Cell Phones: Time to lift the ban on mobiles in a school setting?

There is currently a lot of speculation as to whether or not cell phones and other mobile devices should be allowed in classrooms. Some studies show the devices to be helpful, while other studies show contradictory evidence.

Cell Phones: Time to lift the ban on mobiles in a school setting?

• A study at the University of Nottingham showed that mobile use could be productive in the classroom. But, this only occurred when there were strict guidelines placed on how the students could use the phones.

Cell Phones: Time to lift the ban on mobiles in a school setting?

• Studies have shown that there is a potential for students to succeed in using mobile devices in classrooms. However, things need to change for this to work. Many older professors and teachers have an unhealthy prejudice against technology. This is the major stumbling block between the classroom of today and the classroom of tomorrow.

New Class(room) War: Teacher vs. Technology

• Over 60% of college classrooms have wireless internet access. People tend to see this in two different ways. Older people, including many university professors, tend to see this capability as a way of distracting students. While younger people, including the students themselves, tend to think of this as an ability to produce information instantly in a classroom.

New Classroom War: Teacher vs. Technology

• This article shows several different ways that educators are being undermined by technology. One professor from Iowa State did a study that showed that a majority of students regularly used mobile devices for non-educational purposes in class. Many of them claimed that they did so because they were simply bored with the class.

New Classroom War: Teacher vs. Technology

• This article was interesting because it looked at this issue mostly from the educators’ point of view. It also gave an example of an interesting new form of technology that educators are using to combat the students. There is a computer program that allows professors to see what all of their students are looking at on their computers. With this program they are able to monitor the students and keep them away from sites that are inappropriate for the class.

Mobile Devices in Education

• This article was put out by Duke University, and it gives examples of how different mobile devices can be used in a college setting.

Mobile Devices in Education• Students at Duke are able to

use cell phones for a number of different things. The school offers an app that allows students to track all of the schools’ busses so that they are able to find them instantly. They also use text messaging to contact the library to find out about the status of books.

Mobile Devices in Education

• Contrary to the previous article, this article shows us some of the benefits that can be had by using technology. This is all being implemented now, so the jury is still out on whether it will be effective or not. But I really believe that it will be a good thing. Now if only there was an app for parking at IUPUI…

Conclusion

• I really think that mobile devices can be used effectively in the classroom and around campus. However, I think that there is going to be a battle between the older teachers and the younger ones over how soon this revolution takes place. I hope that I can be one of the younger teachers that can help to implement these changes in the classroom. This is an untapped resource that has great potential.
