New Orleans Center for Creative Arts is Louisiana’s premier arts training center for high school students.NOCCA’s Artist-Teachers provide high school students with intensive, professional instruction in

Creative Writing, Culinary Arts, Dance, Media Arts, Classical Instrumental Music, Jazz, Vocal Music, Drama, Musical Theatre, Theatre Design and Visual Arts. Tuition is free.

Created by the Orleans Parish School Board in 1973, NOCCA is now an agency of the State of Louisiana,

educating students from more than 100 public, private, parochial and home partner schools in half-day or after-school attendance options. NOCCA began its Academic Studio full-day program this year, providing students both academic and intensive arts training. Coursework at NOCCA carries honors-weighted elective credit to-

wards high school graduation.

Born august 4, 1989 in New Orleans, emilie was diagnosed with moderate hearing loss at a young age due to an untreatable disorder. her hearing deteriorated rapidly throughout her teens. it was a deficit that emilie filled with a passion for visual art.

she pursued her art education in high school at New Orleans Center for Creative arts, and, after evacuating from hurricane katrina in 2005, the dreyfoos school of the arts in west Palm Beach, fl. emilie was accepted into the prestigious The Cooper union school of Art in Manhattan, NY in 2007 for her undergraduate studies. upon completion of her junior year in May 2010, she received cochlear implant surgery in her left ear to partially address her hearing impairment. during

her studies at The Cooper union, emilie met and fell in love with alan lundgard, a humble partner that fate brought into emilie’s life.

On the morning of October 8, 2010, emilie was struck by an 18-wheeler truck while riding her bike in Brooklyn. in addition to stroke, traumatic brain injury, and resuscitated cardiac arrest, she suffered multiple fractures in her head, pelvis, and left femur. she emerged from the er in severely critical condition with a pessimistic assessment of her brain function. a “grim” prognosis was made of her chance for survival. But emilie’s mother, susan, and alan were always there for her.

emilie is now living and working on her blind rehabilitation at Blind, inc. in Minneapolis. her artwork and her support systems, alan and susan, have been essential in her day-to-day growth.

This averages over $115,000 per student.

thE NOCCA iNstitutE fiNANCiAl Aid prOGrAmThe NOCCa institute provides financial aid to NOCCa students through the following programs: term-time aid - awarded during the school year for department fees, supplies, required private lessons and other training needs; summer study aid - enabling students to study at pre-college arts-training programs across the country; and summer session aid - providing limited assistance for department

fees to attend NOCCa's summer session.
