sense of motion.
