Damaged crosses at Oak Flat.

This weekend, a representative of the Apache Stronghold arrived at Oak Flat and discovered that vandals had damaged the four crosses of an Apache holy ground. According to the witness, Two of the crosses were missing, ripped from the ground and two of the crosses have been left standing, but destroyed with what appears to be an axe. Evidence of large tires driving through the space covered the dirt surrounding and through the site of prayer. Ceremonial eagle feathers were left laying on the

Service, Tonto National Forest, “The Tonto National Forest was alerted to this incident by Emily Bregel, from the Arizona Daily Star Monday. Tonto National Forest law enforcement officers were sent out to investigate.” The incident remains under investigation.

The test confirmed what La Tasha Cartwright already knew. Her son Josiah was ready for kindergarten. Josiah had scored high on the kindergarten readiness test, called the Bracken School Readiness Assessment, which measures pre-academic readiness skills. The test is part of the Easter Seals Blake Foundation’s Parents as Teachers program, which First Things First funds in the Pinal region. It had been three years since Cartwright signed up Josiah for the program. At the time, she had decided to quit her job and concentrate on in-home child care for Josiah, then 2, and home schooling for her older daughter. Parents as Teachers provides voluntary, in-home visits from a parent coach who provided parenting information, support and encouragement to help young children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life from birth to age 5. Studies show that critical brain development reaches 90 percent by age 5, and critical skills like motivation, focus, self-discipline and self-esteem are developed during these early years. “I wanted my children to love learning and become self-educators,” Cartwright said. “With the help from the Parents as Teachers program, we learned to make a scheduled time to play and to make learning a priority. We also learned how to have fun with using the simplest of materials around the house. Sometimes we think we

need all this stuff to teach our kids and really we don’t.” The program also helped her better deal with what she described as Josiah’s “meltdowns.” Parent Educator Kim Alvey gave Cartwright recommendations on how to diffuse the meltdown and in some cases, how to prevent them. Knowing what parents can expect for a child at different ages is important, Cartwright said. For example, a 2-year-old child might not be able to handle sitting still for a long period of time. Or if it’s time to go to bed, give the child a 10 minute warning. Alvey and Cartwright also worked with Josiah on how to control his loud voice. “I brought a book with me to a visit called Voices Are Not for Yelling by Elizabeth Verdick,” Alvey said. “I left the book with mom so she could read it to Josiah. With much practice and reinforcement from mom, Josiah was able to use his quieter voice inside and know if he was supposed to use a loud or soft voice in a situation.”As Cartwright learned about how best to teach her son, Josiah grew physically, socially, and cognitively, Alvey said. “She would scaffold the activities, so when Josiah mastered one thing, mom would make the activity more challenging,” she said. “For example, after Josiah learned his letters, mom would teach him the letter sounds. Once the letter sounds were mastered, mom started teaching him words. Josiah was now able to read.”

The theme for this year’s Apache Leap Mining Festival was “Women in Mining. From Pickaxe to Boardroom.” The top two parade prize winners went to the Gorham family who was celebrating over 115 years of women in their family who work in the mining

industry and ASARCO who decorated an ATV as a pink hard hat. Third place went to Superior Dance Company for the folklorico dancers. This year’s Grand Marshal was Sydney Hay from AMIGOS. The Chihuahua races were won by

the top three ladies of the competition. Penny came in first, Mocha came in second and Ginger came in third place. The mining competition was once again a big draw as hundreds gathered to watch the skill and speed of local miners. Winning in the competitions

were: Sawing: 1st Chris Liddle 16.22 seconds and 2nd James Verbois, 16.63 (these two fellows are engineering students at the U of A school of Mining). Spiking: 1st Carlos Martinez 51.37, 2nd Chris Allison 54.12.

Isabell Quiroz, Carlitos Martinez and JJ Gonzales. This event continues to grow in popularity each year. While the theme of the festival celebrated Women, there was something for everyone to enjoy from the Blasting Zone Bar, vendors, plenty of food,

carnival, guided hikes and plenty of entertainment. Saturday night closed out with the crowd dancing to the music of Powerdrive. The horseshoe tournament that benefited the Richard Castaneda Memorial Scholarship hosted 27 teams.

The Central Arizona College Foundation has received $5,000 from TransCanada Corporation in support of the Promise for the Future program and the Foundation’s newest campaign, 25 Changes Lives. The Promise program is designed to encourage students living in Pinal County to stay in high school and graduate. During their 8th grade year, students complete the Promise Pledge. They must complete 20 hours of community service and graduate with a 2.75 grade point average or higher. A parent or guardian must also complete the Promise Pledge committing to support their child’s efforts. CAC fulfills their promise by offering a tuition-free

education for four consecutive semesters. “TransCanada Corporation was one of our earliest supporters of Promise for the Future and we are grateful for their ongoing commitment to education,” stated Maggie Dooley, Director of the CAC Foundation. “TransCanada’s partnership with the Central Arizona College Foundation continues to provide college opportunities and quality educational experiences for students.” TransCanada Corporation provided a $175,000 initial endowment to the CAC Foundation in 2011 to assist with the Promise for the Future initiative. The 34th annual Historic Home and Building Tour is set for April 7-8 in Globe. Early day homes that bring alive the excitement of territorial Globe will be featured along with two historic churches, Holy Angels Catholic Church which is celebrating its centennial, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.. Tickets for the tour are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. A

souvenir copper ticket is your ticket to a fascinating reminder of some of the architectural gems that will remind visitors of Globe’s history. Visitors will be shuttled from the train depot via courtesy between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Visitors are driven to the various stops where hostesses will explain the history and bring the properties to life. Craftsmen quality, brick construction and quaint

cottages are included on this year’s tour. The Pieces of Friendship Quilt Show will be ongoing the month of March and through the Home Tour weekend. It is showing currently at the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts and will be a stop on the tour, as will the old jail. For the second year, the historic Cemetery Tour is scheduled the evening of April 7 and again, visitors

Globe Historic Home and Building Tour set for April 7-8will be shuttled from the train depot to the cemetery, where they will walk through and hear from characters dressed in historic garb. Participants should wear comfortable and clothing and walking shoes for the evening tour. Cost of this tour is $15 a person and combination tickets for the home tour and the cemetery tour are $25 a person. Buy the combination ticket prior to April 4, either online or at the chamber office or White Porch and you’ll receive a special gift for early birds. The Historic Home and Building Tour is put on the by Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce. More than 100 volunteers are needed to put on the annual event, which marks its 34th anniversary this year.
