Thank you to all the parents/caregivers, students and staff who made our Year 10 Hinetu evening such a success. A special thank you to our ran-gatahi for all your huge efforts! There were a wide variety of wonderful presentations, from amazing videos with a Mannequin challenge to comedy, to creative collage, exemplary power points, students singing live and dancing. We are very proud to have such talented students who demonstrate our school values and key competencies on a daily basis.

Learning Support has made a great start to the year....with lots of activities and participation -“trot on!”

On Sunday 18th February, myself and Alice Kibble were excited to get the opportunity to attend the Kopuawhara Trip to mark the 80th anniversary of the Kopuawhara flood disaster that killed 22 rail workers building the Gisborne-Wairoa line. In a flash flood, Waiau (Kopuawhara) Stream swept away the single men’s part of Number 4 Railway Construction Camp, Kaingapipi, on February 19, 1938.

Twenty men and one woman were drowned. An-other man drowned in a railway camp by Maraetaha Stream. The thing I found most interesting was that myself and Alice were 50 years younger than all the participants that were involved in this memorable day that took us at least 2 hours each way, so tiring but it was worth the walk. I think that Gisborne Girls’ High School was very privileged to get the opportu-nity to attend this fascinating event that is so impor-tant in our local history.Ihipera Cairns- Edmonds

Did you know that most anglicans in today’s world live in west Af-rica and are under the age of 25? Did you know that in the next 100 years council will have to buy the Holy Trinity Church as a historic landmark and tourist venue? On the 8th February the Year 13 His-tory class took a trip to our local Holy Trinity Church to learn about Anglicans across the world, in New Zealand and the church’s history itself. It was lead by Norman Maclean who was very knowledgeable of the church and religion. I particularly enjoyed learning about the stained glass window which integrated Voyagers and the heavens in one peice of stunning art but was disappointed to know that the numbers of attendees to church is decreasing rapidly in this day and age and there is an increase in home lead religious gather-ings. I think this learning experience expanded my knowledge of Gisborne’s History around religions and made me realise the many places in Gisborne with untold stories and history that need to be shared through the younger generations.Alice Kibble.

Community Wahine toa!CYCLONE GITA APPEALOn Friday 23rd February, the school ran a voluntary appeal to raise money to sup-port the people of Tonga. We raised $605.Gita was no longer a cyclone when it rav-aged places in NZ, so we can only imag-ine what a Category 4 Cyclone can do to a small Pacific Island group. Houses, schools, churches, historic buildings, crops and businesses were severely damaged. We are investigating donating directly to a school that has strong ties to our commu-nity. Thank you parents and students!

The present meets the future!Puna Whakaata Maniapoto-Love (Deputy Head Prefect) and Audine Grace-Kutia (BOT Chairperson) met our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during her visit to the Waka Hourua, Tairawhiti last Friday. Puna presented her with a crew t-shirt.

Congratulations to Lucy Anderson for her Scholarship in English. We wish her well on her future travels and career journey.
