R. L. Paschal High School
HiSToRic SiTeS THE PROuD HiSTORy of R.L. Paschal High School began in the fall of 1885, when an impressive three-story Victorian structure opened its doors as the first public high school in Fort Worth.
The site, surrounded by dirt roads, is now the location of Daggett, Jennings, Hemphill and Jarvis Streets. This grand building, founded as Fort Worth High School, was known as one of the “finest schools in the southwest.”
in 1887, the first graduating class had 7 students: 6 females and one lonely male. This was a meager beginning for what would become one of the largest high schools in the state of Texas.
The year 1910 was a sad one for Fort Worth High School. Twenty-five years after the school was established, a fire completely destroyed the majestic building. Classes were moved to various elementary schools until the second Fort Worth High School was constructed on Jennings Avenue. This stately building would later become Ernest Parker Junior High. Today the old school has been refurbished as “Parker Commons,” a complex of historic lofts and apartments.
in 1918 Fort Worth High School was renamed Central when a new school was built on West Cannon Street. This 92 year old building, now a historic landmark in Fort Worth, is the current campus of Trimble Tech High School.
Robert Lee Paschal, who had been principal of Central beginning in 1906, unexpectedly retired in 1935 after 29 years of leadership.
in honor of this great educator, the name Central was changed to R.L. Paschal High School.
At this time, Paschal was the largest high school in Texas and the third largest in the South. The school regularly graduated more students and sent more to college than any other school in the Southwest.
in the fall of 1955, R.L. Paschal High School was relocated to the present campus on 3001 Forest Park Boulevard. The school was built around the old McLean Junior High School, and the art deco architecture of that era remains a historical part of the building.
it has been 125 years since the founding of what is now R.L. Paschal High School. There have been 4 locations and the name of the school has changed 3 times, but the mascot always remained The Panther.
The legend of The Panther and the history of Paschal High School are an integral part of Fort Worth’s early days and remain symbols of the proud tradition of educational excellence that has continued for a “century and a quarter.”
